What is our primary use case?
It's mainly used in the banking sector. It handles very large datasets and prints extensive reports. We recommend it for that purpose, utilizing features like OBIEE Publisher reports, analytical reports, and others available in OBIEE.
How has it helped my organization?
We work with clients who are mostly using Oracle Analytical Services and Oracle Analytical Cloud. We are able to fulfill their requirements, but in some scenarios, we inform them that out-of-box support is not present for certain features.
What is most valuable?
It handles large datasets irrespective of performance concerns. Other smaller tools in the market, like Power BI, Microsoft tools, SAP BO, ETC., are not able to handle large data. OBIEE has performance issues, but clients are happy with its stability and want some improvements.
What needs improvement?
I would rate its current performance as a five out of ten because a lot of features are missed out in OBIEE. Nowadays, many smaller tools in the market have more features.
For example, in OBIEE, if you have more than three million records in a report, they are not visible in the report itself. Secondly, you cannot export more than one million records.
These feature-based problems affect many clients in Vietnam, Brazil, Sandel, and India. Indian clients choose alternative tools alongside OBIEE. So, they can improve the performance and add some new features. It's a good product otherwise.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I would generally recommend Oracle OBIEE to bigger companies. I would rate the scalability a seven out of ten.
How are customer service and support?
Oracle's technical support usually recommends to upgrade when you contact them for support. They don't focus on fixing the issue at hand or providing guidance on how to do it.
If you are in a lower environment, like one version down, they will blindly suggest upgrading.
Additional patches are given for other Oracle products like WebLogic, databases, and apps. They fix issues and create patches based on client needs. But from an OBIEE point of view, they mostly provide bundle patches of around 5 to 6 GB that need to be applied and tested end-to-end.
It's not an easy way to get small patches, and if issues arise after applying the patches, you have to contact Oracle again.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
None of my clients has chosen Power BIyet. They mostly take Oracle Business Analytics Suite (OBIA), so they are going with OBIEE.
Nowadays, other tools cover everything as well. OBIEE requires WebLogic, so an additional license needs to be purchased. It only supports Oracle databases for installation, which is mandatory. With other tools like Power BI, you can plug in various tools and do the installation.
How was the initial setup?
Integration-wise, it's good with Snowflake, Teradata, and other data sources. It is easy to integrate. But regarding AI, they have introduced some features, like big data, but there are still issues with dragging connections and some feasibility issues.
What was our ROI?
Some reports are tied to OBIEE, as per Indian RBI or US federal guidelines, which makes it mandatory to use. So, it's not that we cannot use OBIEE. But there is a tie-up, meaning the report templates are built by Oracle, and we have to use them.
Smaller tools don't have ready-made templates, so building them takes a lot of time. Therefore, we go with OBIEE due to the time constraints.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The pricing is costly compared to other modules. Clients often find it expensive, and the support as well.
What other advice do I have?
Overall, the product is easy to interact with and handle. End users are happy to make small changes. However, it's not as flexible as tools like Power BI and ClickView, which offer drag-and-drop functionality and are easier for users familiar with Excel.
Overall, I would rate it a seven out of ten. I refer to Oracle Analytics Server because that's what my clients use right now. My other product is Oracle Business Analytics Suite (OBIA). Since some out-of-box reports come with OBIA, I cannot go with Power BI or Qlik Sense because they don't have the option to utilize the standard RPD and catalog. We would have to build everything custom.
For a small bank or entity that doesn't want to spend that much, we recommend smaller tools. Even small banks with less revenue are not able to invest that much money in tools and support implementation. In that scenario, they have to go with smaller tools.
