We were trying to optimize production by approaching an in-house development, so we approached TIBCO Spotfire to use its platform by using Python and building an algorithm to optimize and forecast our production. That's what we have been doing.

The main thing has been production and reservoir surveillance.

We were working with OFM, Schlumberger software and we were using Excel and SQL to connect all the databases, but they run locally, so they were pretty slow. Since three years ago, the team has been working on Python as a very versatile platform to connect, for example, Petrel to Python. There are many geophysics that connect with Python interface, so that would be our main platform that could be competitive to TIBCO Spotfire because it's free. It depends upon your capability to code, but that's how the team has been working on.

I think having Python included is a big win because you get the chance to customize your algorithm and your in-house development without having a big dependency on a third party. Sometimes the criteria to have the analysis done changes upon the leader you have, so having this versatile capability to build your own algorithms is pretty important for us.

Processing time is good, so you gain some time and save time by the processing, and you get more time to do your own analysis. That's the best part of it, that it's fast.

Because we have GIS, in terms of mapping and creating a visualization that grows with the database, but also with different APIs, we have used it, and it has worked very well.

It was kind of tough to have the visualizations with HTML, or you have to create your own page. But it was working great with buttons and every page updated pretty fast with the server capability, and it was handling a big amount of data, maybe five years of data. It was performing quite well, taking maybe three minutes to update the whole model.

It has been good, but most recently, they changed the commercial methodology to get the license. Our política in the company is to hire or get licenses year by year, but most recently, TIBCO Spotfire asked us to have a three-year license term. That made things a little bit tougher for the commercial relationship.

Maybe with all these automation processes that you have, those could be more visually friendly. N8N is a good example where you could connect some platforms, and you don't have to code strictly, but you could visually create an algorithm. That capability of clicking and dragging some boxes of code could actually facilitate how people create their own algorithms. It could be very useful if the coding part of using the platform could be more user-friendly in terms of visual capability.

This project began maybe two, three years ago.

The support receives a rating of six because we're a Colombian company that has our base in Calgary. The support was kind of tough for some people without the third party that we had in Colombia. Once that third party got out, the support became a little bit tougher and slower in that sense. Having a local partner was crucial for us while they were there.

We mostly use Spotfire for analytics and reporting. It is used for auditing kind of decision making, mostly on the historic data. We do not utilize the real-time metrics.

I find the power of the information links valuable in Spotfire, as it allows complex queries to be handled efficiently. It offers segregation of connection and reusable information links. While often considered an enterprise tool due to its cost, Spotfire works exceptionally well for enterprise-level credit costs. The enterprise licensing of Spotfire is much more effective compared to competitors like Tableau or Power BI Premium.

Spotfire requires better documentation. Unlike competitors like Power BI and Tableau, Spotfire lacks comprehensive metadata dictionaries. This makes it difficult to generate usage metrics, which are essential to determine if reports are being utilized effectively. 

Additionally, the number of native data source connectors in Spotfire is less compared to Power BI and Tableau, which could be improved.

I have been using Spotfire for close to three years.

While I have not been exposed to platform administration, Spotfire seems scalable, given its large customer base.

I have not interacted much with technical support due to being in a development role, so I cannot comment extensively.

Mainly, we've been using it for different reports and dashboarding purposes for different stakeholders, such as the cards business, the financial teams, and banking transformation. Depending on their use case, we have been working on different reports.

It has allowed end users to enhance data discovery, which has facilitated faster decision-making.

The flexibility, data preparation, and data wrangling abilities of the platform are exceptional. Additionally, the tool is user-friendly and facilitates enhanced data discovery.

The hierarchies or the maps to some extent may need some modifications. The layered features within Spotfire can make it a bit complicated sometimes as compared to Power BI.

I've been working on both tools for the last three years.

It has some latency issues, especially when working on large datasets.

It is pretty much scalable as you can add different clusters to it. It depends on the license type. However, in general, it is scalable.

The support services provided are not very engaging compared to other tools like Power BI or Tableau. Resources for learning about the different features of Spotfire are also limited.

If you are an expert and know how to perform the setup, it generally takes two to three hours for installation and configuration. However, the setup process is a bit complex, especially for the server-side deployment.

One person with the right expertise is enough to handle the installation and configuration tasks.

Spotfire is value for money. That said, it is not something that everyone can afford. It offers significant features and benefits, making it worth the investment.

Spotfire is a bit costly in terms of money, but it is value for money if you are installing it and working with it. Companies need to consider their budget and affordability before opting for Spotfire. In comparison, Power BI is cheaper and easier for companies to deploy.
