Senior Technical Specialist appreciates intelligent workload management, strong support, and scalability
The best features of IBM Spectrum Computing are common across many of their storage products. The software is solid, meaning that the code is stable. They take business seriously, which is what IBM stands for - International Business Machines. They always maintain a business-oriented approach in their software development. It's not simply clicking through interfaces; in IBM software, they consider their actions, process flows, and workflows around business processes. It requires understanding IBM and their methodology, as the software operates accordingly. I have utilized IBM Spectrum Computing's intelligent workload management feature. We use Insights, which is connected to the cloud. This provides AI capabilities for analyzing the configuration, offering smart recommendations on new code, warning about bugs in current code, and suggesting configuration improvements through its advisor tool. The predictive analytics feature in IBM Spectrum Computing enables optimal software performance through Insights. However, being a storage administrator requires foundational knowledge and understanding beyond these tools. For troubleshooting, it's efficient in spotting bottlenecks, but understanding the terms and metrics is essential as it provides answers that need interpretation.

Have faced limitations due to high costs but have maintained reliability over time
The primary issue is the pricing, which is very expensive for my company's budget. We cannot afford to pay such a large fee. We are not Microsoft or BMW; we are a small company. As a small company, I have no power to negotiate directly with VMware. Perhaps larger companies have more opportunity to contract directly with VMware, but I do not have that leverage. The only path I can follow is to change solutions. Net.spA is a company working in the field of waste management. We are not a technological company, so we do not have a large margin to justify purchasing and maintaining the VMware infrastructure at current costs.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"This solution worked as expected and it is reliable."
"The most valuable feature is the backup capability."
"The comparison was challenging, but the IBM Spectrum Scale offered a balanced solution. Our engineers rated itsanalytics capabilities equally high as Pure Storage. For workload management, Spectrum Computing provided effective solutions that met our needs. Workload management is part of a complete solution that uses different tools. There were the cloud and HPC parts; within HPC, there were parts like liquid cooling, simple computing, storage, and orchestration. The orchestration team handled the workload management."
"The most valuable aspect of the product is the policy driving resource management, to optimize the computing across data centers."
"IBM's ability to cluster compute resources is impressive, with built-in support for scenarios like VR and active-active configurations,"
"This solution is working for both VTL and tape."
"The best features of IBM Spectrum Computing are common across many of their storage products."
"Spectrum Computing's best features are its speed, robustness, and data processing and analysis."
"Being able to consolidate everything on similar hardware is really helpful, as opposed to trying to manage a bunch of hosts."
"It gives me more insight on issues like: Do we need to add more hardware to the clusters; when disks are low, to add more disk space. It's a preventive type of maintenance."
"vRealize Operations Manager gives us more detail and is best of breed when it comes to monitoring."
"It does exactly what it's supposed to do, giving all your coworkers, management, and users a dashboard that shows the current state of the entire vSphere ecosystem, which is very nice to have."
"The ability to monitor our trending and growth in our environment gives us an idea of when we're running out of capacity, how quick our growth is occurring, and where it's occurring."
"The faults and alerts features are the most valuable features of the product."
"This solution has improved my organization because we work with several other companies and we've seen them automate more of their workloads, get better visibility of their workloads, and get further insights into how their databases are operating."
"VMware vROps' most valuable feature is that it integrates well with our VMware infrastructure, which is helpful for us because we can closely monitor our VMs and their performance."

Cons

"This solution is no longer managing tapes correctly."
"IBM's sales and support structure can be challenging."
"The deduplication software isn't quite up to speed with the market. While IBM has excellent compression technology, specifically on their FlashCore modules, they lag behind competitors such as NetApp in deduplication capabilities."
"We have not been able to use deduplication."
"Lack of sufficient documentation, particularly in Spanish."
"The deduplication software isn't quite up to speed with the market."
"We are not fully satisfied with this product at the moment because we are having issues with reliability."
"Spectrum Computing is lagging behind other products, most likely because it hasn't been shifted to the cloud."
"Certificate Management should be simplified for non-technical staff members."
"It's not always the easiest product to work around in, and build meaningful dashboards."
"I'd like to be able to access some demo sessions to enable a deeper understanding of the product to help our clients because it's quite a complex solution."
"We have faced one problem when integrating with vRealize Log Insight, where the logs are not collected because the component drivers are not updated."
"We've had stability issues with the underlying PostgreSQL database; it's very chatty, it fills the logs up, it fills the drives up."
"We have used technical support sometimes. It could be a little bit challenging."
"It's mostly user-friendly and intuitive. They're improving their dashboards which makes it a lot easier. Sometimes, drilling down and trying to find the exact thing you're looking for can prove challenging at first, but it's getting better."
"Setting up the alerts, definitions and actions were kind of tricky because there's a lot of false positives. A lot of things it alerts you on are not really problems, so you have to go in and tweak the policies around to see the actual real issues."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Spectrum Computing is one of the most expensive products on the market."
"This solution is expensive."
"Our budgets are always tight. We would like to have more features at lower licensing levels for easier access to them."
"Don't overallocate! This means that you don't have to buy many hosts. You can save money that way."
"Most small users don't adopt VMware Aria Operations until it's necessary. Small businesses are looking for it, too. We need more monitoring and insights, so we're analyzing solutions to help us out here. I rate the solution’s pricing a five out of ten."
"I would give the solution a three out of five, with one being cheap and five being expensive. There are some elements of the pricing that are good, and some areas where I feel like I'm being charged for something the product can't provide yet."
"If the VMs were trimmed, then we wouldn't have to buy as much software/hardware, and this means less licenses. While most of it is VMware licenses, which are relatively cheap, there are SQL licenses for Microsoft, and this is where we could start saving a lot of money."
"If one is cheap and ten is expensive, I rate the product price an eight out of ten."
"We have seen good ROI results. It has made our lives easier."
"The value that we get from vROps is okay. It could be cheaper."
