A tool for data warehousing that offers scalability, stability, and ease of setup
The initial setup of Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse is easy and basic, especially if one doesn't use the tricks to get Oracle Exadata for use. One doesn't need to know or be involved in technical stuff to do the setup since, at the least, knowledge might be required when working with some external connections, but it is easy because everything can be done within a couple of clicks. The solution is deployed on the cloud. For deployment, you don't need any technical guidance since you can sit, find it on the web, and prepare an Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse platform by yourself for free for a limited time. The people needed for the deployment and maintenance depend on the implementation one wants. If you do a simple implementation, you don't need anybody for maintenance since everything is on the cloud. You only have to schedule your backup or see if Oracle can schedule a backup, and you don't take care of the backup. For some more sophisticated or technical implementations, you will need staff for some data warehouse except for some parts of the maintenance like backup, patches, or upgrades since these are a few things you take care of in the background, and you only seek help with the maintenance part, if needed.

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It provides Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) capabilities by default to address data security issues."
"With Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse, things are much simpler. Creating a structure, initializing the servers, extending the servers, those are all things that are very, very easy. That's the main reason we use it."
"It is a very stable tool...It is an extremely scalable tool."
"Self-patching and runs machine-learning across its logs all the time"
"The analytics have been very good. We've found them to be quite useful."
"It is an extremely scalable solution since you can dynamically change the resources as some other cloud solutions."
"The solution is used for analytics and it works for our data security needs."
"The product is easy to use."
"The fast columnar store database structure allows our query times to be at least 10x faster than on any other database."
"Vertica's most outstanding features are the compression rates achieved and the speed of access of high volume data."
"The feature of the product that is most important is the speed. I needed a columnar database, and its speed is what it's built to do, and so that's what really does differentiate Vertica from its competitors."
"The hardware usage and speed has been the most valuable feature of this solution. It is very fast and has saved us a lot of money."
"I enjoy the cybersecurity and backup features."
"It maximize cloud economics for mission-critical big data analytical initiatives."
"Vertica gives knowledgeable users and DBAs excellent tools for tuning."
"Speed and resiliency are probably the best parts of this product."

Cons

"The solution lacks visibility options."
"They should make the solution more user-friendly."
"Sometimes the solution works differently between the cloud and on-premises. It needs to be more consistent and predictable."
"An improvement for us would be the inclusion of support for an internal IP, so we could use it directly with the VCN in Oracle Cloud."
"A lot of the tools that were previously there have now been taken away."
"It is very important the integration with other platforms be made to be as easy as it is with an on-premises deployment."
"Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse is not available as an on-premises solution."
"The installation process is complex. Oracle can make the installation process better."
"It would be great if this were a managed service in AWS."
"The integration of this solution with ODI could be improved."
"Vertica seems to scale well, except for one use case where you are on a multi-node cluster. For example, if you had a nine-node cluster, one node goes down, then the eight nodes don't scale, because the absence of the node is very apparent, which is a problem. If you have nine nodes or multiple nodes, the whole idea is that if one of those nodes goes down, then you should not see an impact on the system if you have enough capacity. Even though we have enough capacity, you can still see the impact of the one node going down."
"I believe the installation process could be streamlined."
"The product could improve by adding support for a wider variety of data types and enhancing features to better compete with other databases."
"We faced some challenges when trying to use the temporary tables feature."
"Performance of management of metadata layer (database catalog) needs improvement. We still have to have smaller customers on PostgreSQL; Vertica cannot manage thousands of schemata."
"In a future release, we would like to have artificial intelligence capabilities like neural networks. Customers are demanding this type of analytics."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse's pricing is fair and reasonable compared to the other cloud vendors."
"The solution is expensive."
"We pay approximately $70,000 per month. The cost includes maintenance and support."
"On a scale from one to ten, where one is a low price and ten is a high price, I rate the pricing an eight."
"You pay as you go, and you don't pay for services that you don't use."
"ROI is high."
"The licensing cost of the product can vary since you can integrate it very easily with other products or other cloud products...You pay as you use it, so it is not yearly or monthly payments to be made toward Oracle."
"The solution's cost is reasonable."
"It's an expensive product"
"The pricing could improve, it is a little expensive."
"It is fast to purchase through the AWS Marketplace."
"From a cost perspective, the software is less than most of its competitors."
"It's difficult today to compete with open-source solutions. In these areas, there is a lot of competition and the price of this solution is a bit pricy."
"I think it's starting to get a little expensive. Open source products are starting to get more robust, so I think that's something that they need to start looking at in terms of licensing."
"I am aware that we have licensed it, but I have no knowledge of its cost."
"The price could be cheaper and it is best to negotiate the price."
