Our experience with Fortinet FortiGate has been almost entirely positive. It is a powerful firewall with many extra features. Besides basic firewall functionality such as anti-malware, web filtering, and intrusion prevention, it includes SSL inspection, threat protection, and network segmentation. It also integrates well into our multivendor environment. While other NGFWs take all your CPU power to do their job, Fortinet uses module chips that give you low latency.
Some may say the price tag is a downside, but I’ll say FortiGate is cost-effective for all the features and powerful technology it offers. The user interface is friendly, and it is easy to create and manage security policies. It needs improvements, though - the SSL offloading functions and the CLI command line can be cumbersome.
We researched SonicWall TZ before choosing FortiGate. SonicWall is a more modest NGFW that provides all basic next-gen firewall capabilities. Geared to smaller companies, it has excellent traffic inspection and filtering, including geolocation filtering. It is also a more affordable option than FortiGate. The downside is that logs and reports are not detailed, and while cost-effective, we found the subscription price model too complex and were afraid costs might balloon.
Conclusions
SonicWall, in my opinion, is more like an entry-level NGFW, best suited for smaller companies. FortiGate is a complete solution that can be scaled from medium to large enterprises.
