Designing audio circuits has benefited from rich measurements but reliability still needs improvement
A quick specific example of an electronic design task where I used Rohde & Schwarz Oscilloscopes is a digital amplifier. I found the basics for my needs to be met by Rohde & Schwarz Oscilloscopes, but it did have a nice large display. I liked the large display. It was reasonably intuitive for all that it did. I liked the fact that it had 16 extra digital inputs on the side that you could clip on to, so it had plenty of channels. It probably helped with specific tasks or saved me time due to the fact it had data recording. I could record data for a period of time. It had a long memory for a particular waveform.

B-scan is its most valuable feature. However, we are looking for an Intel platform with the newest chipset.
Try it if it is within your budget. It is a good product. The learning curve is very quick. It takes about one or two days. While we have plans to use this product to support connect devices, we are not currently doing so. We are currently measuring signals from 3.0 and 4.0, and looking for 5.0.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The ability to have both the time domain and frequency domain, where the frequency domain is a very broad spectral plot, is extremely valuable."
"Since I spend quite some time in the lab, this product makes my life easier, results better, and speeds up my work."
"The product is quite reliable and straightforward to use. Typically, there are no households that we have to set up."
"I have been able to do quality measurements that I have been unable to achieve with the equipment from some other vendors."
"It has a very low noise floor."
"The characterization of RF channels was helpful... The user interface was very simple to operate and there were a lot of tutorials."
"They are a top tier product, and we use it to guarantee our top tier product, which is why we purchased it."
"The instrument has a wide bandwidth, you can sweep across a wide range of frequencies, the resolution is good, and the accuracy is pretty good."
"Being able to monitor data from a CAN bus while the vehicle is running will cut down a lot of the feedback for the design mode."
"The technical support is great; they come in, they show us how to use it, and if we have questions, they'll give presentations."
"This solution provides high confidence in the data being presented in the measurement to inform a design decision going forward."
"The most valuable features are everything they do. We primarily use the O-scopes and they help us figure out what's going wrong with our scope out signals."
"When we connect Tektronix through our test boxes, that is the internet of things, because I have reached the Internet through the box."
"The sensitivity of the trigger and the reliability are the most valuable features, and the scopes were extremely reliable."
"We have multiple systems for manufacturing tests, and it's critical for our support. The support increases our productivity."
"Technical support is great."

Cons

"The depth the the user GUI could be improved. It is a bit deep for new users. During the first two weeks we spent a lot of time finding the tabs."
"User interface is okay. I would probably rate it a seven out of ten."
"The user interface of this solution is not that intuitive."
"I paid too much for how much use I got out of it."
"In the next release, I would like to see report generation. It would make it a lot easier to refer back to and, when doing final testing, seeing what went on during the pre-test would help."
"It has good performance, reliability, and support, but it is too expensive."
"The GUI could be improved since the hierarchy is a little complicated for the new users."
"I'm against the Windows-based tools. Now everybody is running scopes, VNAs, and all their tools based on Windows. I don't want to see that in the future."
"If you are dealing with time domain measurement, I strongly recommend using a vendor other than this company."
"There is room for improvement when it comes to the screen size. I don't really have a lot of complaints but screen size would be the biggest thing."
"We would like more features for the CAN bus decoding, such as importing DDC files, which allows us to take the raw data and convert it into engineering units."
"There are other devices out there which are more capable, offering more features, with as good quality tech support."
"I would like if they could have more customer support engagement."
"The ruggedness could be improved."
"In terms of room for improvement, it's a powerful scope. But, the power of the computer inside is weak."
"I am not utilizing the full bandwidth of this product."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The pricing is very expensive."
"The pricing is expensive, but very fair when you look at the technology that you are getting. These are higher-end pieces which have a ton of engineering in them that is not evident on the package. However, you could imagine the amount of time that the vendor has spent on the firmware, optimizing the internal layout, developing custom ICs, etc. They're releasing a mass produced product, but these things are built to last."
"If we are looking to purchase a product, we ask for a loaner for a month or so to test it out. Then, we will make a decision."
"The pricing is way too expensive."
"One of the things I liked less, not only me but also my company, was that Rohde & Schwarz are very expensive... There are solutions that are almost the same that sell at better prices."
"Buying Rohde & Schwarz gear is like buying a Mercedes. It raises eyebrows when you're asking for that level of performance."
"The pricing is very competitive."
"The pricing is too high."
"The prices are compatible with what they offer. Going forward, I would like them to become more competitive and dominant with their pricing in the market."
"It costs a quarter of a million. This technology is not cheap."
"Tektronix Oscilloscopes are really expensive for small businesses. The low-end scopes don't really compare performance-wise to what the other companies provide, like RIGOL . Mostly that just has to do with the software options."
"I would like to see a lower price."
"The pricing is not too high and not too low."
"They have academic pricing which is helpful."
"Tecktronix pricing tends to be pretty fair and reasonable with current market trends. They don't usually bump up the price too much."
"Pricing could be lower. I would want to buy it for an extremely, low price, but Tektronix is a high-end product."
