PureSystems, something old, something new, something from big blue
PART I For a certain generation of IBM faithful or followers the recently announced PureFlex and PureApplication systems might give a sense of DejaVu perhaps even causing some to wonder if they just woke up from a long Rip Van Winkle type nap. Yet for another generation who may not yet be future…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The strengths of the system is how the Flex scales from a very powerful, next generation BladeCenter all the way up to an IaaS platform."
"You will find the high availability and License Team with Oracle very valuable."
"It is scalable as the box can be increased by one compute node, if required."
"It's the most cost-effective solution for your mixed Oracle and non-Oracle workloads."
"It has helped us to reduce Oracle licensing costs for database and applications."
"Oracle Private Cloud Appliance is a complete solution that includes built-in hypervisor management and Appliance Manager, and integrates with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure."
"Supports connection to most of network topology, such as VLAN and network segmentation."
"The most valuable features include distinct storage within the Oracle PCA."
"This is really a good consolidation play, so typically customers would have 10 or 15 servers out there, probably older, and what PCA does is give them a platform for consolidation."

Cons

"The FSM does not quite deliver in the areas it plays too. A fairly sluggish interface that is more complex and less streamlined than it perhaps could be, holds it back and deployment of certain functionality from the switches requires more user intervention than feels necessary."
"The initial setup was very complex."
"Patching processing takes a long time. Only one compute node is patched at a time."
"In comparison to competitors like VMware, there's a perceived need for Oracle to enhance OVM, making it more flexible and user-friendly."
"Customer Service: Since the PCA is relative new, finding experienced resources is bit hard; need a lot of improvements in terms of documentation and technical details."
"OVM Manager Interface is using HTML5. It should be reconverted to be a Java interface."
"The deployment process of Oracle Private Cloud Appliance is complicated and requires significant knowledge for initial configuration."
"I think a tighter integration with external storage, the simplicity of having, let's say for example, EMC storage or Hitachi storage connected to PCA would have been a nice little added."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"It is relatively cost-effective."
"No licenses for the shipped software or firmware."
