Reporting on insurance finances has become robust and supports detailed geo-spatial analysis
I am quite satisfied with the reporting part of the product. However, compared to other tools, the modeling part is not as strong. Data modeling is not as easy on MicroStrategy as it is on other platforms. I have worked with the administration tool and the Architect tool for MicroStrategy, but creating a star schema is not as easy compared to other tools. Creating hierarchies and the modeling part is challenging because data modeling is one of the most important aspects of any BI project. If you can create a star schema or Snowflake schema easily, then report building becomes straightforward. Additionally, MicroStrategy's Workstation tool compared to Developer still lacks some functionality that can be done more easily on the Developer side. Workstation is a great tool, but they have not given it full functionality.

Enterprise Architecture at a energy/utilities company with 1,001-5,000 employees
The analytics ability is pre-built. We're trying to get the same quality set of services out of the product.
We're looking to see what the total cost of ownership is; from housing our data internally and running the product, to putting it into the cloud and letting Oracle manage that as a service, and we just provision the information out and get the data back. We're trying to see the total cost of ownership for the hardware and the infrastructure into the cloud, and getting the same quality set of services out of the product. Something interesting that’s going on in the utility industry is, as we've collected data on our customer, we tend to have federated pockets of information, yet the traditional BI is not addressing those things. People have been coming to us with solutions of, "Hey, send us your data. We've already done these things for other utility industries, other utility customers." You're basically riding once and leveraging it across the whole industry.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The ability to integrate with PPT is another plus. The platform's ability to write back data directly to the database is also good."
"We are embedding multimedia content in our apps... You can embed streaming video from websites, or you can host the video files on your internal media servers. The video is clear, absolutely."
"If the developers and end-users know how to use it in depth, it is one awesome BI tool."
"If you have data, it is not that complex. It's manageable even for end users."
"MicroStrategy is the best of all enterprise solutions on a price/value axis."
"If you are trying to do analytics, it is a fantastic product, a top-tier product."
"There is a ROI from MicroStrategy."
"Working as a BI Consultant, I have to develop different analyses, reports and dashboard documents to analyze the status of different business measures."
"Through my interactions with them, I’m finding that they're knowledgeable."

Cons

"As the development or customization of this tool is a crutch, people do not prefer to get into this technology."
"Currently, the client view looks completely different depending on what you are building."
"If you compare it with Power BI with the DAX language, it would be great to put that into MicroStrategy."
"Deployment or more to the point adaptability to the different markets and local branches was a bit shaky. It still doesn't suit perfectly every branch."
"We have encountered stability issues with regards to Metadata db being crashed and need to reload the Project and configure it to various Project repositories"
"The product is designed for enterprise. A lightweight version would be easier for a smaller workgroup."
"Creating a dashboard is a very tedious and manual process."
"If the Enterprise Manager was a little bit less quirky when you build out-of-the-box customization reports for it, I probably would give it a 10, but just those small things bring it down a little bit for me."
"My rating reflects that, quite often, we don't know what we want, and the solution thinks they know what you want."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"While initial cost of MicroStrategy is still on the higher side, the long-term benefits brings down overall cost of ownership significantly as compared to other tools like Tableau/Cognos."
"They gave us a good deal."
"The pricing list itself is not publicly accessible, so it's a bit opaque."
"The solution’s licensing cost is expensive."
"We are waiting to switch to Microsoft Power BI because MicroStrategy is too costly."
"The solution is scalable. A little expensive perhaps, but it is scalable."
"We have one of the best pricing available, but we can't disclose that information."
"All BI software vendors' list prices are high. It's about a price that fits the customer's needs. And I think MicroStrategy has some flexibility in its pricing model where we can easily demonstrate a total cost of ownership comparison against any of the other players."
