Great architecture and verification features
Pros and Cons
  • "Good architecture and produces a lot of IOPS."
  • "A valuable feature for me is the architecture which is pretty good, we have a good throughput and we like that they have a lot of IOPS and low latency is also pretty good, and we also like the verification features because we get some good things with the method Nimble takes to duplicate."
  • "The solution needs to be an active-active controller."
  • "When I'm competing against someone, I would like Nimble to be an active-active controller."

What is our primary use case?

The companies that bought this solution from us use it for VMware. They have also used some Oracle in the Red Hat operating system. It's mostly used for the VMware environment. The companies we provide the solution to are generally medium size; one of them is a hospital and the other is an agency that controls the sale of gas. We are partners of HPE Nimble Storage and I'm the technical manager of the company.

What is most valuable?

A valuable feature for me is the architecture which is pretty good. We have a good throughput and we like that they have a lot of IOPS and low latency is also pretty good. And we also like the verification features because we get some good things with the method Nimble takes to duplicate. If you have a hybrid secondary storage, it allows you to do remote copy, data recovery and business continuity with the solution. And the integration with some other solutions is also good. For now, Nimble has a way of integrating with each solution, it's very good.

What needs improvement?

When I'm competing against someone, I would like Nimble to be an active-active controller. As it is now, Nimble is an active-passive controller. If the customer is looking for an active-active controller, then we can't use Nimble and have to go with Primera. Nimble gives us a lot of good things, but without the active-active controller, it's pointless.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using this solution for a year.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support is pretty good. We do the iteration ourselves, because we have the experience and we provide first-hand support, given the service qualifications that HPE expects from us. Beyond that, Nimble has good support, because it also has Infosight, another value-added solution for Nimble. Infosight has around 10 years of log collection. We provide good first line support to our customers and I think it's important for them to have that.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Nimble competes against IBM Storwize and Dell. The main reason we went with Nimble was that we have over 10 years of experience with Infosight.

What other advice do I have?

We'll use this solution more in the future. With what I see now with the segregated hyper-converged infrastructure, I think that Nimble is going to get a lot more clients because hyper-converged solutions are a closed box and customers want this kind of solution. Customers felt that with the hyper-converged solutions, their hands were tied.

I would recommend this solution. It's been around for over 10 years, working with machine learning in artificial intelligence. It has inline deduplication for all flash storage, and a hybrid version that gives a lot of features. It's an architecture that's based on the controller.

The only drawback of this solution is the active-passive controller, otherwise I rate it very highly.

I rate this solution a nine out of 10.

Plenty of features, user friendly, and portal useful
Pros and Cons
  • "Some of the beneficial features I have found are the Block-level backups, the interface is easy to use, backups work well and the portal is functional."
  • "The SAN has been great, it has been a big help."
  • "We want to start storing data in the cloud really soon and we are looking at options."
  • "The solution is a little pricey compared to others on the market."

What is our primary use case?

The solution is used for a storage area network(SAN) that we store files and backups on.

How has it helped my organization?

The SAN has been great, it has been a big help.

What is most valuable?

Some of the beneficial features I have found are the Block-level backups, the interface is easy to use, backups work well and the portal is functional.

What needs improvement?

We want to start storing data in the cloud really soon and we are looking at other options. If there is a solution that could combine Azure backup and interconnect it with storage on-premises and on the cloud, this would be great. This solution could already exist by HP, I have not done the research yet or know what the process looks like.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I had no problems with stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability is something we are looking into with HA and failover features at other locations. This is part of that project we are working on. I do not know right now exactly how scalable the solution is but I might know soon.

Our whole company SAN, uses the solution of approximately 700 employees.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is a little pricey compared to others on the market.

What other advice do I have?

I rate HPE Nimble Storage a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

  • "The replay and IOPS work well, it's user-friendly, and we're satisfied with it."
  • "The dashboard can be improved."
  • "The dashboard can be improved. I would like to see more details on the dashboard in the next release."

What is our primary use case?

We have a server that needs a faster distribution solution, and we use Nimble for its storage.

What is most valuable?

The replay and IOPS work well. It's user-friendly, and we're satisfied with it.

What needs improvement?

The dashboard can be improved. I would like to see more details on the dashboard in the next release.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using HPE Nimble Storage for about three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

HPE Nimble Storage is stable. All the drives are functioning well so far, and you only have to do maintenance on a yearly basis.

How are customer service and technical support?

The support response time is good.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward. We were able to implement it quite quickly.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

HPE Nimble Storage didn't require a license at the time.

Easy to set up, performs well, and the technical support is helpful
Pros and Cons
  • "This product is very easy to set up."
  • "This product is very easy to set up, and the design of the hardware and software lends itself to great performance and redundancy."
  • "The quality of technical support depends on which member of the support team you speak with."
  • "The quality of technical support depends on which member of the support team you speak with."

What is our primary use case?

I use HPE Nimble for my SAN storage solution.

What is most valuable?

This product is very easy to set up.

The design of the hardware and software lends itself to great performance and redundancy.

What needs improvement?

The quality of technical support depends on which member of the support team you speak with.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been familiar with HPE Nimble Storage for some time, but have just started using it six months ago.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Nimble Storage has been stable for me so far.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability has not been a problem.

How are customer service and technical support?

The technical support people are great although, of course, it depends on who you speak with. Overall, however, they are great.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

The only other product that I have experience with is Dell Compellent.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price is negotiable and when we first received the quote it was expensive, but after dealing with them and receiving a discount, the price is reasonable.

What other advice do I have?

This is a good product and if anybody asks me for SAN storage then I recommend HPENimble.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Stability at a price that we expect, but the non-standard dimensions create challenges
Pros and Cons
  • "In the 20 days that we have been using this solution, it has been stable."
  • "From what we have investigated, it's pretty scalable, and the preliminary test shows that it does what we want it to do."
  • "The most difficult part about Nimble was the fact that it didn't have a standard length."
  • "The most difficult part about Nimble was the fact that it didn't have a standard length. It had a prolonged length to standard servers, which made it slightly challenging to get it installed and we had to switch racks around."

What is our primary use case?

We will be using this solution for virtualizing specific workloads that we have.

What needs improvement?

The most difficult part about Nimble was the fact that it didn't have a standard length. It had a prolonged length to standard servers, which made it slightly challenging to get it installed and we had to switch racks around.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using HPE Nimble Storage for 20 days.

We are still in the installation phase, but will probably be using the latest version.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

In the 20 days that we have been using this solution, it has been stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

From what we have investigated, it's pretty scalable.

The preliminary test shows that it does what we want it to do. We will continue using this solution in the future.

We have approximately 20 users in our organization.

How are customer service and technical support?

We have not contacted the technical support yet.

How was the initial setup?

We have a team of five to maintain this product.

What about the implementation team?

We had an HPE engineer install this solution. We purchased the installation package with it.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I would classify it as an expensive product. It's a high-end product.

It's quite expensive, but it's what you would expect from a storage box.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated Pure Storage FlashArray and IBM Storwize, which is now called IBM Flash Array.

What other advice do I have?

This is a solution that I would recommend to others who are interested in using it.

I would rate HPE Nimble Storage a seven out of ten.

Good performance and processor, with a good support system for assistance
Pros and Cons
  • "The performance and the processor are good."
  • "The performance and the processor are good, HPE has very good technology in terms of storage, and they have very good support assistance."
  • "I would like to see an added feature to auto-fix, or a dynamic alerting system on storage."
  • "Nimble Storage is too expensive for our enterprise customers."

What is our primary use case?

We are resellers. We provide products to our customers.

Unfortunately, we were not able to sell this product because it is too expensive. We use it in our own cloud. We created a VMware VCPP cloud to provide VMware services to our enterprise customers.

What is most valuable?

The performance and the processor are good.

HPE has very good technology in terms of storage, and they have very good support assistance.

What needs improvement?

The problem is the price. It needs to be improved.

I would like to see an added feature to auto-fix, or a dynamic alerting system on storage. This is very important because we would like to prevent a disk failure before it happens.

If we had some sort of AI in place to alert us then we could replace the disk before it occurs.

Also, we would like to receive alerts if space is over the limits. This is necessary for us.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been selling HPE Nimble Storage for a few months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's a scalable product. We have one POC user in our organization.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is good. HPE has a good channel system in Taiwan.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Previously, we used Dell.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Nimble Storage is too expensive for our enterprise customers.

What other advice do I have?

We are still trying other products. HPE GreenLake has very nice packaging. It's a financial program, and we used Nimble through this financing program. We didn't purchase it, we were testing.

We are still testing other products, such as Dell Storage.

We have some local storage vendors, so we are not formally using it in production.

We are not able to recommend this product as we are still in the testing phase. We are still doing the POC tests.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Easy to set up, good documentation, and the mirroring is useful
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature is data mirroring."
  • "The pricing is better than some of the competitors, such as Dell EMC."
  • "Scalability, in terms of being able to scale out, is not easy and should be improved."
  • "Scalability, in terms of being able to scale out, is not easy and should be improved."

What is our primary use case?

We are a solution provider and Nimble is one of the storage products that we implement for our clients.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is data mirroring.

The documentation is good.

What needs improvement?

Scalability, in terms of being able to scale out, is not easy and should be improved.

In the future, I would like to see the vendor upgrade the hardware.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Nimble Storage for seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This product is definitely stable and we use it on a daily basis.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scaling up is easy, but scaling out is not easy.

We have a team of five people who are responsible for maintenance. There are a very large number of end-users.

How are customer service and technical support?

I have never been in contact with technical support because we have sanctions that prohibit it. When I need assistance then I seek help in the community.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have worked with other similar solutions and I find that there are no big differences between them.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very easy.

What about the implementation team?

Once the solution has been delivered, I can set it up myself.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is better than some of the competitors, such as Dell EMC.

What other advice do I have?

My advice for anybody who is implementing Nimble Storage is to perform a step-by-step deployment, and write down the steps as you go. This will ultimately save a lot of time if you experience any problems.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

A reliable solution that improves efficiency and reduces the burden on our database team
Pros and Cons
  • "Not only is it high performing, but it is also more compact and fits better in our storage arrays than equipment from other storage providers."
  • "This product has proven itself to be very reliable and we're looking forward to where it's going to take us in the future."
  • "I would like to see more advanced analytics in the next release of this solution."
  • "I would like to see more advanced analytics in the next release of this solution."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case if for our central data storage. This contains our files, financial services, and customer data.

How has it helped my organization?

We are a 24/7 operation, even though our corporate office is a typical Monday through Friday operation. It is vital that we have all of our data up and running, all of the time because a lot of our customers have what they call "volume runs" during the month. For example, one of our customers is subscription-based, so we have to run about three million packages during a two-week timeframe. All of the data has to be fully accessible and we can't afford to have any downtime.

This solution has increased our performance by ten to fifteen percent. From both an operational standpoint and management perspective, it is an improvement. It has also reduced costs and allowed us to allocate more towards other projects.

My engineers have said that this solution has improved our throughput. This has helped because when a customer comes up asked for a solution then we can guarantee it will actually meet the demand for their product or service.

The All-Flash storage positions us for growth because of the speed aspect. We have pool data that doesn’t have to be accessed quickly, but when it comes to other things then we are required to be on the spot. This is especially true for SQL databases.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features of this solution are it's reliability and the redundancy that it provides. This is also a good product from a financial perspective.

The performance of this solution allows us to have real-time access for SQL databases.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see more advanced analytics in the next release of this solution. Perhaps it will help us to see things that we're not seeing already.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have almost one hundred percent uptime. It seems very reliable and cost-effective, and it seems like it can be molded to any solution that you need.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

From what I have heard, it is extremely scalable. It is interesting because you can start with a very small margin and expand to as high as you want, with very little effort on the side of the end-user.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support for this solution is very good. It's always on-demand, and we never feel like we're too far off from getting support. It's always available when we need it, and you're getting a live person a lot faster than you would from other providers.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did not use another solution prior to this one.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of this solution was a lot more straightforward than we thought it was going to be.

What about the implementation team?

We handled the deployment in-house.

What was our ROI?

The ROI from this solution comes from the savings in time, just from managing and keeping everything up and running. It also reduces the stress and burden on our database team.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We looked at providers other than HP, such as Pure Storage, but we don't like to be on the bleeding edge. We prefer to be with providers that have been stable and around for a long period of time.

What other advice do I have?

This solution is efficient in more than one way. Not only is it high performing, but it is also more compact and fits better in our storage arrays than equipment from other storage providers. This helps out with space in the data center.

We have experienced an increase in performance of ten to fifteen percent.

This product has proven itself to be very reliable and we're looking forward to where it's going to take us in the future. Everything that they've told us it's going to do, it has done and exceeded.

The biggest lesson that I have learned is not to run at any solution that is already out there. Really dive into what it is that you need. Find out what your baseline is, and have a number in mind from a cost perspective. Then take a look at what your priorities are. Is it cost, or uptime, or perhaps having a reliable solution? Always define what your parameters are.

My advice to anybody considering a solution such as this is to always do your research. Look at everything, including peer evaluations, and always take your time. I have met a lot of people that try to rush into a solution and then end up finding stuff that they didn't think they needed. So, as much as possible, take your time and do your studies.

I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.
