We are using Huawei OceanStor Dorado for Hyper Metro and under Datacore products and some Sunpro products.
The fast performance and reasonable pricing of Huawei OceanStor Dorado are the main reasons we sell them.
Some customers have reported not understanding how the immutable part can be unlocked. From my perspective, it's not a security problem.
We have been using Huawei OceanStor Dorado for about ten years now, since 2014.
We don't have any problems with Huawei OceanStor Dorado, so it is a good product.
Huawei's technical support in Romania for Europe is good and I rate it nine out of ten.
Positive
The initial setup is very easy. It's just a matter of starting them and putting in the IP address.
Usually, only one person is needed to fully implement Huawei OceanStor Dorado.
From the customer's point of view, Huawei OceanStor Dorado is expensive. They are, however, available and reliable, so it is a good investment.
The products they offer are quite cheap. However, I do not have much information about licensing since we don't buy them directly.
Pure Storage was evaluated, and for some customers, its interface is easier to use. However, Huawei is a good product too.
I'd rate the solution ten out of ten.

We use Huawei OceanStor Dorado for our stack. Dorado storage administration facilitates tasks such as deploying and automating migrations and applications, securing snapshots, and utilizing hyper CDP properties. It also provides line support from Broadband SN to back up data from storage tools. Additionally, we use it for domains like EMC and Partridge Systems.
Huawei includes features for file servers and file services. It offers ransomware protection for files stored on servers. However, it does not support blocking websites.
Data processing is the most important feature.
We are using Huawei OceanStor Dorado, which employs SSD storage on the hardware side. No reported performance issues or improvements are required for our systems because all of the systems run on memory on the host side. The Oracle data and Oracle virtual machines also operate from memory. Additionally, we use Oracle for patching systems, with all data residing in memory. There is some latency during backup times, typically at night, but this is acceptable for us. These latencies occur outside of office hours, so they do not impact our operations during normal times when there is no noticeable latency.
Huawei should provide new security features, such as blocking ransomware sites and improving detection. Currently, we receive updates from HQ in China; there are instances where hackers may infiltrate network sites and encrypt our data. However, the system lacks a feature to block these sites or secure the data.
I have been using Huawei OceanStor Dorado for one year.
Every day, we are getting support.
Positive
The initial setup is straightforward and takes one month to complete.
The solution's pricing is average.
We have three systems on Dorado for different authentication types. For example, there are five thousand available systems for file types. Additionally, Oracle storage machines support another five thousand systems for this application. Furthermore, networking, logging, QRadash, IBM QRadash, and other data applications are supported on roughly three thousand systems. There is no need to scale up for performance, which is acceptable for us now. However, it may be required in the future, but there are no requests for it.
Smart migration means, for example, old storage to new storage data migrations. Huawei has an integrated source for Dorado storage. For instance, if there is a one terabyte load, it needs to be migrated to Dorado using Smart Migration. The Smart Migration tool runs perfectly for migration tasks. Migration services are perfectly usable on Huawei or other platforms.
Smart Migration, developed by Huawei, is an exceptional feature. This software facilitates data migrations efficiently, even when dealing with large volumes of data, such as terabytes. Smart Migration reduces the time and effort required to migrate data from old storage systems to new ones, making it a highly valuable tool for managing extensive data migrations.
Overall, I rate the solution a ten out of ten.

We also did a three-month POC with Huawei's Dorado 8000 for database purposes, specifically Oracle and some trust application teams.
Two things really stand out for me. First, there's group cloning, which is very nice. It simplifies managing multiple clones across the group.
Second, Huawei's multi-controller architecture with load balancing is a good part. Unlike other storage systems that rely on active-passive or active-active controllers, which can experience downtime during maintenance, OceanStor Dorado supports more than two controllers, allowing for seamless maintenance without impacting I/O operations.
We even tested this by pulling out a controller during peak I/O time, and the system handled it flawlessly – no errors, no disruptions. That's simply unmatched in my experience.
The built-in reporting tools need some enhancement. However, R&D is really good because we have one of the issues reported to them. They released the patch within one week.
We used it for three months in 2023.
I would rate the stability a ten out of ten.
I would rate the scalability a ten out of ten. During our POC, we had 20 to 22 end users using this solution and performing different tests. We didn't use it in any production environment. So, only a few IT people engaged with it in our company.
We used it daily.
The customer service and support are good.
Positive
We had limited experience with IBM. We had IBM FlashSystem 9100 NVMe. We had a three-month POC around 2016.
The initial setup is easy. I would rate my experience with the initial setup a nine out of ten. It took us one hour to deploy it.
Huawei directly engaged with us.
We saw ROI in terms of both money and time saved. It is worth the price.
There are fewer issues, too. For example, with Hitachi storage, I had to take downtime for code updates because I had certain sensitive applications requiring uninterrupted I/O. During a Hitachi microcode upgrade, failover to the second controller caused a small glitch that brought down the cluster. But with Huawei's multiple controllers, that's not an issue.
So, the multiple controllers keep the cluster up even during updates. They also use mesh connectivity and load balancing for extra stability.
The pricing is not cheap, but it's attractive. And the pricing is flexible, too.
I would rate the pricing an eight out of ten.
We tested with NetApp and Pure Storage's PowerMax and Pure Blade. Compared to other vendors, Huawei stood out. They're very supportive and have an amazing on-site presence.
We screened most of the leading products. We did technical evaluations of last year's NetApp, Dell, IBM, and all the major storage vendors.
It's the best solution. Overall, I would rate the solution a ten out of ten.

The most valuable features of the solution are SmartMigration, HyperReplication, HyperSnap, HyperCopy, HyperClone, SmartPartition, and SmartCache.
We are using the solution for some banking customers in India, which requires high IOPS (input/output operations per second) and performance, low latency, and good redundancy. They use the solution's OLTP for daily transactions. The solution is working with high redundancy, high availability, and reliability.
Other Huawei mid-end storages, like 5600 and 5500, are very easy to use. Engineers with two to three years of experience with Huawei will find that Huawei OceanStor Dorado is a bit complicated to use compared to other Huawei storages. Unlike other storages, you cannot configure the disk domain and storage pool in Huawei OceanStor Dorado.
I have been using Huawei OceanStor Dorado for the last six years.
I rate the solution a nine out of ten for stability.
I rate Huawei OceanStor Dorado an eight to nine out of ten for scalability.
The solution's technical support is good and fast. If we have any critical issues, the Huawei engineer will resolve them on a call within 10 to 20 minutes.
Positive
On a scale from one to ten, where one is difficult and ten is easy, I rate the solution’s initial setup ten out of ten.
The solution's deployment is very complicated. It will take a total of one and a half days to deploy the solution's 18800 version. We need to plan where to get the power and check the prerequisites, like the cooling power.
We deployed Huawei OceanStor Dorado in our data center. Around 10 to 15 people are required to unbox the solution and install it by labeling, cabling, powering on, etc.
We are using the 18800 and 5500 versions of Huawei OceanStor Dorado.
Huawei OceanStor Dorado has an inbuilt HyperReplication feature and a consistency group feature. We have two sites, one in Mumbai and the second more than 600 kilometers away from Mumbai. We use the solution's HyperReplication feature for high availability.
Overall, I rate Huawei OceanStor Dorado ten out of ten.

Our primary use case for the solution includes deployments in the financial services industry (FSI), public and private sector.
The platform's most valuable features are competitive pricing, high I/O performance, and support for NVMe disks. Its impressive speed and functionality make it a cost-effective choice with top-tier performance.
The product's current pricing model involves over 12 different licenses, which can be complex. Simplifying the process would enhance the overall user experience.
I have been working with the Huawei OceanStore Dorado for several years.
The product is stable.
The platform is highly scalable, accommodating environments from 40 to 50 terabytes without issues.
The support team is responsive and effective in addressing any issues that arise.
The initial setup of this solution was straightforward. It generally takes about three to four hours for initialization.
The implementation was carried out with an in-house team. Two people were involved: one for cabling and rack mounting, and the other for deploying the solution. The process was handled efficiently.
The product's cost-effectiveness, including after-sales expansion, has proven it more affordable than other brands.
The solution's licensing structure needs improvement.
We evaluated other options including those from Dell EMC. Later, we chose Huawei OceanStor Dorado for its favorable balance of features and cost.
I rate the product a nine out of ten.

The product offers good performance. The functionality is quite the same as ONTAP, which is known for its ability to address business continuity.
The performance is equivalent to other high-end storage systems, and it is easy to deploy and administer.
The only thing holding Huawei back is the backlash it is facing due to the political tensions between the United States and China.
Customers are hesitant to purchase Huawei products simply because of the negative publicity the company has received. So, there is a significant challenge for Huawei in the face of competition from NetApp.
In the future, I would like to have French-speaking support.
Huawei OceanStor Dorado's biggest weakness is its lack of cloud integration. This thing is a big lag for Huawei because it's mostly on-premise storage, and they don't have the availability to put the data in the cloud like we have the ease of use of NetApp.
And you administer your solution from on-premise to the cloud from the single pane of the window and from one point though. So, and that's something that Huawei doesn't have.
This is a mandatory feature for modern storage systems, and I am surprised that Huawei OceanStor Dorado does not have it yet.
I have been working with this product for one and a half years.
It might be difficult to have some support in French with Huawei. We have local support, but it is not French-speaking people.
If you would like to call the support for the third level of support, everything's gonna be in English. And sometimes there are some Chinese people that are speaking English and sometimes it's not really very easy.
So sometimes we have to come back to rephrase things. To be sure that we understand what the support said.
So, there is room for improvement here.
We also sell some HPE and Dell storage, but for me, Dell and HP are mostly just for hyper-converged solutions and servers, not storage.
Most of the time, I prefer Huawei for storage, even though they acquired EMC.
I prefer NetApp products, but I mostly go with Huawei when it's not NetApp. I'm not really a fan of Dell Storage and HP storage, particularly HP's Alitra storage.
Alitra has two models, but they use different technologies. The larger model uses FritoBay, but I don't know what technology the other model uses. It's not the same as AFS, though. AFS uses the same software on top for both models, which is a good thing.
I would recommend using this solution. Overall, I would rate it an eight out of ten.
Our company mainly works with large enterprises such as banks, and Huawei OceanStor Dorado is part of our storage services. Our company uses the product's version 8000. Huawei OceanStor Dorado is used for data migration and storage in banks and other industries like telecom and healthcare.
Customers utilize the solution in data center operations by storing the main workloads, applications, production storage, block storage, pilot storage, and storage objects. Huawei OceanStor Dorado also assists users in core applications, satellite applications, business analytics tools, dashboards, BI, and AI-enabled features to get the desired results.
Huawei OceanStor Dorado is equipped with powerful controllers. The solution can handle more than 6.4 million IOPS. Huawei OceanStor Dorado offers great scalability. It can manage multiple protocols, like NAS protocol, SAN protocol and object storage protocol. The product is optimized for high-performance computing along with AI capabilities.
The product should be better aligned with the virtual environments. More protocols and backup features can be added to Huawei OceanStor Dorado. The connectivity of the product can be improved as well.
I have been using Huawei OceanStor Dorado for four to five years.
I would rate the stability a nine out of ten. Before adopting the solution, our company carried out extensive diagnosis and stress checks to gauge the product's stability, and positive results were obtained.
I would rate the scalability a nine out of ten. At our company, we have three to four customers for the 8000 version of Huawei OceanStor Dorado, but we are in the process of increasing the count. Our company uses the product for medium and large enterprises.
There are very few specialized service partners of Huawei, and even the official support team has fewer professionals than required. Thus, Huawei OceanStor Dorado needs more dedicated partners in leading countries with high storage consumption rates to provide services, deployment, and support.
Very few partners of Huawei OceanStor Dorado have experience in migrating data to version 8000. The certifications for the end-users need to be improved as well, especially for the large-scale customers of Huawei OceanStor Dorado. I would overall rate customer support a six out of ten.
The support provided by IBM or HP for their storage services is more responsive and experienced through trails and testing of products in comparison to support from Huawei OceanStor Dorado.
Neutral
I would rate the initial setup an eight out of ten. The Huawei OceanStor DeviceManager can be used in the deployment process, which acts as a comprehensive tool and provides the deployer with complete control of the hardware. At our company, we experienced a smooth installment process when setting up the Huawei OceanStor Dorado.
The deployment process can be completed within one or two days. Migrating the old legacy data to the new framework is time-consuming, but overall, the product setup is not challenging.
I would rate the pricing a six out of ten. Huawei OceanStor Dorado is more affordable than the competitor solutions. The price of the product depends upon the customer's nature of business, data size, usability, availability and number of product boxes.
At our company, it's a generic SLA that maintains the existing tasks with the same configuration, which has been deployed and running. For the same product services, we prefix the charges for annual support, which is procured through a one-time payment. During renewal, the customer needs to make a yearly payment. There are no additional costs associated with Huawei OceanStor Dorado. An additional fee is charged for upscaling the solution for our customers.
The multiprotocol feature of Huawei OceanStor Dorado has significantly improved storage management for our organization's customers. Before the aforementioned feature was introduced, the product was used to support one single protocol in the legacy storage system.
The solution currently manages object storage using the object data protocol. Huawei OceanStor Dorado allows data storage in one stack; previously, different storage needed to be used for each type of data. Overall, I would rate the product a nine out of ten.
The product operates as a single technology based out of one country, which is China; it can be considered as one of the advantageous factors. The presence of strong controllers, affordable factors and a robust architecture based on the native motherboards, chips, SSDs, TLCs, SLCs and MLCs. For huge storage capacity requirements where other solutions might fail, Huawei OceanStor Dorado is able to serve the purpose.

We employ it mostly in the banking sector. These services are utilized by both cloud providers for their on-premises and data center referral solutions. We have implemented this solution in three banks and one cloud provider.
The primary factors that make Huawei OceanStor Dorado Series highly valuable to us are its competitive pricing, exceptional performance, and stability. What has pleasantly surprised us is the outstanding support we've received. We have direct access to Chinese experts who can work with the support team in China for quick resolution, and this level of support has satisfied us.
The graphical user interface of the management system falls short of our requirements. We often find ourselves resorting to the command line interface, which, although not a significant problem due to our extensive implementations, suggests room for improvement in the GUI. Also, the features for partners are not consistently accessible. One of the key areas that need enhancement pertains to the software procurement process.
We have been working with it for a decade, with a more significant level of usage in the last two to three years.
The solution's remarkable stability is a significant factor in the customer's decision to opt for it.
Scalability is relatively straightforward because this is a unified storage solution. It combines NAS functionality with block storage. If you need more storage space, you can easily expand by adding a new enclosure to extend the existing capacity.
Their customer support is excellent. We have a Chinese representative located in our local Huawei office, which facilitates direct communication with the production R&D team in China. This connection enables us to access level three support directly through this individual.
Positive
The initial setup is a straightforward and easy process. We have a partner with access to Huawei's partner portal, which allows us to download essential documents and resources, including best practice guidelines. This makes the storage system an intuitive and user-friendly solution.
Setting it up is easy because one person can take the box to the customer site, assemble it in the rack, and get it up and running. There's no need for a complex implementation process since we're mainly using this for expanding our existing storage. We can complete the integration in a day, another day for OS configuration, and I'd estimate two to three more days for installation. This process is straightforward, and we don't require weeks for implementation because we're clear on its purpose and don't need special permissions or credentials typical of enterprise storage vendors. In terms of maintenance, we haven't replaced any parts except for the disk in our initial systems. There have been no major issues with controllers or hardware models, and the system remains stable. The software also runs smoothly, with the occasional need to open a service request for things like new patches or software updates, which we perform regularly to keep all our systems in the field up to date.
When it comes to licensing, whether it's on a yearly or warranty basis, all services remain consistent when purchasing storage. In the case of extended service durations, such as three or five years, additional functionalities like compression and deduplication are automatically included within the five-year package.
It stands out as the fastest purpose-built storage solution available on the market, and the pricing is highly competitive and excellent. Overall, I rate it ten out of ten.

The system is simplified to manage and store items.
The most valuable feature for me is that it deduces better, whereby it can be assigned six times the usable capacity, depending on the nature of the data. Especially for environments that store common data with de-commonality, like the Oracle databases, and have standard files across those spaces with efficient storage.
I would like to see them improve their IOPS per second to match their contemporaries in the industry.
I have been working with Huawei OceanStor Dorado for the past five years now.
The stability is good and they should continue to make it better. On a scale of one to ten, I would give it an eight.
When it comes to scalability, as in scale out, we have witnessed several upgrades of capacity on it seamlessly. And when you say scalability, it is either you scale up or you scale out. When you are scaling up, you buy drives, then when you scale out, you buy the processors and engines, whereby you expand. So I think they are doing fine on that too, but they can still look at what their competitor is doing now, and see what they can improve on.
The initial setup is straightforward and I would give that a seven and a half on a scale of one to ten.
The pricing is one thing that works for them. I think their pricing is more competitively affordable than these top competitors. That is what I have observed, their pricing and their market approach in general, they have a market whereby you can pay as you use, and you do not need to acquire upfront capacity that you are not using now.
I would rate Huawei OceanStor Dorado a seven out of ten.

The platform’s most valuable features are speed, accuracy, and encryption.
There could be local support services available for the platform. Additionally, they should provide a bundled license, including all protection and encryption rules.
We have been using Huawei OceanStor Dorado 5000 for two months.
It is a stable product.
I rate the product’s scalability a nine out of ten.
The technical support services need improvement. They should provide local support for software and hardware issues.
Neutral
We didn’t encounter any difficulties with the initial setup, as all the storage systems we are familiar with have similar processes. It involves configuring storage on the network. It requires one executive to implement and three months to complete. I rate the process a nine out of ten.
I recommend Huawei OceanStor Dorado 5000 to others and rate it a nine out of ten.
