IBM WebSphere Application Server is currently at version 9.0.5.23. In recent months, they released fix 23, as they periodically release fixes. Previously, they frequently increased versions, but now they maintain 9.0.5 with different releases. It's based on Java J2EE 7 and Java SDK 1.8. Oracle announced that 2030 will be the last year when Java SDK 1.8 will be supported. Oracle currently deploys Java 2.x in parallel, with the latest being version 25. The future of IBM WebSphere Application Server remains uncertain since it's based on Java 1.8 and Java 7. I haven't found any white papers or official documentation from IBM outlining their trajectory post-2030.

Advanced policies and web firewall have strengthened application protection and reduced attack traffic
There were some vulnerabilities in F5. They tried to fix it, but the fixes were not available at the time because they were zero days, so they attempted to fix it, but their support was not proper. Their support should be improved because sometimes features which we need for customization take time, and they are sometimes feasible and sometimes not feasible by the team, so their support and the engineering team should improve their product. I would like to see more features regarding customization which should be built into the application, and the tool optimization should be good, and the dashboard should be more crisp and clear.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution is very stable and robust."
"It does integrate well with the Tivoli Federated Identity Management system."
"It's an awesome solution. Compared to everything else that's out there in the market right now, IBM MQ is hands down the best solution available and that's based on 40 years of IT experience."
"The integration between IBM tools and applications is very well executed."
"IBM WebSphere Application Server works well and fulfills all of the requirements that are demanded of it, so it is a product that I recommend."
"We needed this type of integration and WebShepere is the best tool for it."
"IBM WAS is extremely scalable. It is easy to add additional servers and to divide the load over servers in all kinds of ways."
"IBM WAS is the backbone for our enterprise content management suite which delivers the primary processes for our customers."
"NGINX is the best available tool today for the tasks it covers."
"The load balancing module, which is equivalent to LTM, is the focus of the PSE, and so far, the features of both are identical, and I believe NGINX has more features for securing these services, but in terms of load balancing, both are massive solutions."
"This is a great product, it has everything."
"Its versatility and capabilities make it invaluable for implementing patches and fixes when necessary."
"When you use NGINX, you have more options and power."
"I would recommend this solution."
"I need to highlight that the number one thing about NGINX is that it is free."
"The web application firewall feature has helped enhance security for our applications because most of the attacks which are performed on our website are being blocked by it, so the web application firewall is good."

Cons

"The solution is very expensive compared to an open-source stack."
"The solution consumes hardware."
"Installing or configuring a WAS server instance as a Windows Service causes a lot of problems, especially when the server needs credentials to stop."
"WebSphere is very cumbersome and not user-friendly."
"When compared with WebLogic, Weblogic is lighter and consumes less memory."
"The licensing could be improved, and I would like it to give the longevity of the lifespan of the visions."
"In spite of the solution's robustness, it is expensive and a bit difficult to support."
"IBM needs to pay attention to market changes more quickly. We now have Java 9 and very soon Java EE8. We do not want to wait for two or three years after their release until they are supported by the new version."
"Initially, I experienced hiccups whenever I installed the application. As with any application, there were initial issues, however, after receiving support, everything was rectified."
"I would like the configuration process to be more simplified."
"NGINX is a very basic load balancer and cannot do as many customizations as F5."
"I would like it to have a more user-friendly graphical interface."
"The KPI on NGINX Plus should be more focused on load balancing and the latency in application calling from the end system."
"It would be good if NGINX provided a graphical user interface."
"Only improvement needed that I would point to is scalability. With it, I mean clusterized organisation on a low level. At the moment, the best alternative is RHEL HA."
"The KPI should be more focused on load balancing and the latency in application calling from the end system."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The price of this product is higher than that of competitors."
"The licensing cost is 1,000 of euros for a 30-year table."
"WebSphere Application Server is expensive, so it may not be a good option for small companies."
"Room for improvement would only be in the licensing. As with all IBM products the licensing can be complex and expensive. Bargain well and try to get as much discount as possible. Discounts of 85% are possible. Without the discount, I think the product is overrated."
"It is very expensive."
"IBM WAS base is part of the deal when you purchase IBM FileNet P8 Content Engine."
"If your application is just a web app that does not need to scale big, you can obtain a single core license of WAS Express edition, which has almost the same features with limited processing cores. If you manage a very big application farm (i.e. need to run 10 or more WAS servers) it is better to get IBM WAS Hypervisor Edition."
"When you purchase Maximo, you get WebSphere for free."
"NGINX is a free tool in Brazil. There are some companies which do support it."
"There's an open-source version of NGINX that is free."
"It's an open source solution, so it's free."
"I am not so happy with their pricing policy, but this is not the worse thing in my life. I can tolerate it."
"NGINX Plus is worth it, if you need it. If you do not need the features or support, the free and open source package is more than capable. "
"Nginx is free. I don't have experience with the Plus version."
"I use the solution's community edition which is free of cost."
"HAProxy is cheaper than NGINX."
