As a reseller company for Akamai, my typical use case for Akamai Edge DNS is its distribution worldwide, providing DDoS attack prevention which is crucial in current times.

I recommend Akamai Edge DNS because it is distributed globally and prevents DDoS attacks. It also supports 100% availability, meaning I can assure my customers that their DNS will never fail. Akamai Edge DNS is optimized for low latency DNS responses, DDoS protection, traffic management with intelligent traffic routing, and load balancing. The integration was seamless, especially with CDN services, which is required by most customers.

For user experience, Akamai Edge DNS should allow notes to be added for each record, as this is something Infoblox supports. Without notes, managing changes in DNS records can be difficult, especially for large companies with over 1,000 records, as they may not know who requested changes without proper documentation. I requested this feature two years ago, but it has not been added yet. Akamai Edge DNS could also improve its AI capabilities.

I have been using Akamai Edge DNS since January 2023.

Akamai Edge DNS is highly stable because of the global infrastructure, and I rate it ten out of ten.

Akamai Edge DNS has high scalability. I can scale up and down, and it supports both on-premises and global Cloud networks, depending on customer preference.

Infoblox is another solution I’m familiar with, allowing users to add notes to DNS records—something Akamai Edge DNS does not offer. However, Akamai Edge DNS is integrated into its broader CDN and security solutions, providing additional benefits related to performance optimization and security features

I recommend Akamai Edge DNS and rate the overall solution a ten out of ten. Akamai Edge DNS should improve its AI more to enhance the product's capabilities.

I have experience with all Akamai products because I use all of them, including Edge DNS, API Security, and App and API Protector. I use Akamai Edge DNS to protect against DDoS attacks and to enhance the performance of our DNS zones across various industries, including financial, healthcare, and education. The high availability of Akamai Edge DNS is impressive due to their numerous POPs, which help in supporting all attacks, including DDoS counterattacks. It offers scalability, which allows me to improve and manage various DNS zones efficiently. The deployment process is very easy and straightforward for our organization. Akamai provides support in Portuguese, which is crucial for me.

The only area that needs improvement is the pricing for DNS zones. The price is higher than competitors, and Akamai should offer a better pricing model.

I have used Akamai products for about five years.

The pricing of Akamai Edge DNS is higher compared to competitors, which charge differently based on zones and rates. Akamai should consider revising their pricing model for DNS zones.

Cloudflare, Amazon Route 53 and Google Cloud DNS 

I would rate the overall solution as nine out of ten. I recommend Akamai Edge DNS because of its high availability and its crucial role in protecting DNS zones against DDoS attacks. It is the first step in safeguarding your infrastructure.

Some of the use cases we looked at are site forwarding for the root domain to another record so we can maintain control of its overall management.

We can maintain control of the configuration, and it seems to be covering the use case that we need.

The solution has a fairly complex setup with our cloud vendors, including Microsoft, Salesforce, and Oracle.

On a scale from one to ten, where one is difficult and ten is easy, I rate the solution's initial setup a five out of ten.

Overall, we took three or four weeks to deploy the solution. Five to six people from our infrastructure team, security team, and architects working on the application were involved in its deployment. Our infrastructure team keeps an eye on things and maintains the solution.

Since Akamai is the industry leader, I imagine the solution would be a little more expensive than some other vendors.

Integrating the tool into our existing network's architecture is a matter of redirecting from the Akamai instance over to a different cloud solution. Our security team is happy with the solution's infrastructure. Some security policies we have with Akamai control the overall configuration there.

I've always been impressed with Akamai's overall approach and their suite of offerings. It's definitely a key player in the industry.

Akamai is generally pretty innovative in terms of technologies, security level, web application firewall, and bot management. I can't really compare Akamai Edge DNS with other vendors, but I know Akamai does a good job. Akamai Edge DNS is a useful component in our infrastructure, hosting, and application side. I think it's just one of those must-have things.

I think Akamai has some of its AI technologies plugged into the overall ecosystem. I haven't read up on it lately, but I'm sure it has some kind of offering for adapting to some of the attacks and keeping track of all the approaches.

Akamai is a good vendor that comes up with a lot of innovations to protect against troublesome actors such as bots, hackers, and different kinds of attacks. They generally provide performance hosting and the Edge service to make the user experience for a site perform well and be efficient.

Overall, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

There is not much of a big use case related to the solution in our company. In our company, we have the DNS for all the domains configured in Akamai Edge DNS. The only use cases I can see with Akamai Edge DNS are to make an MX record, dns.exe, CNAME record, or a PTR record.

The most valuable feature of Akamai Edge DNS stems from the fact that it has its own independent protocol for CDN, which ensures that the DNS part is safe and secure. With Akamai Edge DNS, it is easier to update records, something that is easy for any of the providers, but I can't say that only Akamai specifically offers such features since every other DNS provider now makes an update in DNS tasks.

One thing that I wanted and was expecting from Akamai Edge DNS was CNAME flattening. CNAME flattening is a feature that Akamai does not support. Apart from Akamai, the other DNS providers support CNAME flattening.

CNAME flattening is basically a feature to give you a short summary wherein your naked domain or naked record has CNAME associated with it. Ideally, only subdomains can have a CNAME as per the RFC protocol, but for special cases, if you want your naked domain or top-level domain to be associated with a CNAME instead of an IP, you can do it with CNAME flattening. In a way, it is good that Akamai doesn't have CNAME flattening and follows RFC protocol. It is important to consider that there are many use cases where it could have been easier to deal with them if Akamai had the feature named CNAME flattening. I would also like to see something like APEX's sentry function in Akamai Edge DNS.

I have been using Akamai Edge DNS for almost three and a half to four years. I am a customer of Akamai.

It is a very stable solution since it has a security feature that allows you to recover zone files if you accidentally delete them.

I can't measure the scalability of Akamai Edge DNS, but if you consider the part of adding entries, it is a scalable tool. As far as the count of the entries that can be made using the tool is concerned, it is a very scalable product.

A lot of people in my company use Akamai Edge DNS. Even people from other teams in my company use Akamai Edge DNS, and they can get access to the product to work on it on their own while making some DNS entries, for which they need not depend on me. Around the team of 20 people in my company use Akamai Edge DNS.

The solution's technical support is much better than the other products in the market. I rate the technical support an eight out of ten.

The product's initial setup was easy. The product's setup phase was already completed even before I joined my current organization. Currently, I need to manage Akamai Edge DNS, which includes adding and deleting entries and maintaining zone files.

The solution is deployed on the cloud services offered by Akamai.

I would only recommend someone use Akamai Edge DNS only if they are already using Akamai CDN. If you use Akamai CDN, then it is better to use the DNS services associated with Akamai, and it also allows you to use the other services associated with the brand. If you only plan to use Akamai Edge DNS, then I would suggest you opt for cheaper alternatives available in the market. If you only plan to use Akamai Edge DNS, then it is an expensive product when compared to the other options available in the market.

Considering that Akamai Edge DNS has provided me with all the DNS facilities apart from CNAME flattening, which is a problem because of the protocols followed by Akamai, I rate the overall product a nine out of ten.
