Extensive data models enhance integration while training but technology adoption needs improvement
Pros and Cons
  • "SAP MDG has extensive data models and good integration with upstream and downstream systems."
  • "SAP could do better in attracting talent and simplifying technology adoption."

What is our primary use case?

The primary use case for SAP Master Data Governance is similar to when using Informatica Hub and IDQ; it is used in the same fashion.

What is most valuable?

SAP MDG has extensive data models and good integration with upstream and downstream systems. I appreciate IDQ, CDM, and CDQ within SAP MDG.

What needs improvement?

SAP could do better in attracting talent and simplifying technology adoption. There's a need for SAP to develop an overall technology stack and bring resources up to speed with new technologies like cloud. Training is essential, and they should carry resources along with their roadmap.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for four or five years.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I previously used Informatica. I prefer Informatica because I find IDQ, as a standalone tool, quite powerful and stable. It also provides easy access to data.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The challenge with SAP MDG is not only the cost but the resources. The skills required are niche in the market, and while you can purchase the product either one time or on a subscription basis, the challenge is in building something out of it.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate SAP MDG seven out of ten.

They should improve training, accessibility, and integration with other products.

Provides us with seamless connectivity, an excellent data replication framework and continuous monitoring
Pros and Cons
  • "Validates all aspects from security to authorization and authentication."
  • "Additionally, the solution complies with all industry standards and validates all aspects from security to authorization and authentication as applicable at the backend, providing room for easy maintenance."
  • "It does not ensure data matches after system upgrades."
  • "Although changes are currently being made to fix it, the product can be improved by ensuring data matches when upgrading to a new system because every system does not use SAP."

What is our primary use case?

The continuous governance of creating master data is great. If the master data is unorganized or inaccurate, the sanctity of the transition data would not be intact. Hence, this solution provides continuous monitoring and governance for creating the master data. We deploy this solution on public cloud and on-premises.

What is most valuable?

The data replication framework feature is great. It has new aspects like MDQ and MDC that have allowed it to evolve to a better level. Initially, MDG was a one-party system where you create the data and manually copy it to other systems. Whereas with MDC, Master Data Consolidation, and MDQ, Master Data Quality, it is easier to consolidate across systems. Once data is saved via MDQ, a client can maintain its quality.

What needs improvement?

Although changes are currently being made to fix it, the product can be improved by ensuring data matches when upgrading to a new system because every system does not use SAP. Furthermore, the product has five different solutions with varying data models so stability is vital to SAP. Every time there is a connection with a new system, customization needs to be redone to ensure both layers can communicate seamlessly and data models need to be set.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution for approximately six years. I have two different kinds of experience with this in my role as a solution architect and as a consultant. I contributed to developing various solutions on MDG, namely, SAP Enterprise Management, SAP Asset Intelligence Workplace, SAP Retail and Fashion Management, SAP Retail RMP, Retail Mass Processing, SAP Service Management, SAP Accelerator on an MDG board and SAP Data Governance Accelerator. These solutions are available on SAP.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable and mature.

How are customer service and support?

We have had a good experience with customer service and support. Previously, I played the role of technical support personnel for our customers, and we won a pinnacle award for three consecutive years for support parts. I believe technical support is beneficial.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward. However, this is dependent on the skill of the individual setting it up. If the individual has previous exposure to technology, it will be easy. Configuring the product is straightforward as detailed configuration guides are available, and various scenarios are covered in the documentation. However, regarding change management where MDG has been infused into the landscape, it is more difficult to set up because of some of the process flows in the material. Multiple tabs and fields may make it difficult for a new user to understand where errors have been made. I rate the setup process an eight and a half out of ten.

Deployment takes a while when setting it up for the end users because it cannot be used directly out of the box since most clients have custom logic in their systems that must be incorporated. Hence, innovative implementation efforts are required because of the diversity in the landscape.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing and licensing costs are reasonable because people often opt for this specific product since they understand its importance. Hence, the price is not a huge deciding factor when choosing the product.

What other advice do I have?

I rate this solution a nine out of ten. Although other SAP solutions are available, this solution provides seamless connectivity. Hence the chance of losing data is minimal. Additionally, the solution complies with all industry standards and validates all aspects from security to authorization and authentication as applicable at the backend, providing room for easy maintenance. This solution is good but it does not ensure data matches after system upgrades.

Very user friendly with quality output; lacking some features we require
Pros and Cons
  • "User-friendly and provides customized reports and personalized data."
  • "This is a high-quality solution and provides for proper governance, is user-friendly, and enables us to get a lot of customized reports and personalized data so there is no need to have different applications to check data quality."
  • "Lacks some features that are available in other solutions."
  • "MDG doesn't work for all material types of activities that I think it should be dealing with."

What is our primary use case?

I work on the functional side of this solution. From an operations point of view, that relates to critical attributions, rules, the way in which data quality improves, and the way the tool governs activities with respect to different business stakeholders. I work for a global analytics and consulting company. We are end users and I'm a senior manager.

What is most valuable?

This is a high-quality solution and provides for proper governance. It's also user-friendly, and we're able to get a lot of customized reports and personalized data. It enables quality output so there's no need to have different applications to check data quality.

What needs improvement?

In terms of bringing out the data and resource performance, we're looking for a more enhanced version. MDG doesn't work for all material types of activities that I think it should be dealing with. If that were to change, this solution would be a step above other ERP systems. I'd like to see some planning-related activities included in the product.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

How are customer service and support?

We've had some contact with technical support and they are good.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is quite complex. It requires an initial step of data cleansing and data profiling. We used a third-party service for deployment. Implementation time depends on whether the setup is a basic one or something more complicated. The product master aspect is quite complex. The solution requires minimal annual maintenance once it's implemented. We have around 50 users in the company.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

In terms of the license, I believe this product is at the higher end of the market but I'm unaware of licensing costs.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Pega has features that are lacking in MDG. Functionalities such as BOM, RECIPE, and the like, can all be collected and created. It provides data collection that MDG doesn't have.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend this solution and rate it seven out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Other

The product enables data capturing and data governance, but it is not user-friendly, and it is expensive
Pros and Cons
  • "The data capturing and data governance features are valuable."
  • "The product is not user-friendly."

What is our primary use case?

The solution is used for workflow, data collection, and integration with SAP and Salesforce.

What is most valuable?

The data capturing and data governance features are valuable. The integration with SAP is also a good feature.

What needs improvement?

It is difficult to expand the product with new functionalities. It takes time and specific knowledge. We require a specialist with experience in it. Integration with other tools like Salesforce and SAP Ariba is not stable. The product is not user-friendly. It takes time to work with the tool. The tool is not flexible.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Once the tool is set up, it is pretty stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is difficult to scale the tool. Around 200 people use the solution in my organization.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

The previous solutions we used are obsolete now.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was difficult. It was time-consuming.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The product is too expensive.

What other advice do I have?

We implemented S/4HANA. We were acquiring new companies. So, we invested in SAP Master Data Governance. There are other tools in the market that are more flexible than SAP Master Data Governance. Overall, I rate the solution a six out of ten.

Scalable solution with a good technical support team
Pros and Cons
  • "It is a stable solution."
  • "It could be more user-friendly."

What is most valuable?

The solution's most valuable features are recall, policies, standard business rules, workflow, and automation.

What needs improvement?

They should integrate the solution with different domains. Also, they should include features for product planning, QM master data, etc. Its pricing needs improvement too. In addition, they should make it more user-friendly.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using the solution for more than 15 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a scalable solution. We have 100 solution users as our customers.

How are customer service and support?

The solution's technical support is quite good.

How was the initial setup?

The solution's initial setup process requires specific knowledge and help from the support team. Also, the time taken for deployment depends on the nature of the work. It includes the type of tool matrix, amount of workload, etc.

What about the implementation team?

We have a team of executives to plan data strategies and policies. As well as we require technical resources to help us deploy the solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is costly. Our customers buy perpetual and annual licenses for it.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend the solution to others. I rate it as eight. I advise others to go for it if they don't require any customizable functionality. But they should look for other tools if they have a more complex system.

Has the ability to identify duplicate data in the workflow and clean it
Pros and Cons
  • "I am satisfied with the solution's customer service."
  • "They should improve the solution's performance as sometimes the process consumes much time."

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution for features like material master data, auto derivations, and duplicate checks.

What is most valuable?

The solution's most valuable feature is the ability to identify duplicate data in the workflow and clean it.

What needs improvement?

They should improve the solution's performance as sometimes the process consumes much time.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for five to six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have around 50 users in our organization using the solution

How are customer service and support?

I am satisfied with the solution's customer service. Whenever we need their help, they schedule a call with us, review the issue, and try to give us at least two possible solutions.

How was the initial setup?

We followed the configuration guide to implement the solution during the initial setup.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented the solution in-house. We were able to do it using the guidance documentation. The time taken for deployment depends on the configuration, and it requires just one person to do that.

What was our ROI?

The ROI of the solution is worth it.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We have purchased the yearly license of the solution. I rate the solution's pricing as an eight.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend the solution to others and rate it as an eight.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Great for streamlining the master data management process and improving data quality
Pros and Cons
  • "This is an all-around good product."
  • "This product is helpful for streamlining the master data management process, improving the quality of the master data."
  • "The documentation provided for the MDG extensions by Utopia could be improved."
  • "The technical support is okay but we sometimes struggle to get the responses in a timely manner."

What is our primary use case?

This product is helpful for streamlining the master data management process, improving the quality of the master data. That's the typical use case. I'm the senior manager in the company and a solutions architect - we provide this solution to our clients.

What is most valuable?

I like everything about this product, primarily because I'm an SAP guy, and I've been working with their products for nearly 15 years so I'm naturally more inclined towards SAP. The company provides good documentation which is very helpful.

What needs improvement?

One thing that could be improved is the documentation provided for the MDG extensions by Utopia. I'd also like to see increased maturity around reference data solutions. The solution already has some key master data domains but it would be helpful to have a few more that are not out of the box.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for several years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

There are different modules in MDG, and the standard ones are stable. There are sometimes issues when new releases come out.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

From my perspective, the product is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support is okay but we sometimes struggle to get the responses in a timely manner. It's generally okay, given that it's an established platform.

How was the initial setup?

I'm not involved on the technical side, so I don't know whether the setup is complicated.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

In my role as a solutions architect, I don't get involved in the procurement side. Different clients have different commercial models for buying the license and I'm not privy to that information.

What other advice do I have?

I definitely recommend this solution and rate it eight out of 10.

Reliable and integrates well
Pros and Cons
  • "SAP Master Data Governance integrates well."

What is our primary use case?

SAP Master Data Governance is used for enterprise architecture.

    What is most valuable?

SAP Master Data Governance integrates well.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using SAP Master Data Governance for three and a half years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

SAP Master Data Governance has been stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I have found SAP Master Data Governance to be scalable.

We have approximately 500 people using this solution in my organization.

    What about the implementation team?

We have consultants that handle the maintenance and support of SAP Master Data Governance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We have an enterprise license. The whole SAP landscape pricing model is based on the number of users, and the number of transactions. The price could be better, there is always room for improvement in the price.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution to others.

I rate SAP Master Data Governance a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

    On-premises

Stable with good support and workflow engine but they could harmonize with third-party products
    Pros and Cons
    • "The new workflow engine is based on the web app rather than the Java-based approach."
    • "Technical support is good."
    • "I would like to see harmonizing with some of the external third-party products so that it will all be within SAP."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution for master data objects.

We just basically install it and tune it and run it.

    What is most valuable?

The new workflow engine is based on the web app rather than the Java-based approach. The MDM product is pretty good. The new Fiori front-ends for it, it makes the visual slot better than before.

    What needs improvement?

I really look at it from the technology side, rather than use it from the function side. So, there are not really many improvements I can see from the functionality.

I would like to see harmonizing with some of the external third-party products so that it will all be within SAP.

For how long have I used the solution?

We put MDG in approximately two and a half years ago.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    It's a very stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's a scalable product. We are in Azure, we can scale it up as much as we need to.

It's rolled out to approximately 1,000 name users.

We may increase our usage in the future but it depends on the master data objects that get rolled out.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is good. We have not had any issues in this area.

    How was the initial setup?

The technology setup was reasonably straightforward. I think the actual prerequisite in terms of the harmonization of the actual master data itself was probably quite a lengthy process.

The team does the installation and then the maintenance of the product itself rather than the functionality.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The licensing is managed by a separate department in our company.

What other advice do I have?

To other users who are interested in using this solution, I would suggest making sure that your master data is in good shape before you take on the technical implementation.

I would rate SAP Data Governance a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

    Private Cloud
