What is our primary use case?

I mainly use Portnox to instantly isolate a compromised or non-compliant endpoint from the rest of the network the moment a threat or vulnerability is detected.

Portnox's main use case is for authentication, posture assessment, enforcement, and segmentation, using a cloud-native identity provider such as Azure AD or Entra ID to verify that the person attempting to log in is actually an active employee with the right credentials or digital certifications. It functions as a security verification tool that we use.

A recent and highly impacted scenario that stands out occurred during a critical availability window when a new zero-day operating system vulnerability was actively being exploited across the industry. As I work in healthcare IT infrastructure, maintaining zero trust network integrity is paramount because a single compromised endpoint can act as a lateral entry point to critical patient care applications or medical databases. We had a corporate laptop belonging to an off-shift employee that missed the mandatory security patch cycle via our MDM tool, Intune. The user attempted to log into the corporate network via VPN from home while the device was still out of compliance. As soon as the connection request hit our gateway, Portnox performed an automated posture assessment rather than simply checking if the user's active credentials were correct. Portnox verified the machine's configuration against our updated compliance policies, instantly flagging it as missing critical security patches, having an altered local firewall configuration, and an out-of-date endpoint security agent.

Once Portnox flagged the device as non-compliant and automatically moved it into isolated quarantine, our team initiated a coordinated response between incident management, the security operational centers (SOC), and our endpoint engineering teams to remedy the issue without compromising the wider network. The specific step-by-step actions we took included incident logging and alert verification followed by safe communication with the quarantine zone, then forced remediation and policy synchronization, ensuring the device was safely coordinated in quarantine with minimal risk of lateral threat movement. Our team executed several technical steps, triggering a forced evaluation cycle from our MDM platform to push mission-critical OS security patches directly to the device, and remotely initiating a manual update script to force the device's local antivirus and EDR definitions to sync with the latest cloud signatures. The final step involved reassessment and automatic return to production.

Portnox's AI has been exceptionally accurate and reliable, especially regarding fingerprinting random IoT or unmatched devices on the network. Previously, with older systems, we experienced many false positives, misidentifying corporate machines, but Portnox very rarely makes mistakes. The risk tooling is dependable, and when machine learning modules flag diverse behavior as risky, there is always a valid technical reason behind it, making Portnox an automated tool we trust to run on autopilot without constant false alarms disrupting user speed.

What is most valuable?

The best features that Portnox offers include identifying user credentials using AV, a cloud-native setup, continuous posture scanning, automated segmentation and remediation, and acting as a twenty-four hour automated security guard that handles the heavy lifting for us.

As we work in the healthcare IT industry, my favorite feature of Portnox is its twenty-four hour operation, as we prioritize security knowing it works for us around the clock during our daily activities.

If I had to pick my favorite feature that has made a significant difference for my team, it would be the automated segmentation and isolation feature, which saves us time during ongoing issues. We no longer need to manually hunt down endpoints or pull devices off the network; Portnox takes care of this instantly, detecting compliance gaps and moving devices to a secure quarantine zone without any manual effort required from us.

What needs improvement?

One area for improvement in Portnox is the initial setup complexity and documentation for custom policy creation. Navigating the cloud console can feel clunky when configuring specific posture rules, especially for a mix of older legacy devices and new operating systems, and the troubleshooting logs are not always clear on why a policy validation failed. More out-of-the-box automation templates for common remediation workflows would also be helpful.

Regarding needed improvements, the reporting and analytics dashboard could be more intuitive. Pulling a quick high-level summary of network compliance or compliance trend histories for leadership feels restrictive due to the built-in reporting filters, requiring more manual digging than necessary. Simplifying the reporting interface and allowing easier customization of dashboard visuals out of the box would make tracking long-term security metrics easier for management.

Portnox's scalability is one of its strongest points. Since it runs in the cloud, we do not experience performance issues typical of older on-premises devices, smoothly handling the rollout of policies across many remote users. Its infrastructure scales automatically in the background, eliminating concerns about capacity or backend upgrades.

How are customer service and support?

Customer support is easy to reach out to, but I have never really interacted with Portnox's customer support as I have not needed assistance.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before Portnox's implementation, we managed everything manually, which consumed much of our time and hindered our focus on more critical IT tasks. After Portnox was introduced, it automated many smaller issues, allowing us to concentrate on higher-priority tasks.

How was the initial setup?

Deploying Portnox cloud without on-premises hardware has been a massive relief, as we previously dealt with the time-consuming logistics of maintaining physical appliances or dedicated virtual servers at multiple sites. Going hardware-free means we avoided those physical logistics, setting up the platform globally quickly while managing security from the cloud console and not worrying about local hardware failures, allowing rapid scaling and policy changes.

What about the implementation team?

Integrating Portnox with our existing identity providers such as Azure AD is surprisingly easy and straightforward due to its native API integrations, allowing seamless connections without complex on-premises proxy servers. Setting up the sync takes very little time and maps existing user groups and security permissions effortlessly.

What was our ROI?

I do not have exact numbers but can say we see a massive return on investment driven by time savings. By automating the device containment and remediation processes, we save countless hours weekly that would have gone into chasing down security alerts and manually isolating non-compliant devices, freeing up our team to focus on higher-value tasks instead of routine firefighting.

What other advice do I have?

If I could give advice, it would be to spend extra time mapping out endpoints and custom compliance policies before deployment. This will prevent initial configuration headaches and ensure effective integration with tools such as Azure AD and MDM platforms, maximizing automated capabilities.

What is our primary use case?

My use case for Portnox is access control, specifically focused on access control.

How has it helped my organization?

Portnox ensures system compliance through policy enforcement, including antivirus updates, Windows operating system updates, and system patches. This helps network administrators maintain system health and security across the network. The solution effectively prevents vulnerabilities and potential security incidents before they escalate.

Portnox enables control and monitoring of the network to see who is active. It has a very nice user interface that is easy to understand and use on the network. Using Portnox has helped limit concerns about port security, eliminating the need to manually open and close ports and maintaining documentation about who connects to which port. When anyone connects, Portnox acts automatically, by showing it on the Portnox dashboard and also showing the system name of the user system. Portnox also yanks the system out if it doesn't meet up with the policy as specified.

If a system is being set up and hence doesn't meet the network security standard, for Portnox not to throw it out, a voucher can be assigned to it, allowing it to be online for a specified amount of time while the system is being worked on. 

Though there are challenges with Portnox, it has made work easier and network security very effective within the local area network. It has reduced manual work in port security configuration and secured the network. When users go against Portnox policies, they are removed, giving administrators the opportunity to access system states as regards security and maintain network security standards.

What is most valuable?

The best features of Portnox are its effectiveness in terms of access control, ensuring security on the network, and making sure basic requirements to be admitted on the network are met. It can e set with parameters like aligning with Windows being up to date as a basic requirement for a particular system to be on the network, presence of anti-virus and regular updates, etc. 

What needs improvement?

The area Portnox needs to organise more training for its partners. They are doing well, but areas of knowledge gaps are still visible. There are times unexpected things happen with Portnox, like Portnox acting abnormally, and even the partners are also confused and have to press a couple of buttons to get it to work. Sometimes it impacts on work and productivity before it is resolved. Portnox can occasionally knock out a switch port, causing network downtime and requiring a manual reset. Consultants sometimes appear unable to predict how Portnox reacts at certain times, leading to situations where network security must be temporarily bypassed. The knowledge gap, though small, can have a significant impact. Portnox should improve by inviting its partners and end-user administrators for comprehensive, constant training, updates, and feedback on the solution to reduce this knowledge gap.

Regarding stability, Portnox is doing well.

We had Portnox installed on our server rather than using Portnox Cloud.

We worked with the consultant to deploy the system. It wasn't too much of an issue to deploy because we transitioned from one particular server to another. The consultant did most of the setup configurations while we worked with them, giving them the information they needed

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I know that IT solutions are expensive. You are charged according to the number of users. For now, the organisation can afford it, but smaller organisations may not be, so Portnox can also consider that when pricing.

What other advice do I have?

The unified access control platform, especially on cloud, offers great functionality. Having all functionalities under one roof is beneficial, though some big organizations prefer on-premises solutions for security purposes.

Regarding conditional access, it can be configured for specific ports, such as ATM machines, to ensure availability while maintaining security. For user systems, conditional access is limited, and vouchers are issued only when necessary, such as when systems need to remain online during maintenance.

As an end user, I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case for Portnox is to authenticate users. Authentication means ensuring that the person connecting to our network is the correct staff member of the organization. Someone cannot simply carry a system from anywhere to the estate and access the facility. Previously, some people brought their systems and were able to connect. With Portnox, it will first verify if you are part of the organization by checking if the person has the password and username. It will also check if that system is a domain-joined system. 

It checks two things: the user and the system being used. It verifies if this person is part of this organization and not a foreign user to our domain. From the support perspective, it checks to see if that person is authenticated via these two methods.

What is most valuable?

Previously, we had a solution where you needed to call for a NAC port issue, and the engineer would check for the port number. With Portnox, you have a large-scale view of the systems on your estate. You can use the ID of that user to search and get substantial information about a user. It is a very robust application because three teams use that part: the network team, the security team, and the support people. If I need to get a particular number to find out where a switch is or a particular port on a switch, I can use it to get it. The previous solution did not accommodate these features.

What needs improvement?

Using Portnox is easy. The only challenge is the time it takes to connect because authentication occurs on the cloud. If there are issues with the cloud-based server, authentication becomes problematic. This authentication issue with Portnox needs to be addressed. We have observed that it takes time for people to authenticate based on the fact that the cloud-based facilities are having issues. Authentication is delayed because it is communicating with a set of controllers.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Portnox for more than three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

For the stability of Portnox, it needs to be made more accessible. When they have an update, there should be time-to-time communication. There should be something easier to push through. If there is a version one and another version, the communication between the organization using it and Portnox should be firm so they can coordinate effectively. We have seen instances where the older version stops working properly, and we have to update each system individually. This process is time-consuming as it needs to be done manually for each system experiencing issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is very satisfactory.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I only used Portnox. They were trying to review it, and there wasn't a better solution at that time.

How was the initial setup?

For enrollment, you must have the software installed first. Then it authenticates the user by checking if the user ID is correct. After that, it will indicate if your device is healthy. The enrollment process involves entering your organization's details for confirmation.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The procurement portion is handled by another team due to segregation of duties. While I cannot specify the price, we have been using it consistently. Considering that the solution might be priced in foreign currency, if it were not cost-effective, they would have retired it.

What is our primary use case?

Portnox was primarily used for network access control, which granted access to enterprise devices based on specific parameters that we set.

A specific example of how I used Portnox for network access control in my environment involved network devices and enterprise devices that did not meet specific criteria. For instance, if a device was no longer joined to the domain, even if it was an enterprise device, and had lost trust with the domain, it would not be able to connect to the network. In such cases, the device owner would need to reach out to me or to the local IT support representative for the branch to obtain temporary access so that the device could be joined to the domain to regain trust, and then it would resume normal operation. That was the primary use case.

Regarding my main use case with Portnox, it was used because we were in the setup phase when I started using it. It was an ongoing project, and it was primarily focused on network access control. It functioned effectively.

What is most valuable?

The best features Portnox offers include its highly responsive nature and its customizability, as you can set the parameters and it responds effectively to those set parameters.

Portnox has positively impacted my organization by ensuring that only authorized devices connect to the local network, serving as the first point of defense for our network devices. Even if someone attempts to change their MAC address to connect, Portnox detects it, blocks the device, and alerts us, prompting investigation to resolve the issue. This has reduced the number of incidents where people bring their own personal devices and connect them to the local network.

What needs improvement?

During my daily use, I noticed that if you have many devices being managed by a particular server, any device being managed by that server takes quite a bit of time to respond. If you log into Portnox and need to grant temporary access to a particular device, and the device is managed by a server that has many devices on it, it takes much longer than it would for devices being managed by another server that is not overwhelmed. It is very important that you share the load or, if needed, add more servers to manage the devices depending on the total number of devices you have.

Portnox offers an edge over alternatives in terms of customization. You can arrange it based on steps, with zones and branches, making it easier to sort and filter. One suggestion I have is that Portnox should automatically attempt to share the load and suggest load distribution, instead of requiring manual movement of devices across different servers.

In my current field, I have been working for approximately six to seven years.

Portnox is stable.

Portnox has been a stable and reliable platform in our experience. Since deployment, it has consistently performed well, with minimal downtime or service disruptions. The cloud-native architecture contributes to its stability because updates, maintenance, and platform enhancements are handled seamlessly without requiring significant intervention from our team. This has helped us maintain continuous network access control and security policy enforcement across our environment.

Moving from a traditional, on-premise Network Access Control solution, fully managed by the IT department, to a cloud-based NAC solution like Portnox offers significant cost savings.

What is most valuable?

The cloud-based feature of Portnox is excellent. We use Meraki for our switching, making it simple to point all our networks and offices to Portnox. It is seamless and integrates well with our Azure setup.

What needs improvement?

We use devices like PLCs and controllers, and when we receive a request to allow one on the network, we bypass typical authentication, associate it with a group account, and push it to a firewalled VLAN. However, problems arise when the same MAC address is requested for a different project. Our current system only finds authenticated MAC addresses, making it difficult to troubleshoot when the same device is used for multiple purposes. Ideally, we should be able to search for any MAC address in the database, regardless of its authentication status, to see all its associated groups and potential conflicts.

Operational efficiency has become more complex and time-consuming due to increased security measures. While previously devices could easily connect to the network, now a more rigorous procedure is required to ensure security. This involves a help desk ticket and MAC address bypass to properly document and allow devices, which are often more than just employee laptops, onto the network. Although this process increases complexity and workload, it significantly enhances security.

The maintenance is managed by Portnox.

While cloud security is a valid concern, Portnox prioritizes security as a network security company. Their practices align with industry standards, even with the increased exposure of a cloud-based system. For global companies, the centralized management platform offers significant advantages.

My main use case for Portnox is as a security tool that I use to monitor network devices like laptops and desktops.

Regarding my main use case for Portnox, if you bring in a device that is not accredited in the banking environment, it will knock it off the network.

I have practically summarized the use case of Portnox, so I do not have anything else to add about the features.

Portnox has positively impacted my organization because it helps keep the organization's data and security infrastructure safe to some extent, even though I use other security tools as well.

Portnox contributes to keeping my data and security infrastructure safe by giving me an overview of all the devices connected to my network, both on Wi-Fi and the LAN ports that are connected to the switch, which enables me to monitor and review the devices connected to my network; that helps a lot.

What is most valuable?

The best features Portnox offers are the ability to view the devices, the details, the MAC address, and the IP address; that is what is unique about Portnox and the ability to either block or unblock devices.

What I value most about being able to block or unblock devices is the control and the speed; both of them.

Portnox's AI features handle security effectively, managing access and protecting data. It allows me to know who accesses the network and which device accesses my network. Portnox does the job well in this aspect.

Portnox's AI capabilities are excellent in terms of accuracy and reliability, consistently providing correct information or alerts. For every network connected, it can send me an alert that a particular user is connected to my network, giving me a real-time view if I enable the alerts.

What needs improvement?

I do not have anything in mind for Portnox to improve, perhaps except for the interface to make it much easier to use.

What is our primary use case?

My initial use case for Portnox was as an on-prem solution that we used for network access control. We implemented ISO 27001 around that period, and Portnox served as our network access control. It helped in locking our ports where unauthorized users or devices in the environment were blocked. It worked pretty efficiently for us.

The last time I used Portnox was earlier this year because I just moved roles. Where I am now, I've recommended that Portnox be implemented, which is currently under review. We might contact the vendor for a PoC, but it's something that I know works and has helped me significantly in terms of network access control.

How has it helped my organization?

Portnox helped to free up staff time and resources for other IT security priorities and IT work. There were improvements in our operational efficiency after installing Portnox, as we were able to block unauthorized users entirely from gaining access to the organizational Wi-Fi. It helps when we see people sharing or using outdated PCs in the environment.

I found the user interface of Portnox quite cool. It's good, and I enjoyed it. The interface was something I never had issues with, and the UI was superb.

I used Portnox conditional access, and for me, it's a cool feature.

Portnox did allow us to stop people from not allowing their PCs to be patched fully.

What is most valuable?

One of the features I enjoyed the most about Portnox was the ability to dive in with proper details on an endpoint. For instance, you can see a PC connected to it, and you can tell which user the PC is using and which version of the OS it's running. It provides very granular details of the device connected to each port. The ability to integrate it with a wireless controller helped me implement Portnox in our Wi-Fi solution.

What needs improvement?

The Wi-Fi integration could be done better from their end. If there is an improvement, it should be around having more functions on the integration with the Wi-Fi controller I used, which was a UniFi controller, also on-prem. It was a seamless integration, but we did experience some difficulties initially where mobile phones were being locked out until we figured out how to set footprints for mobile phones that would be able to connect using Portnox to access the Wi-Fi in the environment.

At this point, there is nothing additional I want from Portnox.

I started using Portnox in 2018, so it has been quite a while now.

In the four years that I used Portnox, if it crashed or the server crashed, that would not have been more than once.

The deployment took about a week, but the onboarding of devices was an ongoing event.  It took about a month because we had over a hundred of them.

For deployment, there were just three people in my team who were assigned to handle it, and we were able to do it.

We worked with the vendor, just one person from the vendor and three from the in-house team.
