What is our primary use case?

Trend Micro Smart Protection is used for malware analysis. Trend Micro Smart Protection is integrated with the XDR Vision One.

What is most valuable?

Trend Micro Smart Protection has good features like malware analysis, C-to-C connection and detection, workbench, auto security play with features, and lots of DDI features.

What needs improvement?

We can create security playbooks from our detected workbench for future detection in XDR Vision One. Suppose an error happened in the past, and we created a security playbook for this event. The next time this event happens again, the security playbook can detect the error and notify the incident responder.

The solution's device control options are not too beneficial. If I block USB detection, all USBs, including the non-storage devices or any other devices, are blocked. These are the issues with Trend Micro Smart Protection.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Trend Micro Smart Protection for eight to nine months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Trend Micro Smart Protection is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Trend Micro Smart Protection is a scalable solution. More than 500 users are using the solution in our organization.

How was the initial setup?

Trend Micro Smart Protection's initial setup is easy. The agent is pushed by any PDQ software at the client end, and just one click is required for installation. All endpoints are connected with Apex One Central, and Apex One Central is connected with XDR Vision One and Trend Micro Smart Protection.

What about the implementation team?

If I have 600 endpoints, I can push 600 agents by PDQ in one go within two to three days. XDR Vision One and Trend Micro Smart Protection require two to three hours because it's a cloud-based solution. If we seek the help of Trend Micro Guide, we can deploy XDR Vision One or activate the Vision One license on the cloud. This is not a long procedure, and installing XDR Vision One and Trend Micro Smart Protection takes approximately two to three hours.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I rate Trend Micro Smart Protection a six out of ten.

The main use case for Trend Micro Smart Protection is Endpoint Protection, antimalware, EDR, and so on.

What is most valuable?

The advantages of Trend Micro Smart Protection include its best feature, which is virtual patching.

Real-time analysis in Trend Micro Smart Protection is good, as normal as one would expect. The products are very good, the agent is very light, and it doesn't cause any issues on the machine, but their support is not good; Trend Micro support needs more enhancement.

Trend Micro Smart Protection does have an impact on threat management; it's a preventative solution that prevents threats. However, it's not about threat management. If you use the EDR feature, it will have a nice impact on threat prevention and protection, but not threat management.

The positive impact of the Trend Micro Smart Protection solution includes the machine learning part, the virtual patching part, and the analytics.

What needs improvement?

Technical support needs to be improved. We had a customer move from Trend Micro because they didn't the support.

Both response time and ownership are the problems with support.

Trend Micro Smart Protection is doing fine with features. They need to add more integration with other vendors outside their Trend Micro ecosystem; some of their products only work with or accept integrations with only Trend Micro products. I would recommend increasing the integration ecosystem with other vendors.

I've been working with Trend Micro Smart Protection for about one year.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

Regarding Trend Micro, I work with some solutions such as Deep Discovery, Mobile Security, and Smart Protection, and I have moderate knowledge of Trend Micro products.

I do work with the Endpoint Protection solution from Trend Micro, which is called Smart Protection.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Any product has some issues, but I'm not very familiar with the operational issues. I'm not aware of any performance or latency issues.

I haven't heard any big concern about Trend Micro, but since I hear concerns about the support, that means there are issues. Otherwise, they wouldn't need support. I'm not the best one to answer this question.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of Trend Micro Smart Protection has no limitations; it scales nicely. It's just an endpoint, so that's fine. You just add licenses; there's nothing to scale.

How are customer service and support?

Trend Micro products are very good, the agent is very light, and it doesn't cause any issues on the machine, but their support is not good; Trend Micro support needs enhancement.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

If I compare Trend Micro Smart Protection with other competitors such as Trellix, Palo Alto, or Kaspersky, I see it's a little bit cheaper than Palo Alto, and they have virtual patching. I don't think Palo Alto has virtual patching; I think they are the only vendor who has virtual patching. That's it; there is no major benefit over other products.

How was the initial setup?

Trend Micro is easy to install. Trend Micro solutions are not complex.

What about the implementation team?

I am also reselling it; I'm a reseller.

What was our ROI?

Any cybersecurity solution has a good ROI for any company, bank, or customer. Especially for important customers who care about their reputation and brand protection, the ROI should be nice. It has a nice impact on ROI; any good cybersecurity product should have.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I find that Trend Micro Smart Protection is affordable; I don't think it can be quite expensive.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I've been working with Trend Micro Smart Protection for about one year. The main use case for Trend Micro Smart Protection is Endpoint Protection, antimalware, EDR, and so on.

What other advice do I have?

I work with Trellix MOVE Antivirus, along with Trellix HX, EDR, and Endpoint Protection. I work with the EDR solution from Trellix on-prem; I don't have it on the cloud.

I have close experience with Trend Micro and Palo Alto, just keep in mind that my experience is as a solution architect, and I don't configure these products myself. I know some features, but I don't have operational experience.

As for Kaspersky, I don't work with it too much. We just signed with Kaspersky, so I'm not very familiar with its products yet.

In general, the main concern is mainly support; there are no other problems with the product.

On a scale of 1-10, I rate Trend Micro Smart Protection a seven.

We use the solution for endpoint protection, data leak protection, and email filtering.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of the solution is its simplicity. You don't have to think about features. You can have some customizations for certain groups or categories of endpoints, but it's something that you can find in many other products. The most important thing is the simplicity of the solution.

What needs improvement?

The solution’s technical support is not very good and could be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Trend Micro Smart Protection since 2017.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Around 250 users are using the solution in our organization.

How are customer service and support?

The solution’s technical support is not very good. The technical support is very, very slow. Sometimes, they ask you to send them a lot of information and copies of emails. I don't find the technical support team very agile.

The solution’s initial setup was easy.

What about the implementation team?

The solution’s deployment took less than a week. Two people from technical and organizational departments were involved in the solution's deployment.

What other advice do I have?

Some real viruses have trespassed the protection, but it is common for many other products. That's why we have different products. Sometimes, Trend Micro is the best, and other times it is not the best. The solution's data loss prevention capabilities work for important personal information, including information about salaries for the HR department.

The impact of the solution's user interface and ease of use has been normal on our security operations. The solution's user interface is not very heavy and difficult to use, but it does not have other advantages. We have three guys who deal with everything in the administration department, including network security, operating systems, storage, and backups.

Overall, I rate the solution a seven out of ten.

The tool’s setup is not complex. It is a Linux-based platform and there is no configuration. We can configure the schedule to update and push through the network server which will take around one hour to complete.

I would rate the tool a nine out of ten.

The initial setup of Trend Micro Smart Protection was straightforward. The full implementation took us approximately two months.

We have a different strategy for us to build in-house capability to not only use Trend Micro Smart Protection but support it at the first level and we go as far as the second level. This is our methodology.

We did the implementation of Trend Micro Smart Protection in-house with a team of five people. 

What was our ROI?

We have seen a return on investment using Trend Micro Smart Protection.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Whether something is affordable or pricy, is relative. It depends on the value an institution has attached to a capability. For us, security is a premium requirement, I can't say a solution is pricey if we are able to afford it and run it for seven years, I would say it's affordable.

We go through a partner to purchase Trend Micro Smart Protection and there is a partner fee. However, it does not impact the price because we get a bundled offer price.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated approximately four other options before choosing Trend Micro Smart Protection. The organization I worked for has a very competitive procurement process. Once our extensive evaluation was done, we looked at all the positives and negatives of each competing solution, Trend Micro Smart Protection came out best suited for our needs. 

The goal was to get a system that was fully automated, reduce the false positives, and could be easily adapted for the changes in attacks.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend Trend Micro Smart Protection to others. The adaptability of this solution is very good in a short time.

The initial setup is straightforward, with testing done in advance to ensure smooth production deployment. Its implementation in a testing environment takes about two weeks, with production requiring about one and a half days. We have a team of seven engineers dedicated to setup and monitoring.

We've observed the product ROI within a couple of years.

The product pricing for PCs is reasonable, but server security can be expensive.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend the product especially for small to medium-sized enterprises seeking robust endpoint protection. Ensure it aligns with your organization's security needs and integrates well with existing infrastructure. 

Endpoint security is crucial, complemented by network security measures and robust data protection policies.

What is our primary use case?

We use Trend Micro for multiple purposes like endpoint security, in some cases for the servers, and smart use like DLP and vulnerability protection, encryption, and application control. These are also the selling points for the product. 

What is most valuable?

According to the Gartner report, Trend Micro has been the leader for the past eight years in the market. The solution has multiple modules within a single agent deployment. 

Another advantage is the presence of both on-premise and cloud console features. For any type of customer we approach, we can set up their module based on the requirement.

The additional feature of Data Leakage Prevention adds more value to the product. It is overall a good solution in terms of functionality and performance as well. 

What needs improvement?

Our technical team suggests that the product meets all customer expectations but the DLP side of the product can be improved. Specifically, some functionalities within the IDLP can be improved. 

When the user goes on roaming mode, the data log is not pulled into the management console, this is one drawback we witness in the solution. This solution is also lacking in Shadow Copy. We have noticed these drawbacks from our customer service. 

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for more than a year. 

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This is a scalable product. We use this solution to work with all types of clients, from small businesses to enterprises. With this solution, we mostly focus on the government, medical, and insurance sectors.  

How are customer service and support?

Tech support for this solution is outstanding. I will rate the customer support a nine out of ten. Sometimes, there will be a small delay for layers three or four, but for layers one or two, we are getting a very quick response. When escalated to the next level, there is a small delay, but they definitely reach out to us.

How was the initial setup?

We don't find something difficult in terms of deployment in comparison to other end-point security solutions. The deployment time required for this solution depends on the network; for example, if it's a network for a hundred users, we can finish in two to three days.

Based on the network size, only one or two engineers are required for complete deployment. The product is easy to maintain and needs only one person for maintenance. As the product has been in the market for a very long time, the customers find the console very flexible and easy to use. 

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is a little bit expensive in comparison to other traditional tools like ESET, Symantec, or McAfee; there remains mostly a ten percent difference in cost. The licensing of the solution needs to be done yearly and there are no extra costs. 

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We also work with ESET, which we see as an alternative to Trend Micro Smart Protection by considering the performance and functionality. But we prefer Trend Micro Smart Protection as customers consider reports like the Forrester, NSS Labs, or Gartner report, and there we get an advantage. Also in terms of functionality, this solution is one step ahead of ESET. 

What other advice do I have?

When the customer has a product in place, they should try to utilize all the modules available in the product. When we move on to deployment, somebody can stop with the endpoint security due to the engineers not having the proper quality to deploy the product. But when it comes to vulnerability management, DLP modules, and application control, all need to be used in the network. I would rate the product a nine out of ten.
