Centralized secret management has strengthened security and simplified compliance across cloud-native environments
Configuring HashiCorp Vault since we are mainly using it in Kubernetes or OpenShift clusters took some time and effort to align with our deployment. The initial setup can be a little confusing and complex for someone who is newer. However, it is not impossible to achieve, but it will take some time to understand the product. The ACLs within HashiCorp Vault, such as policies and AppRole authentication, were not intuitive at first. However, we slowly became habituated to the product once we began using it. Once we moved past the learning curve of these challenges, HashiCorp Vault becomes a critical security layer of our workloads. The only minor challenge is the initial setup complexity, especially for teams new to HashiCorp Vault's authentication methods and storage backends. Other than that, it works flawlessly.

Centralized secrets have cut cutover time to hours and now need smarter AI-driven guidance
I would appreciate some AI intelligence features in IBM HashiCorp Security Lifecycle Management for real-time alerting regarding configuration issues or indentations when integrating with cloud-native applications. Having this intelligence integrated with monitoring tools like GCP Monitoring or Grafana would be beneficial. For improvements, I would suggest integrating IBM HashiCorp Security Lifecycle Management with popular LLM technologies, whether it's from AWS, GCP, or Azure, while introducing AI and ML for AIOps to enhance preemptive and proactive alerting and monitoring during the application lifecycle or continuous deployment stages. From a user experience perspective, having interactive dashboards that provide application-specific suggestions to improve quality and configurations would be helpful. If IBM HashiCorp Security Lifecycle Management could offer auto-suggestions on improving secrets and application configurations through its UI dashboards, it would greatly benefit users. Regarding the accuracy and reliability of outputs from IBM HashiCorp Security Lifecycle Management, it has not been consistent, indicating a need for better harnessing of inputs and outputs to optimize AI capabilities.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"HashiCorp Vault has positively impacted our organization by providing a central way to manage all the secrets."
"HashiCorp Vault has reduced the workload regarding rotating secrets and securely managing them."
"For me, the most valuable features include that it's easy to manage and maintain the password API for retrieving passwords and other things."
"Overall, HashiCorp Vault is a mature product offering enterprise-level security solutions."
"The benefits from HashiCorp Vault include significant advantages in security lifecycle management itself."
"We use the solution for secret management."
"The feature I find most beneficial in HashiCorp Vault is the secret engine. It integrates smoothly with many applications, making it easy to set up and implement quickly. This allows you to test it easily and see good results rapidly. When you integrate an internal API or application, it quickly manages that application's secrets."
"Using HashiCorp Vault has led to measurable changes, particularly in secret management and cost optimizations."
"IBM HashiCorp Security Lifecycle Management has been useful in my main use case."
"My main use case for IBM HashiCorp Security Lifecycle Management is service discovery."
"Externalizing all these application configurations using IBM HashiCorp Security Lifecycle Management services greatly aided us, allowing us to manage centralized configuration, thus reducing the environment provisioning time from a couple of days to just a few hours."
"CI/CD integration is the most valuable feature for my team because it helps me manage sensitive credentials securely throughout the deployment process."
"After integration, we onboard all those secrets that need to be managed through CyberArk, and after onboarding, we can configure the frequency for rotation of those secrets."
"IBM HashiCorp Security Lifecycle Management has positively impacted our organization by reducing the amount of sensitive credentials being stored directly in the application code and configuration files."

Cons

"While not a missing feature, I feel that the enterprise license is expensive, especially for some of the smaller use cases."
"HashiCorp Vault can be improved from the security perspective, as it focuses on security lifecycle management. It requires other solutions for monitoring as users need to rely on tools that constantly monitor the system, especially database activity."
"In terms of features, the only thing that I found a little bit hinky was that there was no revocation or deletion on the model we were using. Once in a financial year, a client interacts, and you pay for that client for the year. So, there are just little things like that in the pricing. There should be more clarity around the end of the key. I know there is no system like this. They all are the same. I tested Microsoft, Google, and some others, and none of them really want you to delete a key, which makes sense. You delete a key, and you lose everything that it has wrapped or encrypted, but it's actually just a language. Deletion isn't really deletion. It's really revocation, but overall, HashiCorp Vault ticked all the boxes for us, and I couldn't fault it."
"It would be helpful to have more advanced features."
"The solution could be much easier to implement. We are trying to implement it now."
"I think HashiCorp Vault is a good product, but I have had hard times trying to find secrets that different teams own."
"Setting up HashiCorp Vault can present operational challenges because deploying it involves complex initial setup, especially for a highly available cluster with integrated storage, auto-unseal, disaster recovery, and multi-authentication methods."
"One of the challenges we had was that we used a really old version, so part of what we plan for this year is to migrate it to at least a supported version."
"One area for improvement for IBM HashiCorp Security Lifecycle Management would be a more intuitive dashboard that provides a clear overview of secret usage, access activity, rotation status, and upcoming expirations across all environments."
"Token-based is risky because if somebody is able to grab that token, the token can be misused, which is a point of risk."
"IBM HashiCorp Security Lifecycle Management can be improved in that initial setup and policy configuration can take some time, especially for teams that are new to Vault and its concepts."
"The reason for my eight rating is that there are areas IBM HashiCorp Security Lifecycle Management can improve, particularly regarding integration capabilities and customer support."
"Regarding the accuracy and reliability of outputs from IBM HashiCorp Security Lifecycle Management, it has not been consistent, indicating a need for better harnessing of inputs and outputs to optimize AI capabilities."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The product is expensive."
"The AWS version is much cheaper than HashiCorp Vault."
"It could do everything we wanted it to do and it is brilliant, but it is super pricey. To be fair to HashiCorp, we drove the price up with our requirements around resiliency. Because of the nature of our company, we don't really operate in the cloud."
"In my case, the open-source version works well. It's advisable for small to medium-scale organizations, but for large-scale organizations, you should go with the enterprise version."
"The solution's cost is reasonable."
"I am using the open-source version of Vault and I would have to buy a license if I want to get support."
