What is our primary use case?
Oracle VM VirtualBox is used to test applications and operating systems.
It should be for everyday use because when I want to test any operating system or servers that need to be tested, I test them on Oracle VM VirtualBox.
I am not sure about extensive usage as I did not scale that much. I use it only for my home labs, so I did not need to scale significantly.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature is the seamlessness. When I install a Linux operating system, I can use Windows applications through Oracle VM VirtualBox seamlessly.
There are many applications that work only on Windows. For desktop testing purposes, I used Oracle VM VirtualBox, and it works fine.
The guest OS compatibility was tremendous because I used Oracle VM VirtualBox on Linux and ran Windows applications on top of that, working seamlessly.
What needs improvement?
If there were more API access so that I could run it headlessly, similar to Proxmox where I can use API, it would be useful. Having some kind of API to maintain Oracle VM VirtualBox would be beneficial.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Oracle VM VirtualBox for more than 17 years.
What was my experience with deployment of the solution?
There were no difficulties with deployment.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It was smooth and easy because it was meant just for development, nothing else. For personal use, it was smooth and easy.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
For home lab use and for those who do tests on home labs, it is scalable.
I did not need to scale significantly.
How are customer service and support?
Their forum and documentation is more than enough for technical support.
I have not contacted them for any issues.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I am not on the latest update currently.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup took just a couple of minutes.
What about the implementation team?
Because it is easy to use and open source, it is free to use for any lab environment.
It is totally open source and free, so we do not have to pay anything.
What was our ROI?
It should be rated more than seven or eight because I tested only in my home environment. I did not perform any long-term stress tests, just for a couple of hours or days on every application. After testing, I destroy the VM and run new tests.
For these couple of days of usage, I would rate it seven to eight out of ten.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Maintenance is not necessary because I did not use it for heavy loads.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
I am using Proxmox, not Oracle VM VirtualBox in my organization.
For personal use I use other solutions, but for my company I use Proxmox.
What other advice do I have?
I would recommend Oracle VM VirtualBox to others.
I have not used it for AI. I use separate VMs and separate servers.
I would need to check the version as I am away from my PC currently.
Overall, I would rate Oracle VM VirtualBox eight out of ten for personal use.
