A stable open source suite for modern business analytics with a useful replication feature
It would be better if more resources were available to help us learn how to use it. I wanted to use Knowage for a more extended period, but learning materials around the product were not really available and were not really straightforward. I've also seen inconsistencies between versions. For example, under the tools, especially in the cockpit, the way you create reports is now different. You will also find some configurations within a particular state, like a line chart, which differs from version to version. I think consistency is an essential feature in a product, especially for business intelligence products.

Unified semantic layer has driven informed credit risk decisions and real-time analytical insight
Performance-related issues are a concern, as in multiple reports I have seen, some reports were poorly performing. We can focus on implementation of performance so that reports are delivered within seconds. The user interface and self-service experience can be improved through modernization of the UI, addressing self-service limitations, and integrating with mobile. Technical and administrative complexities can also be addressed. Complexities such as system configuration require attention. In the initial setup of Oracle OBIEE, there are multiple things starting from infrastructure provisioning, database schemas, and WebLogic server installations. However, the RPD, the semantic layer, is the steepest hurdle. Security integration, integrating with LDAP or Active Directory, is rarely plug and play and requires deep knowledge of WebLogic. Deep knowledge is necessary when starting with the initial setup of Oracle OBIEE. Other dependencies include Java middleware and client tools. Since Oracle OBIEE deals with huge data, report performance is the biggest concern. The out-of-the-box setup is rarely optimized, so we need to manually check configuration files, such as nqsconfig.ini file settings. For recommendations in Oracle OBIEE, from what I have seen, we work with star schemas in the RPD. I always aim for the star schema in the business model, even if the physical source is normalized. This approach will impact the performance, speed of the data, and accuracy. Oracle OBIEE could improve to allow other schemas as well. Performance is a major area for improvement, and they should work on aggregating the persistence and improve the persistence wizard where we implement aggregations. Caching features have been given, including event polling tables where we can do purging and seeding, but the main focus should be with respect to schema designs.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Unified interface, a lot of tools for BI, easy configuration, standalone SDK."
"SpagoBI makes delivering reports to our clients very easy."
"Instead of just relying on emails to disperse our reports, having a central server to do this for us has helped our organization and has pushed us into a better place."
"Our customers really appreciate the self-service BI functionalities."
"The embedding feature is great."
"In terms of ROI, much better than any other solution when it offer full fledged features in open source, planned to have direct contact with SpagoBI for better support."
"The most valuable feature of SpagoBI is that it is open source and 100% free without limits."
"I can't name the features the way the Knowage community calls them because I still don't know the lingo. However, I can describe them. I like the ability to join more than one report, set all fields on one end, and replicate that on the other reports. I like that a lot. I think it's one of the features that got me using Knowage. They have tables, and I like that too. They took SQL scripts and many other scripts and enabled them to even correlate with Python. That's also one of the best things about Knowage. You could also decide to get information per user role, and this is also a feature that I like in Knowage."
"Once the tool is implemented, multiple teams want to exploit the tool, derive different business cases out of it and build different dashboards out of it."
"Our company loves the benefits of this solution and has used it for a long time."
"I have not personally used any such products related to this service, however based on the popular opinion, Microsoft Power BI is more popular. We have never switched from this software due to infrastructure and license related costs. However, my team acknowledges that the Power BI is much more enhanced and includes features that are easier to use, including its drag and drop features. I am not sure, if OBIEE has these features, due to lack of updated versions."
"Now, we can better and rapidly answer the user’s reporting needs, even if it involves different sources of information (different applications, different databases, external sources, etc.)."
"I think the most valuable features are the ability to drill down, the graphs, and the scheduling for the reports to be received in Excel on a daily basis. Users like Excel, so it's good for them that they receive the reports by email, that they don't have to specify the schedule."
"It's just drag-and-drop, versatile, very user-friendly, and intuitive."
"The scalability of the product is good."
"We have created various standard reports which are used extensively in my organization and help us to save upon duplication and data errors."

Cons

"I encountered a lot of issues when I tried to integrate the map in order to realize Intelligent Location Dashboards."
"It would be better if more resources were available to help us learn how to use it. I think consistency is an essential feature in a product, especially for business intelligence products."
"When it comes to Knowage, it's a bit heavy, it's time-consuming sometimes, it's not very fast, and definitely not as fast as other business intelligence tools in terms of getting graphical reports."
"I faced difficulties when using the email feature and documentation was scant."
"We expected the community to be bigger than what it currently is."
"The dashboard components could be better. They could do a lot more."
"We had stability issues."
"The support is very meager: We had to break our heads to figure out everything"
"We were disappointed with Oracle OBIEE, because of the performance."
"The support from Oracle OBIEE can be painful because Oracle manages its support around the globe."
"When we went from version 10 to 11, Oracle changed some of the functionality for us, and ultimately for those few customers that use it. In my opinion, we lost a little functionality there; we lost some of the streamlining, efficiency, and speed."
"While it is a user-friendly, data-driven tool, the data modeling should be easier to use."
"Users find it difficult to understand which combinations of facts and dimensions are allowed in a single report."
"The ease of building reports can be improved in the product."
"Make sure they understand the true use of it. Originally, we were shown the dashboard, all the great features that come with OBIEE and OBIA, but we weren't truly told what it takes to maintain it, what it takes to get valuable data for our company out of it."
"In the previous release of the administration tool, there were a lot of issues and compatibility issues that didn't work with OBIEE."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It allows the implementation of an effective reporting system using internal skills at a limited upfront cost."
"Knowage is open-source, and an enterprise edition is also available."
"A person only needs to pay towards the subscription costs since it is a cloud-based solution. I use the free version of Oracle OBIEE."
"It is high."
"I think to spread this across an enterprise will be a significant investment."
"Be prepared to spend a lot of time and money."
"If you compare Qlik Sense and Oracle OBIEE licensing, then Oracle products are much better. With Qlik Sense, you have to pay per client and per use. But we get Oracle OBIEE along with the Oracle database, making it much more cost-effective in the long term."
"It is reasonable, but it depends on how you're going to use it. There are no costs in addition to the standard licensing fees."
"Simplifying the data integration process would save our clients considerable costs."
"This was not an expensive product for us, although the price varies depending on conditions for each company."
