Are there any differences between the TM1 Express and the TM1 Enterprise?
I know from a licensing perspective one can hold up to 50 users and the other one is targeted to larger organizations with 50 users and above but I'm curious about differences in functionality between the two.
Need help to make a decision into what to purchase.

To better understand the IBM Cognos TM1 license functionality and structure, we’ll break it down into its components. By the way, are you aware that Cognos Express is now using the same EXACT architecture as the Cognos Enterprise version? Even if you are an existing Cognos TM1 owner, keep reading, because seeing the functionality in black and white may make you re-think how your user base really uses the software. You may find that your current license mix is not what you really need going forward.
Cognos TM1 Enterprise (aka Cognos Performance Management)
Required licenses:

IBM Cognos Analytic Server (ICAS): This is a Processor Value Unit (PVU) based license. A PVU is a number that is assigned to a specific processor core type by IBM – what’s your processor’s PVU rate? The ratings generally range from 30 to 120. Its best to check every year with your IT department to determine what processor(s) and how many cores are currently being used, as they may have changed your server. Also, IBM reserves the right to change a processor’s rating. Once you determine the rating of your processor and the number of cores used, the formula for how many PVU’s you need is simply:
Processor Rating * # of Cores Used = PVU requirement
IBM Cognos Performance Management Modeler Authorized User: This license is basically an administrator licenses. It is based on Authorized User (named person) and has all functionality to use the software (ie create, execute, delete, security, etc). You need a minimum of one of these licenses to use Cognos TM1. We suggest that you have at least two, that way someone in your organization is cross-trained to ensure coverage. Also note that you will need a license to cover any and all consultants that are logging into your Cognos TM1 environment.
IBM Cognos Performance Management User Authorized User: This license allows an Authorized User to have Write access to the database (Contribute) and run processes. They will not have the ability to build cubes, write processes or build objects. They are able to update a dimension.
IBM Cognos Enterprise Planning TM1 Explorer Authorized User: This license only allows this Authorized User to have Read access to the database.
IBM Cognos Enterprise User Authorized User: This license allows all the functionality of the IBM Cognos Performance Management User Authorized User AND gives them IBM Cognos BI Analytics User capabilities.
IBM Cognos Enterprise Planning Contributor Authorized User*: Even though this is an older license, it is still very valuable for organizations to keep. This license allows your Cognos Enterprise Planning Contributors to retain access to your Cognos Planning model and gives them access to use Cognos TM1. It also is a very cost effective way to “renew” these users into Cognos TM1 as you migrate from Planning to TM1. If you are still using Planning and your Contributors are not Enterprise Contributors, please contact us to go over your licensing renewal (Renewals@LodestarSolutions.com ). Right now IBM is offering to trade-up your Planning Contributors to Enterprise Planning Contributors at no additional cost per unit than what your renewal would be for your existing Contributors.
Cognos Express for Performance Management (Cognos TM1 Express)
Previously, Express had a slightly different look and would be about six months behind on new functionality. Now they are one and the same, though Express has some size limitations. There still is the limitation of a max of 50 users. However, you don’t have to pay the higher cost of an IBM Cognos Analytic Server license that may have been cost prohibited for smaller organizations.

IBM Cognos Express Connector for Performance Management per Install: This license is in lieu of the Enterprise Analytic Server license and makes Express very affordable.
IBM Cognos Express Administrator Authorized User (min. of 1): This license is primarily for granting Authorized Users access to Cognos TM1. This is not to be confused with the Enterprise version of the Administrator/Modeler license.
IBM Cognos Express Performance Management User Authorized User: In Express, this is your primary user of Cognos TM1. Through security of the Authorized User, you have a lot of flexibility to grant specific users greater responsibility to objects.
IBM Cognos Express Connector for Performance Mgmt for Non-Prod Env per Install*: This is an optional license. However, we do suggest that it is best to have a Non-Prod environment for testing purposes. This comes in handy if you have Cognos Express that includes Business Intelligence reporting.
In short Cognos express is a product grouping of
Cognos BI and TM1. It can only be installed on a single server with limited licensing.
A good product for SMBs. Up until the new release of the product it was a single install with integrated management tool just for express. The recent release is a enterprise install of TM1 and BI with the limitations outlined above.
TM1 enterprise is as it suggests supports larger business (being a memory based olap db), it has a pvu based server license and end user license.
You're right.
Cognos express is meant for users of maximum 50 while Cognos enterprise can go beyond 50 users.
In addition, Cognos express can be hosted on simple server configurations ( 1 - 2 cores ) while Cognos enterprise has to be hosted based on PVU ( 1 core = 7 PVU and more CPU cores required )
Besides, only Congos enterprise is available on the cloud.

terms of functionality, but the TM1 express may not update as fast as
enterprise version. (ie. The latest version of TM1 enterprise may not be
found in TM1 express ).
Yes, the main key difference is licensing and the cost as Cognos Enterprise is targeted for large organization with unlimited user license.
Apart from that technically Cognos Express has limited features compared to enterprise.
In Enterprise we have Framework manager for modeling Transformers for cubes and Report studio/Analysis Studio/Event Studio/Metric studio wherein Express we have only Xcelerator/Planning for modeling and Reporter for reporting.
Cognos 10 Enterprise has a lot of new functionality that is not available in Cognos Express such as Mobility, Business Insight, Active Reports and Metric Studio.
Apart from Licensing restriction, there is no other difference between TM1 Express and TM1 Enterprise.
For TM1 express licensing should be less than 100 users is fine with TM1 Express, and not 50.
There is difference in Functionality.
Cognos Express includes Cognos Business Intelligence (Reporting Solutions)
and functionality of Cognos TM1 ( Planning and Forecasting). It targets
small scale companies.
Cognos TM1 is just for Planning and Budgeting and targets large scale
companies. If want to use TM1 cubes for reporting you need to have Cognos
BI Server to installed.

The OLAP engine provides the same functionalities and capabilities in both.
TM1 Express is for a max of 50 users whereas TM1 is for greater number of users.TM1 Express also contains a bit of Cognos BI (BI portal, report studio, analysis studio, query studio etc) that you don't receive with Enterprise TM1, in this second case you have to buy Cognos BI separately.
Since TM1 10.2 there is no difference in functionality between the Express and Enterprise versions. It is only the number of users and the server size. For Enterprise IBM uses the PVU model to determine price. For Express it is a connector for the server. The same install is used for Express and Enterprise.
We were looking at using TM1 but decided to go with Qlik instead, so I really cannot be of much help on TM1 questions.
Outside of the 50 user license limit there are some tech limitations.
-Windows only -Single Machine -Designed to support max number of users on a
system under $560PVU's. (PVU's calcs can be confusing but it basically
means there is a limitation on the horsepower for this) -Does not include
our Excel add on-CAFE. Can be used w Xpress, just not included in the
bundle. -Turbo Integrator- no connection to SAP, packaging connector or
other OLAP.
One major difference is the price of course. While the express will suffice for the most of the enterprise requirements, IBM claim that the functionalities like mobility, Business Insight, Active Reports and Metric Studio are in the enterprise edition are not available in the Express edition. My suggestion is to review your requirements to see if the express will do the job. If in doubt and cost saving is essential, go for the express edition and ask what it will take to upgrade to the enterprise edition if needed in the future.

Well, the key difference is at the scalability where express can only be installed on a single machine while enterprise can be deployed on multiple machines. Functionalities are largely the same across both versions.

2. Will new Watson deployment, if any, would be different between express and enterprise version
