Data masking and virtualization have simplified daily protection of sensitive data for multiple teams
Pros and Cons
    • "In terms of challenges with Perforce Delphix, it would be really helpful if the tool provides a chance to use some transformation features, such as those in Informatica; for instance, if a column contains multi-value data, it would be helpful to separate the data."

What is our primary use case?

My use case for Perforce Delphix will mostly be data masking, and sometimes it will be data virtualization as well.

For data masking, I use Perforce Delphix to import the metadata in the Delphix data masking tool by importing database metadata into Perforce Delphix, and I start with the profiling and preview it with the customer. Then I mask the data and review it. Regarding data virtualization, I use Perforce Delphix to mask a set of databases; for example, if I am masking the production data on the fly, I mask a set of data and virtualize it so all teams can use the same data again.

In my project, I rely mostly on the data masking feature of Perforce Delphix since we have many teams using production data and we mask production data daily. We have more databases as well, which provides enough use cases to mask data.

    What is most valuable?

Perforce Delphix offers several best features, including data profiling, data masking, data subsetting, and even data virtualization.

Perforce Delphix has positively impacted my organization; initially, before I joined the project, the team used some SQL queries to mask data, which involved mainframe masking. After we took over the project, we proposed multiple tools for TDM, particularly for masking, and Perforce Delphix was shortlisted due to its straightforward data masking process. The organization chose Perforce Delphix for masking because of its direct masking capabilities, which mostly involve in-place masking.

After implementing masking using Perforce Delphix, we ensured that all sensitive elements were masked before placing them into QA and Int environments, addressing the issues raised by the client regarding compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, and PCI.

    What needs improvement?

In terms of challenges with Perforce Delphix, it would be really helpful if the tool provides a chance to use some transformation features, such as those in Informatica; for instance, if a column contains multi-value data, it would be helpful to separate the data. For example, if a column contains both first name and last name in a single data entry, it would be beneficial to divide it.

To improve Perforce Delphix, it would be helpful if job log details were presented, indicating errors more specifically instead of providing all logs on the same page, and also if it specified the source and target rows more clearly when performing on-the-fly masking.

For how long have I used the solution?

Perforce Delphix is stable; I have been using it for the past year in my current project without issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

In terms of scalability, Perforce Delphix has handled multiple requests effectively, and it is performing well.

How are customer service and support?

The customer support from Perforce Delphix partners has been satisfactory; I get enough support when facing any issues.

I would rate the customer support a seven out of ten.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Previously, I have used multiple TDM tools such as Informatica, Delphix, GenRocket, and even now I am learning Datapro; my choice to learn Perforce Delphix was based on project requirements that demanded it.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Before choosing Perforce Delphix, we evaluated several options including Informatica and other tools, but considering support and cost, the business decided to go with Perforce Delphix.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Perforce Delphix an eight out of ten.

I chose the number eight because, even though there are some drawbacks and improvements needed, Perforce Delphix has helped me mask data and do profiling using the tool itself. It greatly aids me in data masking and data virtualization compared to other tools, enabling me to virtualize data without needing to mask the same production data repeatedly; I can mask it once, store it virtually, and then use it in QA or Int environments when required.

My advice for others looking into using Perforce Delphix would be that if you need masking along with virtualization, it is a good choice. However, if you need to generate synthetic data along with data masking, other tools such as Informatica ILM, TDM, PowerCenter, Dataprof, or GenRocket might be better suited since Perforce Delphix does not support synthetic data generation. I rate this product an eight out of ten overall.

Handles large volumes of data with ease, but the self-service portal must be more user-friendly
    Pros and Cons
    • "The product is efficient in handling large volumes of data."
    • "The solution’s self-service portal must be more interactive and user-friendly."

What is our primary use case?

We use the tool to create scenarios for test data. We have different third-party databases that have huge volumes of data.

How has it helped my organization?

The product helps us deal with RDBMS or MongoDB, where we have a large volume of data. It is a valuable product.

    What is most valuable?

The product is efficient in handling large volumes of data.

    What needs improvement?

The solution’s self-service portal must be more interactive and user-friendly. It must give more capabilities to the user. Virtual database capabilities should be added to future releases.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution since 2018. I am using the latest version of the solution.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The tool’s stability is fine. We could export large volumes of data. I rate the stability an eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I rate the tool’s scalability a seven out of ten.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We also use Broadcom Test Data Manager. Delphix has capabilities that are similar to Broadcom Test Data Manager.

    How was the initial setup?

    The deployment was easy.

    What was our ROI?

We do not see much ROI on the tool because we also use Broadcom Test Data Manager. However, I like how Delphix handles large volumes of data.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The product is a little bit expensive. It is almost similar to Broadcom Test Data Manager.

What other advice do I have?

My advice depends on an organization’s needs. If an organization has a large volume of data, Delphix is a good choice. It is robust and very efficient with large volumes of data and different kinds of databases. If someone is looking for a one-stop solution with all features and capabilities, they must consider a different tool. Overall, I rate the product a six or seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

    On-premises

Possess good ability to handle structured and unstructured data
    Pros and Cons
    • "The performance offered by the product, its price, and its ability to handle structured and unstructured data were good when compared to the other products in the market."
    • "When it comes to unstructured and structured data, if Delphix can comply with the requirements for most of the structured data, it would be good, especially if it can include the data scanning part."

What is our primary use case?

My company predominantly uses Delphix because, for large data masking in terabytes, we need the kind of engine where it can play very well on an NMVe hard disk. My company also needs a master-slave architecture, like the one offered under big data or Hadoop's framework. Speed and the performance the tool offers are paramount to my company. When I looked at the topological architecture of how Informatica does the data masking, I saw that it is slightly different from the big data framework.

    What needs improvement?

When it comes to unstructured and structured data, if Delphix can comply with the requirements for most of the structured data, it would be good, especially if it can include the data scanning part. The tool is useful for data masking. If I have a repository or if I give the repository to the tool, and if it scans all the data to figure out if there is any kind of PII/NPI data, I think it will make the tool full and complete.

For how long have I used the solution?

    I have experience with Delphix.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability-wise, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

My company has around 500 users of the tool.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability-wise, I rate the solution an eight and a half out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

I rate the technical support a seven out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

My company tried various other products during one of the PoC phases before finalizing Delphix for large-scale usage.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

My company purchased Delphix since it met our budgetary requirements. The product is not cheap, but I can say that it is a good product for the functionalities it provides. I rate the product price seven to eight on a scale of one to ten, where one is the low price, and ten is the high price.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

The performance offered by the product, its price, and its ability to handle structured and unstructured data were good when compared to the other products in the market.

What other advice do I have?

Delphix is actually meant for data masking. Speaking about how my company uses the tool for DevOps workflows, I would say that my company has a Jenkins pipeline, and we write all the scripts, after which the onboarding is completed in Delphix. In our company, we have a service process between the producers and the consumers. Once the onboarding is done, all the rules and data masking are taken care of, which is like a one-time deal. Unless the data structure changes, my company used to go to Collibra and get the schema to ensure that the requested fields were there in the schema, after which we used to read the data specific to that catalog and then mask it. The script gets triggered by Jenkins.

I have no doubts about how the solution provides and ensures data compliance and security. My company has been using Delphix for quite some time now. Initially, my company didn't have to deal with any big data. After my company had a requirement to deal with the big data in relation to its migration to the cloud, we had tons and tons of data coming in, owing to which we had to deploy the big data kind of a cluster like Delphix. My company has unstructured, structured, and some semi-structured data as well to do the masking, but we are able to deal with only a few such data and not with all of it. I have no problems with relational databases. In semi-structured data, I do have problems, but not with all of them, including data in Word and PDFs.

Delphix has been the most valuable in improving data operations, predominantly in the area of data masking from higher to lower.

Delphix's virtual data infrastructure has impacted our company's data management processes really well, especially whenever we want to deal with the area of testing in data science and wherever we need to write the models while taking data from a higher environment to the lower environment, maintaining the data masking posture, following the industry regulations and work in compliance with the security guidelines, which helped us tremendously, to fit the tool into our architecture framework.

My company has an agreement with Delphix to take care of the maintenance of the product. One person from my company will take care of the maintenance.

I recommend the product to other people who want to use it.

I rate the tool an eight out of ten.

It can do data masking in any format. Not many solutions can do that.
    Pros and Cons
    • "Delphix can do data masking in any format. Not many solutions can do that."
    • "Delphix support is second to none."
    • "Delphix needs better partnerships from a customer perspective. It's how they sell it, not what they're selling."

What is our primary use case?

I never used Delphix, but I was a salesperson for the company. Generally, it's used for data masking and virtualization.

    What is most valuable?

Delphix can do data masking in any format. Not many solutions can do that.

    What needs improvement?

Delphix needs better partnerships from a customer perspective. It's how they sell it, not what they're selling.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    Delphix is extremely stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There were some challenges in terms of scalability, but maybe they have tweaked the product since I left six months ago. It was primarily an issue with data virtualization, not the masking. The guys who built the masking solution are still there at the company.

How are customer service and support?

Delphix support is second to none. Most of those guys have been around for 10 or 12 years.

    How was the initial setup?

The deployment depends on the use case. For example, an Oracle EC2 database might be straightforward, but integrating Delphix with MongoDB Atlas would be more challenging. On average, you could stand up a POC within a week.

You need half an FTE for virtualization and half an FTE for masking. You want to keep those separate, but it would equal one full-time employee for a small company. After deployment, you have to stay up to date on the release, just like any other software package.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price varies, but they had a liberal discount program. They charge by the terabyte of data, so it depends on the amount you have. I believe a terabyte of data was $36,000 for the platform, and 10 terabytes would be $360,000. However, you could negotiate a better discount as you scale up.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Delphix eight out of 10. There are lots of other cloud-native masking that are partnered with AWS, Azure, and GCP. I believe Delphix began a partnership with Dell recently. I'm not sure where that's going, but it may help Delphix climb the ladder and become more of a cloud product.

Right now, cloud-native solutions like Datadog and others that are moving up on Gartner's are capturing that business. Delphix hasn't entered the fray yet, and I don't know why. I think it's partially the leadership and marketing.

Before implementing Delphix, you should ensure that it works within the cloud environment in your use case. Typically, you need to do a proof of conept for two or three weeks to test it out on your strategic use case.

User-friendly, simple to implement, and has good documentation
    Pros and Cons
    • "It's really easy to install."
    • "As partners, we find it's very good for business, not just for the IT area, and the benefits are really good for the business of the company in general."
    • "As a commercial model, it's very good. However, maybe it would be nice for Delphix to integrate with some other platforms."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for TDM and also for recovery.

Some clients are masking the data and some leads. Some are evaluating analytics for moving to the cloud. Also, the DevOps solution generated with Delphix is used quite often.

    What is most valuable?

    It's user-friendly. It's really easy to install.

Delphix as a company has a lot of legal information that is very helpful for customers.

We have a big customer in Mexico that has been working with Delphix for 40 years, and in all those years, we have not had the request to make a support ticket for Delphix.

As partners, we find it's very good for business, not just for the IT area. The benefits are really good for the business of the company in general.

    What needs improvement?

As a commercial model, it's very good. However, maybe it would be nice for Delphix to integrate with some other platforms.

For how long have I used the solution?

I’ve been using the solution for about six years.

How are customer service and support?

    Technical support has been excellent.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Positive

    How was the initial setup?

It is quite simple to set up. There’s lots of documentation as well. It’s al very easy and not at all difficult.

We only ned to use one engineer in order to implement the solution. You don’t ned a lot of personnel to get it up and running.

What other advice do I have?

I am a Delphix distributor. I'm a partner of Delphix.

We tend to use the most up-to-date version of the solution.

I would advise potential new users to take care and have good architecture set up for the platform.

I’d rate the product ten out of ten. It’s an excellent solution.

Its data distribution capabilities are powerful
    Pros and Cons
    • "Delphix's data distribution is powerful. It's easy to distribute data with this solution. The main advantage of Delphix is that it generates copies of data."
    • "Delphix's data distribution is powerful."
    • "Delphix is quite expensive."

What is our primary use case?

Delphix is used to distribute confidential data to customers.

    What is most valuable?

Delphix's data distribution is powerful. It's easy to distribute data with this solution. The main advantage of Delphix is that it generates copies of data.

    What needs improvement?

I don't personally use Delphix. I use it in the context of jobs for my customers. I have provided feedback to Delphix to let them know what my current customers need and ways to improve the product. However, it's not something I can say more about because this is confidential.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Delphix for five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    Delphix's stability is excellent.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Thousands of people are working with Delphix at our company. It's around 2,000 or 3,000 people.

How are customer service and support?

I rate Delphix support eight out of 10. They are relatively responsive. Sometimes they don't respond as quickly as we need, but it's okay.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Delphix is the first product of its kind we have implemented. We compared with Nutanix but decided on Delphix.

    How was the initial setup?

It's not so easy to set up Delphix, but it's doable. It took around five or six months to deploy.

    What about the implementation team?

We didn't need outside consultants to deploy Delphix. We have enough in-house expertise to deploy it ourselves.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Delphix is quite expensive. At the same time, you'll get a good return on investment if you implement it effectively and distribute it widely.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Delphix eight out of 10. I advise potential users to understand the tool's technical capabilities to how to implement it within your company's internal security framework. You need to understand the solution and how to adapt it according to your constraints. This is the biggest challenge.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

    Public Cloud

Provides a huge reduction in storage requirements; ability to create environments from snapshots
    Pros and Cons
    • "The most valuable feature is VDB provisioning."
    • "Without a doubt, the most valuable feature of Delphix is VDB provisioning, which has the ability to provision virtual databases and provide us with a huge reduction in storage requirements, enabling us to provision databases on demand at a fraction of the storage requirement that we would have needed without it."
    • "Could be improved with richer reporting capabilities."
    • "I think that the reporting side is the biggest area which needs improvement and could do with a bit of a refresher."

What is our primary use case?

My team manages Delphix on site. We are customers and resellers of Delphix.

    What is most valuable?

Without a doubt, the most valuable feature of Delphix is VDB provisioning. That feature has the ability to provision virtual databases and provide us with a huge reduction in storage requirements. In fact, it enables us to provision databases on demand at a fraction of the storage requirement that we would have needed without it.

Then there's the feature that enables us to rewind and create environments from snapshots of other environments and parent-child relationships. In general, we found everything around VDB provisioning and virtual databases to be exceptionally awesome. In my 20 years as an Oracle VBA, it's changed the landscape drastically.

    What needs improvement?

I'd like to see some improvement on the reporting side, but we haven't had the opportunity to delve into that right now because we're in transition to a new company structure. We've been using mission control, the reporting aspects, and I would appreciate having more when it comes to rich reporting capabilities. On the whole, I think that the reporting side is the biggest area which needs improvement and could do with a bit of a refresher. That said, I'm on the management level and have only worked with reporting when issues arise whereas those who work with it on a day-to-day basis, may have other features they'd like to see.

We've had some discussions with Delphix regarding the ability to do cross-platform migrations, something we are very interested in. If you have Delphix on an AIX or Spark machine with a large endian database architecture and you want to run your CDBs on a small architecture or vice versa, it should be possible to do a conversion. That's currently not the case. Other than that, there's not much more they could improve.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using Delphix for close to five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable, everything runs well.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We haven't had much need for scalability, no requirements since inception. When we did have some discussions regarding scaling Delphix, I think it was quite evident that it would be easy to do due to its flexibility.

How are customer service and technical support?

I believe that Delphix's support team is one of the best around. They are helpful and they don't walk away from a problem. We've had instances where other vendors such as VMware have blamed Delphix for certain issues and when Delphix assisted us we eventually found out that it was actually errors outside Delphix that were causing the issues. Their support is helpful because they guide you through the upgrades, I think it's probably the best out there right now.

I rate this solution a nine out of 10.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

From a GUI perspective, I haven't worked with anything like Delphix before and haven't seen anything yet that is as good as Delphix. I think a couple of other products on the table might be IBM InfoSphere and Oracle Snap Clone, but there's no guarantee that we'll be going with those because we're still waiting for confirmation on whether those technologies can run against our IBM Z line architecture.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was quite easy. Implementation staff were not required to undergo any training. We were closely assisted by the reseller who helped with the setups, and that process was easy. We've been managing that environment ever since and whenever we encounter issues we have been very well accommodated by the vendor support team.

    What about the implementation team?

For the implementation, we received help from the reseller and it was quite easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I think the price is reasonable but we haven't truly been able to compare Delphix with similar solutions and their costing, so I can't say for certain whether it's cheap in comparison. I'm not too in touch with the actual costing because it's not my area but when it comes to support, I believe we pay roughly 5 million South African Rand annually. If I look at cost savings alone, I reckon we are saving something close to eight petabytes worth of storage with Delphix. I see that as a game changer.

What other advice do I have?

I haven't been exposed to anything else out there that's similar, but from the reading that I've done it seems that a lot of people have found Delphix offers quite a bit. At the end of the day, I think it's awesome technology. We have people managing it now that are not even experienced or certified for Oracle resources. It's quite an easy technology to implement and then maintain, and using it is also quite easy.

I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.

Excellent working environment, with continuous updates and affordable pricing
    Pros and Cons
    • "The most valuable aspect is the product is easy to manage, with a good dashboard. We can easily configure it on the front end and back end."
    • "One thing I would like to see improved is the unusual error messages we receive and some slowness we have while we are updating."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case is synching our continuous updates from the production to our local environment. We regularly create snapshots and we refresh and clone our environment as per our plan, and our schedules.

    What is most valuable?

The most valuable aspect is the product is easy to manage, with a good dashboard. We can easily configure it on the front end and back end.

    What needs improvement?

One thing I would like to see improved is the unusual error messages we receive and some slowness we have while we are updating. I would also like to see better integration with the AWS environment and other solutions.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Delphix for the past four to five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Delphix currently is providing excellent stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Delphix is scalable at the moment we have fifty percent capacity currently using the solution on an everyday basis.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward and does not require much effort.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I would say the price is a little high but affordable for our needs.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Delphix an eight out of ten.

    Affordable solution but not agentless
    Pros and Cons
    • "Delphix's technical support is fairly knowledgeable."

    Delphix isn't very scalable.

Easy to set up and supports creating virtual databases
    Pros and Cons
    • "The most valuable feature is creating virtual databases."
    • "Our primary use case is cloning databases, and we can complete this process in minutes."
    • "This product should be extended and made to be a more comprehensive storage solution."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case is cloning databases. We can complete this process in minutes.

    What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is creating virtual databases.

As much as I have used it, I'm fine with the interface.

    What needs improvement?

This product should be extended and made to be a more comprehensive storage solution. Everything can be stored on the platform but it is mostly used for the database and database virtualization. If they put everything on the storage then they would not need separate storage for other applications.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Delphix for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have had some issues, but they have always been resolved.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable, as for as the other database storage is concerned. We have a backup and restore department who uses this product, and we might be 10 people.

    How was the initial setup?

    The initial setup was fine.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, this is a good product and I can recommend it, but there is always room for improvement.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

    Hybrid Cloud
