Senior Technical Specialist appreciates intelligent workload management, strong support, and scalability
The best features of IBM Spectrum Computing are common across many of their storage products. The software is solid, meaning that the code is stable. They take business seriously, which is what IBM stands for - International Business Machines. They always maintain a business-oriented approach in their software development. It's not simply clicking through interfaces; in IBM software, they consider their actions, process flows, and workflows around business processes. It requires understanding IBM and their methodology, as the software operates accordingly. I have utilized IBM Spectrum Computing's intelligent workload management feature. We use Insights, which is connected to the cloud. This provides AI capabilities for analyzing the configuration, offering smart recommendations on new code, warning about bugs in current code, and suggesting configuration improvements through its advisor tool. The predictive analytics feature in IBM Spectrum Computing enables optimal software performance through Insights. However, being a storage administrator requires foundational knowledge and understanding beyond these tools. For troubleshooting, it's efficient in spotting bottlenecks, but understanding the terms and metrics is essential as it provides answers that need interpretation.

Have faced limitations due to high costs but have maintained reliability over time
The primary issue is the pricing, which is very expensive for my company's budget. We cannot afford to pay such a large fee. We are not Microsoft or BMW; we are a small company. As a small company, I have no power to negotiate directly with VMware. Perhaps larger companies have more opportunity to contract directly with VMware, but I do not have that leverage. The only path I can follow is to change solutions. Net.spA is a company working in the field of waste management. We are not a technological company, so we do not have a large margin to justify purchasing and maintaining the VMware infrastructure at current costs.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable feature is the backup capability."
"Spectrum Computing's best features are its speed, robustness, and data processing and analysis."
"IBM's ability to cluster compute resources is impressive, with built-in support for scenarios like VR and active-active configurations,"
"I have utilized IBM Spectrum Computing's intelligent workload management feature through Insights, which is connected to the cloud."
"The best features of IBM Spectrum Computing are common across many of their storage products."
"Spectrum Computing is one of the best tools in the data management and services area, as it can process huge amounts of data with standardized data management and provides a great data governance capability."
"This solution worked as expected and it is reliable."
"Easy to operate and use."
"What's valuable to us is that we can create virtual routers and NICs."
"Best tool for capacity planning and analyzing the existing infrastructure in VMware."
"On a scale of one to ten, I would rate its scalability as an eight out of ten."
"My advice would be to purchase the product because it definitely helps troubleshoot issues in probably one-tenth of the time that it would take without it."
"It has improved our organization with respect to allowing us to size our environments correctly, giving us metrics about what our stuff is actually using, how we can scope for future projects, and where we can save some resources."
"Just having a central measurement point was light years ahead of trying to go into each one, or setting up different types of software that have monitoring."
"It's one of the best products that does the job."
"The reports: Print any kind of reports or generate them, and send them to somebody if they say my VM is going very slow."

Cons

"The deduplication software isn't quite up to speed with the market. While IBM has excellent compression technology, specifically on their FlashCore modules, they lag behind competitors such as NetApp in deduplication capabilities."
"The deduplication software isn't quite up to speed with the market."
"This solution is no longer managing tapes correctly."
"IBM's sales and support structure can be challenging."
"We are not fully satisfied with this product at the moment because we are having issues with reliability."
"We have not been able to use deduplication."
"Spectrum Computing is lagging behind other products, most likely because it hasn't been shifted to the cloud."
"SMB storage and HPC is not compatible and it should be supported by IBM Spectrum Computing."
"VMware could improve the way VROps forwards critical alerts to Microsoft Teams."
"Its ease of use is a little bit lacking, because of that complexity."
"Version 6 was terrible but 7 is a lot better."
"Lately, the chargeback site has improved, but it could be simpler."
"The biggest room for improvement would be the customizability of the alerting function. The emails that come through are somewhat difficult to tailor along with the information contained within them and how they are laid out."
"We would like better integration with the cloud because we use a multi-vendor cloud. We use AWS, which is fine, but we also use Azure and Google. We would like better plugins to those other two providers."
"It was not intuitive and user-friendly in the versions leading up to 6.5."
"I've had some stability issues with past releases that stopped collecting information."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"This solution is expensive."
"Spectrum Computing is one of the most expensive products on the market."
"The solution is costly."
"Bundle it in with your license rather than buying it as a separate product. It saves a lot of money that way."
"vROps is a bit expensive and that's a reason that small clients say, 'No, I don't think we need this.' From a pricing perspective, it is quite steep. But 'expensive' is relative, depending on what you need. Others might say, 'It is expensive, but I think we can use it to better our environment.'"
"I would give the solution a three out of five, with one being cheap and five being expensive. There are some elements of the pricing that are good, and some areas where I feel like I'm being charged for something the product can't provide yet."
"This is an enterprise-level product and everything is included in the VMware Suite license."
"The solution has helped to reduce the time to troubleshoot issues."
"The licensing model is annual. Compared to the price of other products, VMware vRealize Operations (vROps) is a bit on the high side. If it could be cheaper, it would be good."
"Every VMware product is a licensing challenge. It's always costly. It's based on processors. From a technical side, the product is very good. The challenging part is always the licensing. They should have some kind of alternate pricing models."
