Collaborate effectively with partners and benefit from robust data management capabilities
The functions of HPE StoreOnce that I find most valuable are its deduplication and replication options. These features save data and reduce the size of data significantly. If the actual size for backup data is 100 terabytes, using StoreOnce, it will be around less than 10% of the original size due to the 1 to 10 deduplication ratio. So, compression and replication are critical features I appreciate. Additionally, adaptive backup and restore capabilities of HPE StoreOnce are indeed very helpful functions. As I know from my technical team, the process is very easy for end users because the GUI and user experience with StoreOnce are straightforward. They can restore their backups at any time. An important feature of StoreOnce is that they can reserve an amount of storage capacity as protected capacity for a limited time, safeguarding their data against intrusion and other interactions. Based on feedback from customers, StoreOnce is regarded as a highly useful solution for backup. I am satisfied with the security aspects of HPE StoreOnce, but it's crucial for any company to maintain a multi-layer security approach. Starting with a firewall is essential for maintaining their environment. Additionally, security features on StoreOnce are useful. I believe that no company should rely solely on one layer of security; they should adopt a multi-layer security strategy that begins at the network level and extends to their internal solutions.

Backup storage has shrunk dramatically with deduplication but still needs stronger security options
The air gap feature is something I'd really like to see in QoreStor. There's no native air gap capability right now, and for security-conscious environments, that's a gap. The configuration export is also limited in QoreStor. If you want to document your setup or migrate configuration to a new instance, it requires more manual work than it should.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Backups are much more optimized, and we can take more backups and more often because of data deduplication."
"The most valuable feature of the solution is its UI. The product's UI makes it easy for users to configure the tool."
"StoreOnce is a backup solution with Data Protector in DDD and streaming through offsite storage, and it works just fine."
"The initial setup is one of the most user-friendly B2B user solutions. It's good, it's easy. Deployment usually takes less than one day. You only need one person for deployment and maintenance."
"For me the maintenance has been cheaper, the implementation was easy, it's a small product that doesn’t take up much space in my data center, and it’s been reliable and out-performed what I had used previously."
"The solution's most valuable feature is its catalyst mode, along with better performance, backup, and recovery."
"Backups are kind of one of those things where you don't want to worry about it, you don't want to be up at night fiddling with it, and I've probably gone from spending anywhere from maybe four to six hours a week tending backups to about 30 minutes a week."
"The product is stable; there are no bugs or glitches, it doesn't crash or freeze, it's reliable, and the performance is good."
"If storage costs are a problem, whether on-premises or cloud, QoreStor is worth a serious look."
"Quest QoreStor is very stable compared to our previous solution."
"This software solution can be installed on many different types of hardware, which makes it very flexible. We can run it on virtual machines or virtual servers, providing convenience for solutions of varying sizes, from small to large."
"QoreStor has helped to reduce our backup storage requirements on-premise by at least 90%."
"Data deduplication and replication would be the top two features. The encryption and cloud tiering are also attractive for the future."
"Since we started to resell QoreStor, we have been using it internally; it's better than other backup solutions we have used or evaluated."
"We need revisions and safe backup so that it could be held up in court, but deduplication and compression are the main features why we have Quest QoreStor. That's where it really shines. I use ZFS and XFS at home, and Quest QoreStor is even better."
"Quest QoreStor definitely saved us money."

Cons

"The web-GUI is not intuitive enough for basic users and offers fairly limited functionality compared to a backup solution such as Veeam or Backup-Exec."
"While the solution does everything expected, it would be beneficial if AI could be integrated for optimization and monitoring."
"The initial setup is difficult for the normal user."
"This product would be improved with the inclusion of more features to security or WORM."
"The appliance doesn't have the global deduplication, it has StoreOnce deduplication. It does not deduplicate across the appliance, it will deduplicate in one particular store. With the global deduplication, I could store more data."
"The solution's pricing could be improved."
"In terms of areas for improvement, I believe HPE StoreOnce could learn from competitors like Dell's Data Domain and ExtraHop in refining its architecture."
"The solution must provide backup options for smaller capacities."
"The installation could use improvement. The initial installation was a little touchy and it's not really user-installable. You have to have a connection to support to install."
"They could improve on support a little bit. We have not had to engage their support much, but when we do have issues, it can take longer to get things resolved."
"The setup of the software is definitely not the easiest thing. I worked a lot with Quest engineers, especially in the early days when we were first testing it and trying it out. I actually had some of the developers working with us at one point because they were going through these point releases, and I was having trouble getting it to work in this S3-compatible situation. We got it all working eventually, but setup is definitely not the easiest thing in the world."
"The importance of support is significant to me. I was working for a service provider, and all of our customers had a Quest or warning. Sometimes the support really underperforms."
"In terms of improvement, we would like to have an Air Gap feature to prevent a virus from attaching to something. So that when we don't do a backup, we want the QoreStor to stay offline. It would be a nice feature to have."
"The air gap feature is something I'd really like to see in QoreStor."
"Support is one point of improvement for Quest QoreStor. Support is sometimes not adequate."
"They need to increase their maximum capacity. Other than that, they're doing a pretty good job."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Price-wise, it comes with a high price tag when compared to other products."
"I would rate it around two or three because, compared to others, it tends to be higher priced."
"The cost of HPE StoreOnce is very expensive."
"The price of the product is reasonable."
"There are costs for additional storage and space."
"The solution's cost is above average."
"With the same capacity of Data Domain and ExaGrid, which is 80 terabytes, HPE is the cheapest one."
"We have got a perpetual license, and we have access to all the features. If you are using cloud banks, you can store the internal data in HPE Cloud if needed. You can offload the data to the HPE Cloud. It is a licensed product. We have got around 10 TB of cloud bank storage with a one-time payment. We specifically took 10 TB for very critical offsite backups. We can also increase it in blocks if needed."
"The pricing is good. It is competitive for a managed services provider. I like the ability to pay by the terabyte, allowing for an incremental cost that we and our customers can afford, so the solution grows with the customer."
"Its pricing model is very attractive. You have one price, and you get everything from QoreStor."
"Quest QoreStor's pricing is affordable. We evaluated Veeam, a well-known company for backup solutions, but found their pricing to be quite high. Veeam's price was almost double. For us, Quest QoreStor is very affordable."
"The cost is per terabyte, and overall, the cost was reasonable when compared to some competitors."
