Sophos Email Appliance [EOL] Reviews

We are a technical services company and we work with many different solutions, including the Sophos Email Appliance. We currently have a couple of customers who use Sophos.

This solution is for the secure delivery of inbound email. There are various use cases including checking email against spam, DNS or configuration related issues, and spoofing-related security issues. It also checks URL in emails, as well as for malicious attachments. All of these things are checked before the email is delivered to the user.

The most valuable feature is the URL relay protection because it protects users from phishing attacks.

The frequency in which this solution receives technical updates should be improved. If they are to be rated as the number one email appliance then they should also be the first to receive updates. It should happen across all of the customers, immeidately.

In the next release of this solution, I would like to see more user awareness, such as information about phishing email attacks that have been prevented.

The baselining and reporting is better with some of the competing solutions.

We have been dealing with the Sophos Email Appliance for more than a year.

This is a very stable solution.

Being cloud-based, the email appliance is very scalable.

I have been part of the implementation team for this solution, and once that is complete, we hand it over to the managed services team. We have never had issues that required contacting support.

We have implemented the Sophos Email Appliance for clients, but we have also deployed similar solutions by Mimecast and Proofpoint. These products have some easy-to-go connectors with Office 365.

The initial setup is straightforward. The time required for setup and deployment is between five and seven working days.

We have our own teams in-house for implementation, deployment, and maintenance.

My advice is that every organization should select an email security appliance, based on their requirements. Even if they are using Microsoft Office 360 Protection, they should still be using a cloud-based email security solution because there are some specific security rules and controls that are applied through these appliances.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Our primary use for the Sophos Email Appliance is messaging security. We implement this solution for our customers.

The interface makes it really easy to administer and configure.

The most valuable feature is the security that it offers.

The reporting functionality is in major need of improvement.

I have been working with the Sophos Email Appliance for more than two years.

In terms of stability, this is a good product.

Our clients are enterprise-level companies and one of them has 2,500 users.

Sophos technical support is good.

The initial setup is straightforward and pretty easy.

We are a Sophos partner in our country and we do the installations of this solution for our customers.

Overall, this solution is easy to handle. It's pretty good in terms of security, and the only place where it lags is in reporting. So, if security is the main concern then this is a product that I would highly recommend, but if reporting is important then a different solution should be considered.

We primarily use the solution to control spam.

The filtering aspect is the solution's most valuable feature.

Sometimes there are issues with exchange and active directory integration. This could be improved.

The solution needs to improve its CPNS.

There are a few issues with integration that need to be addressed; this would help make deployment easier for new users.

The solution is stable. We haven't had any issues aside from some occasional problems with outgoing mail.

The solution is scalable. We have about 400 users on it right now.

We previously used Cyberoam. We switched due to how expensive their licensing was.

The initial setup was complex. In our case, it was because we had to integrate the solution with other applications. Deployment took us about three weeks.

We used a consultant that helped us implement the solution. We were 80% satisfied with their assistance. Aside from getting the email to work, everything else was fine.

We pay a yearly license fee and we're currently on a three-year contract.

We use the on-premises deployment model.

I'd recommend the solution, but potential users should test it before fully implementing it.

I'd rate the solution nine out of ten. The product works, but it's not straightforward to set up.

We primarily use the solution for messaging, security, spam protection, and for phishing protection as well as one-click linking protection.

The ease of use and the security offered by the solution are its most valuable features. It also offers good information protection. 

Occasionally the solution doesn't catch spam mail. They should work to correct this.

There aren't enough advanced settings. They should offer more advanced options.

The solution is stable.

We have 25 people on the solution right now, and we do plan to increase usage in the future.

Technical support is okay. So far I'm satisfied with the experience we've had dealing with them.

We have a Sophos XG appliance and licensing for email, virus, anti-spam, and some other email features. So the primary purpose of the product is our primary use case.

Sophos Email Appliance provides a layer of security that effectively defends against malicious attacks that arrive via email.

The most valuable aspect of Sophos Appliance is just as an anti-spam protection layer. It provides protection from spam, fishing, and from receiving harmful emails that contain things like trojans or ransomware and it checks all attachments safely in real-time. This is most useful for us.

For now, everything seems just fine feature-wise in the Sophos solution. But this impression may be because we are only using the product for six months. It takes time to discover what exists in the program and also for us to find any area to improve in a new version. 

We had some issues early on, like when we could not send to a specific domain even though we were not blocked. The support team checked the problem and solved it. Their response and effort in doing everything are just great and they solve all our problems. That was more due to our setup and inexperience with the product than something that needs to be repaired.

It may be possible for them to improve on the options in reporting. If they can work on the reporting to make it easier to find the problems that need attention for troubleshooting, that would make our experience better. 

If they can improve just these two items that would be significant.

This product is stable and it is good at what it was designed to do. The options are very good, the protection is very good and we are happy with the product as a solution.

We provided Sophos with our requirements and projections and we choose the product that Sophos told us had the capability to meet our needs. We should not have any problem with scalability in the future. We have not had time to worry much about scaling at this point because our situation has not changed significantly in six months.

The technical support is good. We are happy that they are responsive and quick to answer our questions.

We have our own IT department, but we are using it on the cloud so there is nothing for them to really do.

On a scale from one to ten, with one being the worst and ten being the best, I would rate Sophos Email Appliance as a nine. It is not a ten because it is possible that maybe because we are newer users that we don't know what we are missing and maybe later we will find something we need or does not work as expected. Maybe we will find we are satisfied and then learn that there is an even better email protection solution that is more expensive that is newer with different technology and I never heard of it. I don't know. But it is not a ten because I'm not sure it is the best.

We deploy it for a government organization to protect against spamming and the blacklisting of the email server. 

Previous issues were resolved as soon as we deployed the solution. The great thing about Sophos is you can set up for a test environment for one month to help resolve issues.

The solution is very easy to use, especially the cloud version which is very, very simple. There are some good templates already built-in, so you can just select the template, and you will get all the necessary functionality. The only one thing you have to do is point all your traffic to the cloud. 

In the advanced version, you have DLP, Data Loss Prevention, but when you buy the standard version, you don't have it. 

One thing I would change is the number of users in the trial model. When you do the trial, you are stuck with only one hundred users. In my case, we wanted 200 users in the trial. In the end, we had to choose the 100 most important users. They should open up the trial version a bit more so that it's not limited to the number of users on the trial.

The solution is 100% stable. We've never had a problem. We use it ourselves and also install it for our clients. They've never complained about the stability of the solution.

We have about 200 people using the solution currently.

The solution is very simple to set up. You only have to make one to a maximum of three changes. You have to change your DNS. You have to change the outgoing mail server address. And that's all.

As my company is a partner of Sophos, we've got our own version that's not for resale, that we use ourselves. We don't pay for it, and it's a full version with a one-year license. We can renew at any time, and we don't pay as a partner.

The solution, in general, isn't expensive at all, even if you pay. If you have 200 users, for example, you're looking at about 1,000 Euros.

We've used the on-premises deployment model, but we are currently using the cloud.

You don't need to be a very good technician to use the solution. It's very easy to use. On the client-side, you don't have to make very many changes.

I would rate the solution nine out of ten.

Email encryption, because it fulfills our business needs.

Previously, we were sending approvals to our foreign buyers through email, which were easily manipulated by the buyers, creating a lot of confusion for us.

Using this solution, they are no longer able to manipulate emails.

More things need to be integrated into this device, like DLP, so we can have a complete solution in one box.
