An affordable tool to monitor routers and access points
Pros and Cons
  • "The product's initial setup phase was straightforward."
  • "As there are no agents in Portnox Clear, the customers of the product cannot download any agents on their devices, making them unsure if the product offers proper security."

What is our primary use case?

I work at an IT firm where a couple of our end customers either use the product or want to onboard it in their environment. As a process engineer, I have to take care of certain presentations and discuss the deployment process with our company's customers.

Some of our company's customers who use Portnox CORE's on-premises version found it to not be suitable for their usage or use cases. Later on, my company started to push Portnox Clear over Portnox CORE. Portnox Clear is a cloud-based solution, so our company's customers need not worry about deployment and other related areas regarding the product. Based on my own experience, I always encourage people to opt for Portnox Clear so that they don't have to worry about deployment and installation areas.

One of our company's customers has an electricity distribution business with a lot of branches across the country, because of which they need to deal with a lot of connected devices. For our company's customer who deals in the electricity distribution business, I monitor routers and access points across the country, ensuring that no unauthorized sources are connected to them while ensuring the configuration and features of the product are accurate and up to date.

How has it helped my organization?

For our company's customers, cost is a key factor since they prefer to choose a solution that is affordable. From a cost perspective, affordability is one of the criteria that Portnox Clear is able to fulfill for our company's customers. The licensing part of the solution is not tied to a contract that a user can't leave or opt out of, unlike some of the other solutions that our company sells, where a customer has to sign a five-year contract, and later, even if you don't like the service, you can't leave the product. Portnox Clear gives our company's customers the flexibility to evaluate Portnox's services at any point in time. If a user does not want to continue with Portnox Clear, then it is fine, and they can move to some other solution. With Portnox Clear, its users are not tied to your contract, which states that they are tied with Portnox for five years, even if you don't like the solution, meaning there can be a lot of customizations in the contract. That flexibility offered by the solution is very important for our company's customers.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features of Portnox Clear stem from the fact that it is seamless and easy to work with, as it is not a complicated product. A user does not need to be an expert to work with Portnox Clear.

The product is also very easy to integrate with other security solutions, like firewall products, or if users have any other networks in their environment. For security, users can easily integrate Portnox Clear with other solutions, and it works just fine. In general, the integration capabilities of Portnox Clear are great. The user experience offered by the product is not bad. For me, the aforementioned points are very important when it comes to Portnox Clear.

What needs improvement?

A lot of our company's customers who use Portnox Clear feel that since it is an agentless solution, it is not well-equipped enough to cover all the devices in their environment. Sometimes, our company has to explain things to our customers and spend extra time trying to convince them that there are no problems with the solution. I don't know if Portnox can introduce agents for Clear or come up with some other values that would make selling the product easier for our company while ensuring that the customers are more open to receiving Portnox Clear in their environment. As there are no agents in Portnox Clear, the customers of the product cannot download any agents on their devices, making them unsure if the product offers proper security. The aforementioned area can be considered for improvement in the solution.

The features that are offered by the product are great. If there is progress in security concerns, then Portnox Clear might have to add new features. The features that the product provides are the standard ones that are in line with the other network assistant tools or solutions in the market.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have experience with Portnox Clear for a year. I work at an IT firm in Nigeria that resells Portnox Clear to deal with network access control. My organization also serves as a reseller for some other products in the market.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

My company has faced some complaints via calls from our customers regarding the stability of Portnox CORE's on-premises version, but for Portnox Clear, we have not faced any such issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Portnox Clear is a cloud-based product, making it one of its most important features as such products have the ability to offer scalability to the product's users in seconds. With just a request to Portnox for more licenses and with good support, the product's scalability features can be used. In general, Portnox Clear is a very scalable solution.

How are customer service and support?

I have a colleague in my company who works as a process engineer and contacts Portnox's technical support team for help and to take care of the implementation of the product. I think that the only issue our company faces is when we try to contact Portnox's technical support team to raise a ticket. Raising a ticket and the response time are difficult areas to manage when it comes to Portnox's technical support team. I don't have a clear idea of how Portnox's technical support team functions and what they do.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have experience with Portnox CORE's on-premises version.

My company also sells products from Forescout, which is a solution for network access control. When it comes to the customers, the majority are concerned with the costs and believe that all solutions meant for network access control have similar features. For my company, it is hard to make the customers understand the value proposition of each solution. The major determinant that forces customers to opt for a product is generally the cost of the solution and that particular point in time. If my company suggests Foreccout to our customers, then they say that it is expensive, after which they ask us to provide them with cheaper products, like Portnox.

How was the initial setup?

The product's initial setup phase was straightforward.

Portnox manages the deployment, so our company doesn't have to do any deployments. Our company only oversees the deployment process carried out by Portnox to make sure that our customers are happy. My company's job is to sell the solution, provide the presentations to customers, and ensure that our end customers like the solution. Our company does not get involved in deployment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The cost of Portnox Clear is reasonable. Portnox should get customers to reach out to Portnox Clear in the Nigerian market by offering the product at competitive prices. Portnox can also opt for the strategies used by Check Point to see its solution. If somebody wants to buy a product that is a competitor of Check Point, then the products from Check Point are made available at a competitive price, which may make the product look very cheap in terms of price, but I don't know if Portnox opts for such strategies or not. If someone who wants to buy Portnox feels that the price is an issue, then the product should be offered to such customers at a very competitive price, which is better than the ones offered by rivals or competitors.

What other advice do I have?

As far as I know, I don't think that maintenance is required for Portnox Clear, as it is a solution that gets updated from time to time. If there is a maintenance requirement, it may lead to the product having some downtime, but I am not aware or sure if it will happen the way I think.

I recommend people use Portnox Clear as it is a cloud-based product. Apart from the value users get from the solution in the area of network access control, users also get value from its in-built cloud, making it a very scalable tool that is very easy to manage from any location. You just need to log in to the portal and then carry out whatever activity you want to carry out. I want others to buy Portnox Clear, as it is a cloud-based solution, making it a tool that is very easy to implement, support, and deploy.

If I don't consider the issue with the solution around the area of agents, then I can say that it is a good solution, but because it is an agentless product, my company needs to provide a lot of explanation to ensure the conversion of prospects into customers. Portnox Clear is a very solid solution to work with, especially when considering the ease of deployment it offers.

I rate the overall product an eight out of ten.

Pros and Cons
  • "The product is a valuable solution within zero-trust architecture, enhancing network security and visibility."
  • "It would be good to integrate Portnox CORE with CLEAR."

What is our primary use case?

We use the product for network access control. It is mainly for wired environments and WiFi access.

What needs improvement?

It would be good to integrate Portnox CORE with CLEAR.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Portnox CORE is very scalable. One Portnox server can support 10,000 endpoints.

How are customer service and support?

We get good support from the technical team. They are responsive.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

The tool's deployment is simple and doesn't bother users. Installation doesn't create any problems, and users can work freely. The installation for 500-1000 endpoints can be completed in three days. It can be done by one resource. However, having a team of three resources for the installation is good. The product's maintenance is also easy and can be done with the help of one resource.

What was our ROI?

The tool's ROI is related to security. It provides better network visibility and improved security by controlling access to unauthorized devices.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Portnox CORE's pricing is adequate and cheaper compared to other complex solutions. Its licensing costs are yearly and include support. Cost is calculated per device.

What other advice do I have?

Our Serbian clients are enterprise businesses. We have small business clients from the US. The product is a valuable solution within zero-trust architecture, enhancing network security and visibility. I rate it a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Good network access control with a very easy setup
Pros and Cons
  • "The technical support is top-notch."
  • "The price could be better."

What is our primary use case?

It is good for network access control.

How has it helped my organization?

It can determine security access and the device layer to ensure authentication, validation and verification. The device tries to connect based on certain conditions and rules before communication occurs.

What is most valuable?

The NAS view that gives visual representation of the state of affairs of the appliances and ports

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution for about three years, and it is deployed both on cloud and on-premises.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable. We have one client who works with Portnox CORE.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support is top-notch and great.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

It was very easy to set up and took just a couple of minutes to deploy.

What about the implementation team?

We are the vendor who implemented.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We wouldn't mind a price change because of our region's unpredictable nature of exchange rates. For example, a product that's $1 would frequently change in our local currency, as our local currency keeps rising to factors of differential of 10 every few days. Therefore, the price could be better.

The licensing is based on the band. So depending on the quantity bands, it can be low or high, but on average, it's less than $10 or $20 per unit.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution to others.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

It could be a little cheaper.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Portnox CORE for the past two years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I would rate the scalability 10 out of 10.

Great reporting capabilities and excellent compatibility with most network devices
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution has a valuable reporting feature."
  • "From a resource perspective, the OEM can do better in terms of resource utilization."

What is our primary use case?

Our aim is to ensure compliance, so we use this solution for network access control, where we define the threshold for endpoint compliance. This extends to the Wireless LAN, which ensures that whatever compliance structure has been defined is maintained. We have many users working remotely, so we use Portnox to provide a high level of assurance. I'm an information security officer and we are customers of Portnox.

How has it helped my organization?

Our company is big on BYOD policies where we allow users to bring their own system back onto the network. Portnox enables us to ensure that all the systems on our network are actually managed systems. It provides us with a high level of assurance.

What is most valuable?

I think the reporting feature is valuable because it provides a good level of insight. Even before clicking on the mouse, we can see what the contents are with the endpoint. CLEAR is one of the best of its kind on the market with respect to compatibility. It works perfectly well with most network devices and endpoints. The security controls are easy to configure, and I like the new interface for CLEAR which is cool. Portnox has been around for a while and I think they've learned a lot that has enabled significant improvement.

What needs improvement?

Although I like the reporting, we're getting a degree of false positives which is possibly connected to the implementation. We have a local partner and we depend on their skills and knowledge and those of our in-house staff to be able to support the tool. From a resource perspective, I think the OEM can do better in terms of resource utilization. We have a large environment that extends to remote workers, and we've had instances where we've had to reboot services.

Portnox has done a lot around the cloud, and I'm hoping that the next level of improvement will be to provide the capability for network access control for mobile devices, or device management as the case may be.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable, we have over 1,000 users and a couple of people who help out with maintenance and support as part of their work. We'll be expanding use in the future.

How are customer service and support?

The support could be improved with better local services. Even though we have access to the Portnox support portal, it's the local partner that we have to work with. It's been okay but there is room for improvement, perhaps the company could make contact with their end users instead of depending on the local partner; we would appreciate that.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

The only other solution we have used is Portnox CORE, the on-premise version, which was the first network access control tool that we adopted. We still maintain some licenses with CORE, but we've now procured additional licenses for CLEAR because of the increased need for remote work.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was not as straightforward as we'd have liked but with the right skills and support, we were able to get it sorted. Unfortunately, the support we had could have been better but we are now enjoying the tool. We did some prep beforehand and the deployment was carried out over a weekend.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We pay an annual license fee. In addition, we pay for professional services and local support.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We looked at Check Point initially for remote VPN connectivity, and also for firewalls and then for network access control, but I think we went with Portnox because of our previous experience with them.

What other advice do I have?

I think while Portnox provides wonderful technology, the support and maintenance agreements are problematic. In particular, when they're dealing with a local partner. Partners really need to be skilled and knowledgeable.

I rate this solution eight out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Hybrid Cloud

Easy to set up and good for security but offers a slow response time
Pros and Cons
  • "It's a stable product."
  • "One of the things for the on-premise is that sometimes you click on it and it takes a while for it to respond."

What is our primary use case?

We use it more on our endpoint solutions, and endpoint devices, to secure our endpoint devices, including the computers, CCTV cameras, et cetera. We use it just to add a level of security to our endpoints.

What is most valuable?

One of the things that I like about Portnox is the fact that in Portnox you are able to manage your network devices, like your switches or routers, using that instead of logging into the console of, say, a switch or a router. You can see the GUI of development from Portnox. It shows a lot of whatever activities you want to do just when you enable your ports. You can work offline as well.

The initial setup is simple.

It's a stable product.

The scalability is good.

It's good for security. I once saw a machine accessing us that wasn't on our domain, and I immediately just dispatched the necessary policy.

What needs improvement?

Portnox has actually moved to the cloud. We do not utilize the cloud environment much where I work, however, moving there is the plan. We are trying to work on that. It may end up being faster. One of the things for the on-premise is that sometimes you click on it and it takes a while for it to respond. It doesn't respond immediately. The response time for the application is slow. While it works very well, it would be ideal if it responded more readily.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using the solution for one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's a stable solution. We have been using it for a year now and I've never had any issue with it. We just got it licensed and started using it.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable.

We have seven people using the solution.

How are customer service and support?

I have not reached out to support lately. We have a support vendor that we contact to support it. I have contacted the technical support vendor that supports us on Portnox. We are satisfied with them.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have used Cisco ISE before I came to this company. It is complex compared to Portnox. Portnox is easy to use.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy. I've actually used other solutions, however, I found Portnox to be easier.

That said, I was not on the team that managed the initial deployment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is inexpensive compared to what I have used before.

What other advice do I have?

We are a customer.

We are using the latest version of the solution.

I'd recommend others to use it. It's easier to use and has this GUI that can give you more visibility to all you are doing on the device, and also it gives you a more analytic view of the people that are trying to connect. You see the Mac address of the device and everything.

I'd rate the solution seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Provides good visibility, integrates well, and is agentless
Pros and Cons
  • "The most important feature is that this solution is agentless. So, you don't have to install any agents on endpoints."
  • "The integration between Portnox CORE and Portnox CLEAR can be better. These are two different systems, and there is no unique console for both devices. Portnox CORE is agentless, whereas Portnox CLEAR is not agentless."

How has it helped my organization?

We did a proof of concept for some customers, and it was really easy to install. It was done during production. They were satisfied because it is agentless, and they didn't have to bother or interrupt other users.

What is most valuable?

The most important feature is that this solution is agentless. So, you don't have to install any agents on endpoints.

Its installation is relatively easy and straightforward. It can be done without disrupting the end-users.

The end-users love the visibility. They get insights into the devices or endpoint devices that are on their work.

What needs improvement?

The integration between Portnox CORE and Portnox CLEAR can be better. These are two different systems, and there is no unique console for both devices. Portnox CORE is agentless, whereas Portnox CLEAR is not agentless.

Its license policy can be a bit improved. There is no perpetual license.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been working with Portnox CORE for two and a half years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is very scalable. One virtual machine or virtual server can cover about 10,000 endpoints, which is enough for Serbia.

How are customer service and support?

We did interact with them. It was direct support. They were very good. They were very fast, dependable, and available. We got a very fast response.

How was the initial setup?

It is simple.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The users are not very happy with the new licensing option where there is only a subscription license. There is no perpetual license.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I didn't compare it recently, but I know that we were comparing it about two years ago with other solutions, such as Forescout. This was the only solution that had on-premise and cloud versions. Portnox is agentless, but I don't know if other solutions are also agentless. I know that Cisco is not agentless, and that's an advantage that Portnox has over Cisco.

Portnox also has an integration with Palo Alto Networks WildFire. When there is a raised level of activity of malware on Palo Alto Networks WildFire, it triggers something on Portnox. Its integration with other solutions was also a strong point.

What other advice do I have?

We are very satisfied with this solution. We like it because it is agentless.

I would rate it a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Simple to install, and technical support is good, but the scalability could be improved
Pros and Cons
  • "I like the fact that you can take your device anywhere and still have that visibility from anywhere because it's agent-based."
  • "I believe there is a lot of room for improvement in terms of integration."

What is our primary use case?

I work with a distributor. We Portnox, and NAC solutions.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features of this solution are the agent features.

I like the fact that you can take your device anywhere and still have that visibility from anywhere because it's agent-based.

What needs improvement?

I believe there is a lot of room for improvement in terms of integration. For example, integration with specific devices such as Huawei and CORE. The integration with third-party vendors could improve.

The scalability could be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I was introduced to Portnox Clear in 2020, two years ago.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I believe that it is stable. That would be based on the customer's experience. We provide solutions to our customers, we are not using them. Stability is also dependent on the configuration, and how it is configured.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

In terms of scalability, there is room for improvement.

Scalability issues have emerged with other vendors, as well as with multiple branches.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is great. I don't have any issues with the technical support of Portnox Clear.

I would rate the technical support a five out of five.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We also work with Portnox CORE.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is pretty straightforward. I would rate the installation a four or five out of five.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Compared with other solutions, the pricing is a major pro.

I would rate their pricing a five out of five.

Pricing is quite reasonable.

What other advice do I have?

If you want scalability and have many different vendors in your environment, you must first ensure that they are compatible with those devices. However, if you're looking for pricing, they're quite reasonable when compared to other vendors. In addition, installation is less complicated when compared to other vendors.

I would rate Portnox Clear a seven out of ten.
