Reporting on insurance finances has become robust and supports detailed geo-spatial analysis
I am quite satisfied with the reporting part of the product. However, compared to other tools, the modeling part is not as strong. Data modeling is not as easy on MicroStrategy as it is on other platforms. I have worked with the administration tool and the Architect tool for MicroStrategy, but creating a star schema is not as easy compared to other tools. Creating hierarchies and the modeling part is challenging because data modeling is one of the most important aspects of any BI project. If you can create a star schema or Snowflake schema easily, then report building becomes straightforward. Additionally, MicroStrategy's Workstation tool compared to Developer still lacks some functionality that can be done more easily on the Developer side. Workstation is a great tool, but they have not given it full functionality.

Real-time executive visibility has replaced spreadsheets and drives daily sales decisions
Toucan Toco offers excellent features, including the quick ability to create Stories and KPIs based on the data that we're storing in our data warehouse. We leverage the functionality within Toucan Toco to quickly build out a code-free environment, providing a code-free way of sharing both graphs and KPIs to track and deliver visibility to key data elements. Toucan Toco has positively impacted our organization because we previously were using Excel spreadsheets to share data out to the team, and now we're using Toucan Toco to share information in real time. This shift to real-time sharing has brought clarity to consistent metrics and real-time visibility to activity.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The convenience of it, having it on the mobile so someone has it right there in their pocket most of the time, works well for reporting on daily sales activities."
"It's useful if you need to create dashboards that you check every day. Also, we can create a queue, but it will be updated every day with scheduled updates."
"MicroStrategy was a better fit for our company needs due to its robust architecture, mobile-ready dashboards and a good pipeline of features coming in the future."
"Perfect balance between self-service and governed BI."
"We have been using it mostly for grid reports and its exporting features."
"We switched because MicroStrategy is the most-advanced and feature-rich tool."
"Dossiers are going to change the name of the game for us. We want to be able to have the executive committee go into a meeting and tell a story. We want them to tell us a story, not us."
"The scalability is great. It was one of the selling points for us on MicroStrategy."
"Toucan Toco has positively impacted our organization because we previously were using Excel spreadsheets to share data out to the team, and now we're using Toucan Toco to share information in real time."

Cons

"The setup is quite complex and requires extra configurations."
"The product is not business-user friendly."
"Lacks decent visualization and the process for creating new objects needs to be simplified."
"Data preparation-wise, it was not so straightforward with respect to getting different sources. Preparing or transforming the data inside and then bringing it onto the dashboard was a bit difficult, and the experience could have been better."
"I would like to see the enterprise version available in a demo or as a trial version."
"Support: The support line used to be top notch, but now it seems as though the people manning that line are not very knowledgeable and can very rarely actually answer the question or solve the problem."
"Sometimes trying to follow MSTR rules to get some formulas and data using MSTR techniques is harder (and less performant) than just prepare yet another DWH view collecting needed data and just model that new view in MSTR."
"I would like to see a single standalone application to control everything from the administration perspective, and also to develop new applications."
"I chose nine because Stories can cascade on top of each other and be a bit complicated when they create multiple data sets underneath the Stories to manage."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We have one of the best pricing available, but we can't disclose that information."
"They need to work on their license structure. They are not competitive against somebody like SAP BusinessObjects. We had a quote that was almost a third the price, coming from SAP BusinessObjects, and it's not a better platform. It's not cheaper. They do concurrent user licensing, while MicroStrategy does named user licensing, and that was literally the only difference. But it made a $500,000 difference. They've got to do something to make themselves more competitive. Maybe it's assessing your business users and what you really expect them to use, and maybe giving a reduced price on that. But they are already giving us a 60% discount and they were still a million or so above, over a three-year time period. That doesn't account for synergies as we get from on-site resources that are already available, but I thought that that was a big, big deficit for them."
"The solution is scalable. A little expensive perhaps, but it is scalable."
"The licensing is a bit high per user."
"While initial cost of MicroStrategy is still on the higher side, the long-term benefits brings down overall cost of ownership significantly as compared to other tools like Tableau/Cognos."
"The price was good. We have had great support along the way."
"There is no subscription, I am using the free version."
"We are waiting to switch to Microsoft Power BI because MicroStrategy is too costly."
