A highly flexible and customizable learning management system with a wide range of features, providing educators with the tools to create engaging and interactive online courses
Moodle has proven to be highly effective for training and professional development within our organization. It has replaced the traditional practice of sending individuals on courses across the country, offering coast-to-coast accessibility. We've also begun utilizing badges for internal certification, streamlining the process of recognizing achievement. As its usage has expanded, we started with native Moodle on our section and have since extended it to other groups. The integration of third-party plugins or tools has influenced our utilization of Moodle. While we haven't implemented as many filters as we potentially could have, one individual has managed administration duties and the integration of these tools. This individual has also been involved in other areas, dedicating significant time to programming within Moodle for a specific program for one group. This process has spanned several years, demonstrating the commitment required to bring these enhancements to fruition.

Clear instructions and effective learning with room for market reach and language expansion
Regarding areas of Skillsoft that I would like to see improved or enhanced in the future, the platform is already very good and nice. If Skillsoft is launching its platform worldwide, they should be language specific. While I can understand English, if someone does not understand it, they should have tutors for their regions as well, so they can develop more certification programs in languages understood by the majority of people. I rate it a seven because they are missing two points: they do not have much market reach, and it should be more convenient in local languages of nations as they are approaching the worldwide area. Similar to how Netflix has multiple channel swapping options, if Skillsoft is training worldwide, they need to have the option for language selection.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable feature is the community. Moodle is a completely open source application and provides a lot of development knowledge. The other features we find valuable are the LTI tools, integrations and BigBlueButton."
"The monitoring aspect is important for students."
"Cost-effective and intuitive."
"The valuable features of Moodle include its open-source nature, which makes it free to use, and the supportive community that assists with any issues."
"The number of permissions that are available and different ways to report and get the information out are the most valuable features. We have been able to get precise bits of information out, and we have also been able to delegate a lot."
"It doesn't take long to learn how to use it and to set up basic courses and things like that."
"Since it's an open-source product, you can integrate it with many other things."
"Moodle integrates with many third party plugins, which has enabled us to make use of the latest technology. During the Covid 19 period, we used a plugin called BigBlueButton to facilitate online learning which was quick and easy to do."
"What I find best about Skillsoft is that it's easy to navigate and find program details."
"The course has given me tools and key points which help me stay focused during boring tasks, from daily job deadlines, I have to complete work in the given time framework, take small breaks between jobs, and reward and motivate myself with whatever I enjoy most so that I can complete tasks by the deadline."
"What I appreciate best about Skillsoft is how the class is structured, including how everything is organized - the courses, videos, and then the test at the end."
"The amount of courses on offer is great."
"The course has given me tools and key points which help me stay focused during boring tasks, from daily job deadlines, I have to complete work in the given time framework, take small breaks between jobs, and reward and motivate myself with whatever I enjoy most so that I can complete tasks by the deadline."
"Skillsoft provides an extensive content library, personalized learning path, and blended learning support; additionally, it provides mobile accessibility so users can access it directly from their mobile whenever they have time, and robust analytics is also available, providing good reporting on the analytics side, such as how users are performing and how they are getting grades, which is very helpful for year-end performance assessments of the end user."
"When I was introduced to Skillsoft, I gained many skills and obtained my Microsoft Azure certification, which helped me secure a position as a Cloud Engineer at Sutherland."
"The platform is user-friendly and very easy to use; we don't need any training or coaching to use the platform, and by nature, it's easy to navigate through it."

Cons

"The solution should continue to allow and foster the ability to integrate with cloud services."
"Moodle is missing a subscription-based system where learners can subscribe to available courses and make the payment for those courses."
"The solution architecture could be improved."
"Sometimes, discrepancies arise when the information is not updated or lacks precision, potentially leading to the model producing misleading or incorrect outputs based on its training."
"Its interface design could be more user-friendly."
"An improvement would be to have it support physically challenged students, who we think should be able to participate in some of our courses."
"One aspect that I found a bit confusing was the dual editing system, where you could edit the layout of the course separately from editing the content."
"Everything is very text heavy. There are no videos or moving images. For a visual learner, there's not a lot of visual content so Moodle is not suitable for all types of learners."
"Skillsoft is already good, but I would appreciate more visual content."
"I prefer Coursera more than Skillsoft because Coursera has a specific market approach that is better than Skillsoft."
"Sometimes the system logs out in the middle of classes without any reason and asks me to log in again."
"It is providing numerous content library courses. However, it is not giving us hands-on experience training where we are getting practical related material, instead of theory related material."
"LinkedIn seems to have more content in general. It's easier to share the certifications on LinkedIn, which is one of my platforms of work."
"The only issues I truly have with it are signing issues. This is primarily because it has split sign-in credentials."
"The quality of the courses could be better."
"I prefer Coursera more than Skillsoft because Coursera has a specific market approach that is better than Skillsoft."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"In terms of cost, it is available at no charge."
"This particular organization is a relatively small academic institution. It is a single campus, not very big, with 4,500 to 5,000 total students. It is not a big faculty. There are no hard sciences other than undergraduate-level hard sciences. So, Moodle is functional, and it is relatively simple because it is open-source software. It has sub advantages, and it is inexpensive. Small schools with small enrollment numbers just can't afford the more expensive ones."
"It is open source, and it has a lot of free documentation. It can be by far the least expensive option, but it depends on how one decides to use it. It can be free if you download it and host it on-prem, and you don't count your time as being worth anything. So, it can be almost free, or it can be very expensive just depending on if you get a package with a provider and if it is a huge solution."
"Moodle is a free open-sourced solution. This is one of the best aspects of Moodle."
"The licensing cost is quite high and it operates on an annual basis."
"Moodle is an open-source solution that is free of cost."
"Moodle have a very robust licensing system that is user friendly. It's not very expensive."
"Moodle is a free online learning platform, but it also offers a paid version of it."
