A scalable solution for managing multiple locations and entities
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution’s scalability is good."

What is our primary use case?

We deployed Ubiquiti UniFi Switches for our enterprise office-level network, establishing a multi-layer LAN network encompassing several locations connected via VPN side-to-side connections.

    What is most valuable?

The entire management console of Ubiquiti UniFi Switches is beautifully designed, offering an intuitive interface for efficiently managing multiple locations and entities. With a single point of configuration, this system seamlessly extends its settings to all connected Ubiquiti devices. Furthermore, its unified interface seamlessly integrates additional features such as video surveillance, CCTV, and other functionalities within the environment.

    What needs improvement?

Sometimes, the modern UI still lacks certain features the legacy UI provides. Users have to switch back and forth between the two UIs, which is annoying but manageable. The entire feature set from the legacy UI should be incorporated into the modern UI.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Ubiquiti UniFi Switches for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is very stable when you use it in an office environment. However, there's a distinction in stability when transitioning to the enterprise edition. This differentiation is crucial, particularly with the recent introduction of data-centre-grade products to the market earlier this year. When we initially ordered these switches, only the office branch was available. Consequently, our data centre's required data load exceeded the capacity of Ubiquiti switches. Due to the considerably higher data load, we had to distinguish between using them in an office environment and a data centre.

Ubiquiti switches reach their limitations beyond a network and internet capacity of approximately two GB synchronously.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

    The solution’s scalability is good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I had experience with Cisco. If I had to compare the configuration process with Cisco enterprise switch and Ubiquiti UniFi Switches, I would always choose Ubiquiti UniFi Switches because of the UI experience. If I had to choose a data centre environment, I would choose Cisco or the HPE environment for switch-wise. They are capable of handling more load.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward. Moreover, these switches offer many interesting features, especially when multiple switches are housed in a single rack. You can overlay augmented reality using your cell phone camera to gain additional information about cable names and their respective connections. The setup was deployed within two days in seven office branches, an entire data centre network with 50 devices.

    What was our ROI?

The solution improves the process of getting online. Additionally, it provides a backup solution in case our primary ISP breaks down, which is seamlessly integrated and functions straight out of the box. The entire configuration wizard makes enterprise deployment straightforward. Moreover, Ubiquiti offers a unique system for setting up complex configurations like multi-pass, efficiently considering all the necessary elements for a modern deployment.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.

A stable and easy-to-deploy solution that can be used to do firmware updates easily
    Pros and Cons
    • "The most valuable feature of Ubiquiti UniFi Switches is that once you buy them, you own them."
    • "If Ubiquiti UniFi Switches had some live support instead of community support, that would go a long way."

What is our primary use case?

The best use cases for the unmanned or the Layer two Ubiquiti UniFi Switches have been in small businesses, which are companies with less than 50 employees.

    What is most valuable?

Ubiquiti UniFi Switches typically stay up and running when they're up and running. The most valuable feature of Ubiquiti UniFi Switches is that once you buy them, you own them. This feature is valuable, especially for smaller businesses or companies looking to save money. You don't need to pay a monthly fee to Cisco, HP, Aruba, or any other vendors. Ubiquiti UniFi Switches are really easy to do firmware updates.

    What needs improvement?

I'd be willing to pay more for Ubiquiti UniFi Switches if they had some better support options behind them. When something goes wrong in an enterprise application, you need to be able to get a hold of someone. If Ubiquiti UniFi Switches had some live support instead of community support, that would go a long way.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used Ubiquiti UniFi Switches on and off for the last eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate Ubiquiti UniFi Switches a nine out of ten for stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Ubiquiti UniFi Switches' scalability for layer two switches is as good as Cisco or HP switches.

I rate Ubiquiti UniFi Switches a seven out of ten for scalability.

    How was the initial setup?

I rate Ubiquiti UniFi Switches a seven out of ten for the ease of its initial setup.

    What about the implementation team?

Ubiquiti UniFi Switches' deployment is pretty quick. Having two people is helpful, but typically, a single person is enough to deploy the solution. The people deploying the solution would have to be at least above entry-level network engineers. Anyone can plug a network cable into a device, but configuring and working it within UniFi's scope, the LAN setup, and security would require above-entry-level network engineers.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution's pricing in the marketplace would probably be about three out of ten. There are some cheaper products out there, but they're definitely cheaper. Also, there are more expensive products that aren't better than Ubiquity.

You pay for the name when you get beyond the UniFi product line into products like Cisco and Aruba. Users choose the other products for their live person support, but most of it is the name.

What other advice do I have?

I've used Ubiquiti's layer two switches. They have an enterprise version layer three that I've not gotten my hands on yet.

The same people who set up the solution are needed to monitor it. It doesn't require a lot of maintenance once they're up and running.

Overall, I rate Ubiquiti UniFi Switches a nine out of ten.

Very reliable and stable with a straightforward setup
    Pros and Cons
    • "The solution is very reliable and stable."
    • "The solution needs to improve its documentation because it is quite poor."

What is our primary use case?

Our company uses the solution for logistics scanning in warehouses. We have 200 users across logistics staff, technicians, administrators, and directors.

    What is most valuable?

The solution is very reliable and stable.

    What needs improvement?

The solution needs to improve its documentation because it is quite poor. There isn't much available on the internet so we work through fixes on our own.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for nine years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is very stable so stability is rated a nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable so scalability is rated an eight out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

We have not needed technical support.

    How was the initial setup?

    The setup is straightforward.

Configurations take a couple of hours to a couple of days depending on the customer's environment. We use Ubiquiti Clarity which makes it easy to adapt and configure access points.

    What about the implementation team?

We implement the solution for customers. One staff person is dedicated to rolling out monthly updates.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The warranty is very short at one year. If the solution breaks after that, you literally have to throw it out. The solution needs to offer three-year or limited-loss warranties.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend the solution and rate it an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

    On-premises

Easy to set up and use with a great GUI
    Pros and Cons
    • "Great information on the graphical interface."
    • "Functionalities can change quite quickly without notice."

What is our primary use case?

We are a training center, so we cater to trainees and students. We are customers of Ubiquiti.

    What is most valuable?

The information on the graphical interface is great and I like the ability to access it from anywhere. It's fairly easy to set up, use the product, and adapt it to Ubiquiti.

    What needs improvement?

I've found that sometimes when you update products, it's easy to miss some functionality that's been added. It can be something crucial that they suddenly change.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    The stability is good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is very scalable. Our user numbers range from 10 to hundreds, depending on the number of trainees we have at any one time.

How are customer service and support?

I haven't required any technical support.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I previously used Cisco and Hewlett Packard and many types of switches throughout the years. Ubiquiti has a good graphical interface and it's easy to use. It's best suited to my needs.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is relatively straightforward. Deployment takes around 30 minutes and it was done in-house. There's no real maintenance, it's just a matter of checking frequently for updates.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

You pay for the product, not for licensing. The cost depends on the kinds of switches you're using.

What other advice do I have?

My only advice is to read the documentation before you update.

I rate this solution eight out of 10.

Great for small and medium business with single-pane management and good pricing
    Pros and Cons
    • "The value here with using the Ubiquiti products across the board is that they're almost all single-pane management and the single-pane management is included. It's a huge benefit."
    • "The support is pretty much email-based and that's horrible for an enterprise product. I can't call anybody right away."

What is our primary use case?

We tend to use the solution when clients are not willing to spend money for Meraki or Aruba. We use them as switches.

The basic use case is going to be an office with as many as 100 users. I position them to have one access point cover 150 to 200 square feet or as much as 350 square feet - depending upon the height of the ceiling. It's usually in an office scenario. Whether circular or flat, they do really well facing down, which means you want to put them up top. If that's the use case, you put them on the ceiling.

If I have a situation where the clients don't want to put it on the ceiling, I'll use the Access Point Flex HD, which is circular and I can place that on a desk or on a shelf or someplace and hide it.

    What is most valuable?

The value here with using the Ubiquiti products across the board is that they're almost all single-pane management and the single-pane management is included. It's a huge benefit. If you go with other brands and you have to pay extra or pay an annual fee to use it, there's a huge cost difference between let's say a Meraki Solution, which I would say for an enterprise is much better. If I have 20 sites and I'm doing hundreds of access points, I'm going to go to Meraki as already I have a budget. This is a bigger enterprise.

This solution, however, is tailor-made to a small and medium business that may have three or four locations and you can manage it from a single point. I can either contract with a company that manages my portal for $10 a month. Or I can do it at Amazon or Google Compute, et cetera, or just in a cloud scenario. It's a really flexible solution and it's very cost-effective.

It's possible to scale the product.

    What needs improvement?

The support is pretty much email-based and that's horrible for an enterprise product. I can't call anybody right away. I have to go back and forth with emails if I have a problem. The guys that work for me when we have to return them, generally speaking, we don't have issues, however, at $179 each, at some point, we don't waste time, we just buy another one. Then we'll get a few of them together and then we'll send them back due to the fact that it's easier to do it that way.

Overall, they are hard to source.

They don't play nice with vendors. They want you to buy it off their website. The website is often out of stock. It's really bad from that perspective. If I'm doing a project, I don't want to have to maintain a stock of equipment. I want to be able to buy it from a vendor right away.

The stability is not the greatest.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for more than 12 months. I've used the product for a while.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I've had stability issues. It's not the most stable solution. Meraki is better.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is there. For example, if the company has five warehouses across the country and I want to deploy long-range access points, across the different warehouses, I can have them delivered, installed, and boom, I'm done. We just do that and it's great. If I want to manage them, I add them all to my portal. I can update them all in one shot. I can apply the security, I can do WPA and if I'm doing WPA2, I can change it to Radius. There are so many features there and it's easy to manage. If I want to replicate the installation, it's really easy. I just copy. The site's easy to build and it takes 10 minutes. It's much easier than Aruba, which has more steps.

How are customer service and support?

They only offer email support. They need to have real phone support to avoid having to go back and forth over long amounts of time.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I'm also familiar with Meraki and Aruba, which are a bit more expensive, and may be better for larger setups. With Aruba, you do get better coverage than Meraki, however, it is on the more expensive side.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy, however, it's not enterprise-grade.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is very good and it's a great option for small or medium-sized organizations. It's around $179 a device.

The issue is you can't buy them easily. That's the biggest downfall of Ubiquiti is they don't have a good supply chain and maybe that's indicative of the times. However, even prior to the coronavirus, the pandemic, we still had trouble getting them.

What other advice do I have?

Most of the time I'm going to go with the Pro switches - the PoE 48 port switches, or, if it's a smaller branch office and they only have a few users, I do the 24 ports. I use the long-range Wifi 6 ones, or the short, the regular Wifi 6 ones, which they call the Wifi 6 Light, as well.

Some of the time, depending upon the aesthetic, or the type of office, they don't want to put anything on the wall or in the ceiling. Therefore, I put there what they call the APUI. It's not the Wifi 6, however, it's pretty good. I'm trying to stick with Wifi 6 as I'm getting the best throughput pretty much throughout whenever I use it. There's an access point called the Access Point Flex HD which is the one I really like.

I'm neither a reseller or a partner with Ubiquiti. When I represent my clients, I give the clients some options. Sometimes they say, "We want to go with Ubiquiti." Or they want to go with Meraki. I don't make money on the sale of the equipment for the simple reason I don't want to be connected to one vendor. If I represent that vendor, that means I'm going to basically push that vendor. I don't want to do that. I want to give the client the best solution for them.

I'd rate the solution at an eight out of ten.

Helps to support clients remotely without onsite visits
    Pros and Cons
    • "We have integrated the tool for PoE switches and non-PoE switches. Its most valuable feature is SD-WAN. UniFi SD-WAN can access all statistics and performance data in one interface, enabling us to support clients across different locations remotely. Additionally, we can even restart devices remotely through the UniFi SD-WAN."
    • "The product needs to improve its pricing."

What is our primary use case?

We use Ubiquiti UniFi Switches internally and as part of our managed client service.

How has it helped my organization?

The main benefit we've experienced is the ability to support clients remotely, especially since our clients are spread across the Philippines. We no longer need to visit sites in person; instead, we can manage everything remotely using SD-WAN. Even simple tasks like restarting equipment can be done remotely.

    What is most valuable?

We have integrated the tool for PoE switches and non-PoE switches. Its most valuable feature is SD-WAN.  UniFi SD-WAN can access all statistics and performance data in one interface, enabling us to support clients across different locations remotely. Additionally, we can even restart devices remotely through the UniFi SD-WAN.

We no longer need to physically visit sites for troubleshooting as much because issues can often be addressed remotely.

    What needs improvement?

The product needs to improve its pricing.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the product for five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the solution's stability a nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We use the tool on a day-to-day basis. I rate its scalability a nine out of ten.

    How was the initial setup?

Deploying the solution is easy. We're time-bound for each project, so we don't encounter issues deploying the product. Typically, we can deploy it within one day or even less.

We perform maintenance on Ubiquiti UniFi Switches based on the needs of our clients. Some clients require monthly maintenance, others quarterly, and some even weekly. We conduct checks and immediate replacements as necessary during these maintenance periods.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's challenging to compare Ubiquiti UniFi Switches and other brands directly due to the significant price difference, especially between US brands like Cisco and Aruba versus others. However, compared to US brands, Ubiquiti UniFi Switches are more cost-effective. On the other hand, if compared with brands from China, it might seem expensive.

I rate its pricing as seven out of ten. We compare prices between the store and local distributors, especially for larger projects, and negotiate based on that.

What other advice do I have?

In most cases, we advocate for an end-to-end Ubiquiti product solution. This includes using UniFi switches for various purposes, such as wireless controllers, PoE switches, and non-PoE switches.

The tool's product lines are good. The management tools, including the web app and mobile application, are easy to use. With them, I can support clients remotely and troubleshoot issues. Checking equipment statistics is simple. This flexibility is great for helping third-party clients.

Once installed, it is an "install and forget" device, requiring minimal attention or troubleshooting.

I rate the overall product a nine out of ten. I recommend it. Select the model that fits your customer or client requirements, and you're ready.

I am involved in the tool's design, implementation, and support.
