Reporting on insurance finances has become robust and supports detailed geo-spatial analysis
I am quite satisfied with the reporting part of the product. However, compared to other tools, the modeling part is not as strong. Data modeling is not as easy on MicroStrategy as it is on other platforms. I have worked with the administration tool and the Architect tool for MicroStrategy, but creating a star schema is not as easy compared to other tools. Creating hierarchies and the modeling part is challenging because data modeling is one of the most important aspects of any BI project. If you can create a star schema or Snowflake schema easily, then report building becomes straightforward. Additionally, MicroStrategy's Workstation tool compared to Developer still lacks some functionality that can be done more easily on the Developer side. Workstation is a great tool, but they have not given it full functionality.

The features I find most useful in Oracle Business Intelligence Cloud Service include data visualization desktop for self-service reports. We can export using Excel and CSV files by dragging and dropping the columns to create reports. The drag-and-drop interface in Oracle Business Intelligence Cloud Service helps create dashboards for non-technical users as it is easy to use. By dragging and dropping columns, it creates a tabular view by default. We can convert these into many graphs and views such as pivot tables and other interactive graphical representations. I use self-service analytics in Oracle Business Intelligence Cloud Service.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"MicroStrategy is now the de facto tool within the organization, it's the go-to BI tool in the organization."
"MSTR can be costly and difficult to digest to begin with, but is certainly one of most structured and scalable solutions out there available in market."
"All the business units rely on the information provided by MicroStrategy for their decisions on daily basis, which increases data accuracy and saves time to build reports."
"MicroStrategy Mobile application is considered to be one of the best, for almost 4 or 5 years."
"Participating distributors have sold their unwanted trucks, reduced operational costs, increased the amount of batteries sold for every stop made, reduced hot shots, and increased sales at an average of 50%."
"Workstation and Desktop on the client side will speed up some development activities."
"We use MicroStrategy as an integrated solution with some of their other CRM type applications."
"MicroStrategy's solution for mobile is very good."
"Its ease of use and the ability to drill down into detail are the most valuable. Executive dashboarding features are the most commonly used ones."
"This solution allowed us to consolidate information from the finance and supply chain systems into aggregate reporting, which had been very difficult to create in the past."
"Initial setup was straightforward."
"The most valuable features are user-friendly and self-service tools. Users can define their reports based on available data sets, with multiple dimensions and slide and dice data capabilities."
"The solution effectively integrates with third-party products."
"Its ease of use and the ability to drill down into detail are the most valuable, and executive dashboarding features are the most commonly used ones."

Cons

"I would like to see a feature where migrations are easier. When you migrate from certain environments, it could probably be a little cleaner. Sometimes it seems to be somewhat clunky when you migrate from one environment, say a development to a test or production environment."
"Getting our data to work with the tool is where we are having issues."
"Sometimes you can do something in reports, but you cannot do the same thing in documents."
"If I am trying to do a test study or test case at an enterprise level, I am not able to do it on my own, I would have to use my company's resources, which is a bit costly."
"It crashes multiple times for even small changes that I make on the fly in the dashboard. After doing all the necessary changes, the MicroStrategy desktop or even the web version kicks the users out, and all the changes are lost. This functionality is buggy in MicroStrategy. It is hard to keep track of all the changes that I have done before. I don't want to make copies of each change that I have made because I would end up creating a hundred dashboards. It is not feasible in a real environment. I haven't worked on integrating MicroStrategy with the cloud. I am not sure how it behaves in the cloud, but I have heard from a few of my friends that there are some hiccups when you kind of sync to the cloud through MicroStrategy."
"There are limited features available for the overall enterprise performance management and analysis."
"The solution's reports are not very flexible."
"Visual Insight, as I see, has improved a lot but it still lacks the analytics capability of other tools such as Tableau."
"Some of the advanced analytics need work, and I believe there's an opportunity to improve or simplify the integration with data power users and data science users."
"The dashboard could be improved and include additional features."
"I didn't interact with them for this solution, but from a broader perspective, my experience with Oracle is that their tech support sits somewhere between low and fair."
"When looking at web-based BI or cloud-based BI vendors, there should be abilities for power users to build deep analysis. If they are not data science tools, they are not for power users."
"Quality of support varies."
"In terms of data modeling, it could be simplified. Sometimes, it seems complicated. Also, the response time for data set refreshes could be faster to enhance the user experience."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It would be nice if there was a sticker price that says, "This software costs this amount of money." But I think that's just indicative of all software vendors. A lot of people are in it to make money, commissions, so it's just the nature of the business. But I would like to see more transparency, more equality, on pricing. Some people get better deals than others, I think."
"Now, the price is high."
"For larger businesses, the pricing is logical."
"There have been actual direct bottomline impacts in terms of extra revenue created from the reporting solutions."
"All BI software vendors' list prices are high. It's about a price that fits the customer's needs. And I think MicroStrategy has some flexibility in its pricing model where we can easily demonstrate a total cost of ownership comparison against any of the other players."
"They made a change in the licensing module some time ago and we can now use all the enterprise tools for free."
"The pricing is fair."
"They can improve its licensing. It is a bit expensive as compared to Microsoft and other tools."
"The solution's pricing is reasonable compared to other products."
"Oracle products are always going to be on the higher end of your price scale. You have to kind of accept that going in."
