Local testing has cut our cloud costs and provides a safe sandbox for app validation
The best features LocalStack offers include the ability to test everything locally at no cost for AWS, a faster development and instant feedback cycle, offline deployment without needing internet, and it's excellent for learning AWS in a sandbox environment. Out of those features, I find myself relying on the ability to run it locally for testing at no cost the most. Using LocalStack has positively impacted my organization by saving 50-60% of our money because of using LocalStack and AWS resources on our local environment. I calculated that 56% savings mostly on infrastructure cycle because if we use AWS, we have to pay for those resources, but by using LocalStack, we do not need to provision resources on AWS, so that is how we are saving that percentage.

Platform has transformed our cloud into a secure, unified home for diverse modern applications
One of the best features of Red Hat OpenShift is that it has the catalog, the application catalog, and the operator hub, which allows us to deploy things easily and straightforward without going into a lot of hassles. This is one of the main things, in addition to having integration with ACM and ACS, where we can have the ability to manage multiple clusters and to secure them, deploy them, manage them, run GitOps and day-two operations, as well as upgrades and other functionality which is made easy using these tools. Red Hat OpenShift also provides virtualization capabilities, and I am currently working with Zain to make a project where we will convert F5 appliances to virtual machines and to manage them through Red Hat virtualization, OVE. Red Hat OpenShift is a unique platform because it provides the features for both worlds, containerization, and VMs at the same time, requiring you to learn one skillset in order to manage all of this at the same time. In the beginning, our cloud depended only on virtual machines, so I introduced this to our management to start to work with microservices and with containerization. This was adapted in our cloud, providing us the capability to sell more of these features and to reduce the hardware requirement by about thirty percent, following the trends of using containerization for all modern applications. In addition, it reduced the time to develop and to deploy a new application; all we need is using Jenkins for CI/CD. Once we commit any code, it gets triggered, and it will implement the new container in a very flexible and easy way, within seconds. This decreased the time to market and increased agility, allowing us to capture new opportunities very fast.

Pros

"Organizations should definitely check out LocalStack if they want to reduce their development and testing costs."
"Using LocalStack has positively impacted my organization by saving 50-60% of our money because of using LocalStack and AWS resources on our local environment."
"The positive impact on our organization has been massive, primarily visible in three key outcomes."
"LocalStack has positively impacted my organization by improving the quality of the software and allowing us to test comprehensively."
"LocalStack positively impacts our organization by improving cost since it runs locally without any expenses, speeding up development because we can catch all errors beforehand, and testing the entire flow before going live, making it a win-win scenario and a must-have tool that has shown significant positive outcomes."
"LocalStack positively impacts my organization because it is used across the organization, increasing the productivity of all team members, not just developers but also QAs sometimes."
"Some features of LocalStack that stand out for me are that I have the opportunity to integrate with many third-party systems, and for example, I used it in connection with PostgreSQL because we needed to use a shared database."
"All of the features LocalStack offers are great, including AWS services such as S3, SNS, and SQS."
"I think the most valuable feature this solution provides is the possibility to have support throughout the whole platform, including logging, monitoring, op features, and the like."
"Overall, the solution's security throughout the stack and software supply chain is excellent."
"We are able to operate client’s platform without downtime during security patch management each month and provide a good SLA (as scalability for applications is processed during heavy client website load, automatically)."
"The initial setup is simple, and OpenShift is open-source, so it's easy to install on any cloud platform."
"OpenShift is running on the AWS platform, which means that deployment is highly scalable and highly retainable."
"Red Hat OpenShift has positively impacted our organization by adding significantly to our revenues because what we were doing through other vendors shows that with vanilla Kubernetes, there are many features and extra advantages in Red Hat OpenShift."
"There is a quick deployment of the application, and we can scale out efficiently with the help of OpenShift."
"Great integration with Jenkins for constant integration and development. Supports all the major languages and environments - PHP, Java, Node.js, Ruby, etc."

Cons

"The Lambda application is not simple to test locally in LocalStack."
"LocalStack could be improved by adding more feedback when you use the CLI."
"LocalStack can be improved as it is currently not fully compatible with AWS services in each case, and there are limited features right now in that service."
"LocalStack can be improved by enabling all premium features, but that is not the case."
"Several of its features are paywalled and require payment."
"Resource consumption is the one pain point, as running a full LocalStack instance with multiple services can be quite heavy on our system's RAM and CPU, sometimes slowing down older developer laptops."
"One suggestion I would raise for LocalStack is that it should have closer parity with AWS, as it works well with common functionalities but there are some edge cases where it fails to emulate AWS accurately."
"The software-defined networking part of it caused us quite a bit of heartburn. We ran into a lot of problems with the difference between on-prem and cloud, where we had to make quite a number of modifications... They've since resolved it, so it's not really an issue anymore."
"Documentation and technical support could be improved. The product is good, but when we raise a case with support—say we are having an image issue—the support is not really up to the mark. It is difficult to get support... When we raise a case, their support people will hesitate to get on a call or a screen-sharing session. That is a major drawback when it comes to OpenShift."
"This solution is fairly expensive but comes at an average cost compared to other solutions in the market."
"Support could improve with faster response times, as responses are currently quite slow."
"The platform's documentation could be more comprehensive to cover the full spectrum of user needs. Sometimes, achieving specific goals is challenging due to a lack of detailed guidance."
"OpenShift can improve monitoring. Sometimes there are issues."
"One area for improvement is the documentation. They need to make it a little bit more user-friendly. Also, if you compare certain features and the installation process with Rancher, Rancher is simpler."
"It could use auto-scaling based on criteria such as transaction volume, queue backlog, etc. Currently, it is limited to CPU and memory."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"The licensing cost for OpenShift is expensive when compared to other products. RedHat also charges you additional costs apart from the standard licensing fees."
"We use the license-free version of Red Hat Openshift but we pay for the support."
"We had a Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) license for all our servers' operating systems. By having multiple Red Hat products together, you can negotiate costs and leverage on having a sort of enterprise license agreement to reduce the overall outlay or TCO."
"It's important to start small because the solution is scalable. We can build our cluster and look at the bundle option, not the external subscriptions. Talking to the people at Red Hat can save us money."
"The product has reasonable pricing."
"The product’s pricing is expensive."
"It's expensive. It may be cheaper to invest in building Vanilla Kubernetes, especially if security is not the number one motivation or requirement. Of course, that's difficult, and in some business areas, such as banking, that's not something you can put as a second priority. In other situations, a Vanilla Kubernetes with a sufficiently strong team can be cheaper and almost as effective."
"This solution is fairly expensive but comes at an average cost compared to other solutions in the market."
