This solution is a guardian in helping secure and localize critical data and applications
Pros and Cons
  • "The product is capable of acting in many different ways to help secure architecture."

What is our primary use case?

Endpoint management is used for multiple things. One would be for my VPN gateway. Second, it is used for security. Using it, I do not have to put our data and our applications on laptops or other third-party devices. Data and applications are always in the data center. Endpoint Security is always the guardian and mostly always used to access patient applications — which we need extra security on. Endpoint Security helps us to accomplish those goals.

    What is most valuable?

One of the most valuable features of Endpoint Security would be that all the data is localized in a data center. It is not on the user's device. I can do so many things with it to maintain the security that it is an enhancement to our environment. For example, I can allow BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) and ensure that there will not be any data loss.

    What needs improvement?

At my level, I do not know what needs to be improved for the normal end-user because I do not really log into the devices anymore. But based on our experience — on my people's experience — I do not think there is much more left to be improved for our needs. It really comes down to how good your people are in terms of execution. If they are well-trained and if they know what their stuff, then things are going to be easily.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Citrix Endpoint Management since January. So I have been working with it for roughly eight months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

There are challenges every now and then with the stability, but it is never anything that we cannot fix.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There are a lot of methods for scaling the product in use and functionality. One would be increasing licenses so that you can have more users. In terms of power, there are different scaling methods like vertical or horizontal scaling. Those are things that are easy for us to turn on at any time. We can just contact our supplier to provide us with what we need by asking for it.

Our current users include a group of administrators which is, more-or-less, ten people. These are the ones that actually maintains the system. Then we are talking about 7,000 users who mostly use the product on a daily basis. This would mostly be the doctors and the nurses.

How are customer service and support?

I once called the president of Citrix here in the Philippines and I have direct contact with her at this point if I need it. I also have an account manager with Citrix on the supplier side. He is actually very helpful in escalating certain issues to their engineering team if there is a critical issue.

There is not really anything that needs to be improved in the area of available documentation. I think it is perfectly done: abundant and available.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have used VMware as well. Which product you would use depends on your implementation and needs. For my sake and from the perspective of my business, my use case is very much aligned with what Citrix does well.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was a bit complex. In our case, I have the right resources on our installation team which did the install. Because they are a talented group, it was a simple process for us.

    What about the implementation team?

We planned the deployment properly. We worked with Citrix and the SI (Systems Integrator) who supported us. We actually created a very good plan to have a roadmap to execute the foundation and just do incremental addition of other capabilities. It has become very easy for us to implement nowadays. We do our day-to-day start and end date processes and proceed through the ongoing deployment.

It took us three months to do the foundation of it and now we just continue to integrate the other applications. We took an agile approach where we started with specific foundational implementations. Now we are just integrating one-by-one with the other applications that we already have in the hospital.

We are talking about hundreds of applications so it was not something that would have ever been reasonable to think would occur overnight.

As far as maintenance, it is really built into the daily processes. I do not think it is really necessary to take an intensive maintenance approach. Our team can take care of issues if any arise.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Endpoint Management comes in a bundle of many other products that we bought, I can not say what the exact cost was. Whether it was cheap or expensive is actually subjective anyway. In my opinion, it is actually in a very good sweet spot. It is just in the middle of what I want to spend. It is not too cheap so that it can not do what I need it to. It is not too expensive for me so that it breaks my budget.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

When I was making my evaluation for the solution I needed, the situation was more of an emergency. I looked up reference documents to just tell me which should be in the top 10 or so of this product category. When I saw the Citrix solution was in the mix, it was good because I already had a current relationship with them. I called them up and nearly immediately — within four hours — they were able to fire up a machine for me. It was a snap decision based on availability and my previous relationship with the company, and that is basically what happened in making my decision.

What other advice do I have?

First and foremost, anyone considering this product has to gather their complete use case and know for certain exactly what they really want to do. Based on that, they can align their use-case needs with the different products in the category. From that vantage they can see which of the viable solutions actually address their requirements. The next thing to do is look at the capability to scale in terms of a roadmap. This is not only looking at the number of licenses but the other enterprise-wide capabilities as well. For example, they may need to look at capabilities for doing load balancing or doing VPNs. If a product can do all the things that you need with a simple upgrade of a license or something that is not complicated or extremely costly, then you should also evaluate the product in that light as well.

On a scale from one to ten where one is the worst and ten is the best. I can rate Citrix endpoint management as a perfect ten. It absolutely covers our needs perfectly.

Centralized management for iOS and Android platform devices. It can push the policy and application based on needs.

    What is most valuable?

Centralized management for the IOS and Android platform device. It can easily push the policy and application based on each departments needs.

How has it helped my organization?

Most of the company are concern about information security. Some of the company devices have been stolen or lost. Using the ZDM, the administrators are able to control the device remotely and send us remote wipe command instantly. It also detects if the device has been jalibroken and rooted and to do necessary actions based on the policy.

BYOD is the new player in this arena, and most companies are trying to allowing it. And ZDM can easily manage it to secure the important information of the device. It can also wipe on the Application that been installed from the ZDM console.

    What needs improvement?

Out of the box template policy.

For how long have I used the solution?

    2 years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

    No.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    No.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

    No.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We evaluated some of the MDM products like Good technology, mobile iron and airwatch. Most of the product have the same MDM function but ZDM is much simpler to manage in terms of administration.

    How was the initial setup?

The ZDM setup is quite straightforward. The Zenprise management system is seated in the internal network and we also use the Zenprise SMG (secure mobile gateway) to communicate the device through internet. It is the same setup as the other MDM product, but the Zenprise SMG gives a security feature to control which device is able to communicate to our Email services.

Gave the company the option to implement BYOD for mobile phones, but The MTC was very finicky.

    What is most valuable?

    1. Ease of deployment to end users.
    2. Profile deployment to setup email, wifi etc.
    3. Secure Mail Gateway was very useful for companies trying to control who accessed their email.

How has it helped my organization?

Gave the company the option to implement BYOD for mobile phones. Also helped with companies who were providing phones the capabilities to easily deploy a phone as well as to securely delete the data if the phone went missing or policies were being broken.

    What needs improvement?

    1. The Multi-Tenant component (MTC) was very finicky to get up and running and upgrades was hit and miss. If you were dealing with a single site it was fairly straight forward as long as you rebooted the system before doing any significant changes like upgrades or certificate changes.
    2. With Citrix taking over, the XenMobile name is a bundling of other products (ShareFile/XenMobile Apps, NetScaller, etc) which makes this a very difficult setup in a single environment and impossible to deploy a full "XenMobile" experience as a Manage Services offering.

For how long have I used the solution?

2.5 years. Basically from 2012 to mid 2014.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

As a MTC it was a problem to get up and running initially. It also had a lot of problems with certificates but again it came to being very selective on the trusted root authority.

Single deployment has generally been fine.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The MTC It had undocumented memory requirements so even though we had enough memory for the number of devices, the number of tenants meant we had regular crashes until that was fully realised by their support.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

    No.

How are customer service and technical support?

    Technical support was good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

    Didn't use any other product.

    How was the initial setup?

MTC is complicated as it required a top level service to manage the tenants and that was difficult to get running.

    Single tenant (in-house) was easy.

    What about the implementation team?

    In-house with technical support.

    What was our ROI?

As I said we sold this product as a manage service offering. I'm not sure on the companies return on investment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Unknown setup cost but we spent a lot of hours getting it running.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Back in 2012 we compared this to Sophos offering (hands on). On paper we compared this product to Mobile Iron.

What other advice do I have?

I still think XenMobile MDM is a leading solution for Mobile Device Management but its bundling with the other XenMobile Apps and NetScaller makes it very difficult to implement. You (as a solution provider) need to be a Citrix house to get to the right resources. If you are looking to implement MDM just understand the full solution from Citrix is expensive and complicated. However the basic MDM with Secure Mail Gateway is not nearly as difficult and still provides features that other MDM providers don't.

Provides us with faster communication, but Securing ActiveSync without using a Netscaler would be an improvement.

    What is most valuable?

Receiving corporate email, contacts, and calendar. The ability to lock down and secure the device, and the ability to support iOS, Android, and Windows Phone.

How has it helped my organization?

This product provides our organization with faster communication with the ability to answer emails from a mobile device rather than having to access Outlook on a laptop or desktop.

    What needs improvement?

Securing ActiveSync without using a Netscaler.

For how long have I used the solution?

    2 years and 6 months.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

There have not been any issues with deploying this solution. However we have encountered when a user restores an iOS device either for a new iPhone or existing, the XenMobile profiles have to be deleted and the phone has to be setup again using Worx Home.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have not encountered any issues with stability. But we have seen battery life is slightly drained faster.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have not encountered any issues with scalability.

How are customer service and technical support?

    Customer Service:

    10/10.

    Technical Support:

    10/10.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

    No.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup has always been very straightforward and easy to install updates.

    What about the implementation team?

    We did the implementation in-house.

    What was our ROI?

For BYOD we charged users $50.00 to counter the price of the product and license cost. Also faster communication has added to ROI.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The original setup cost was $1,800.00 plus a new license every year. Day-to-day costs include offsite server and storage.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Yes, we did evaluate other options based off of Gartner reports and off of managements previous used products.

What other advice do I have?

Test, test, test and understand how iOS and Android work at an operating system level. Also create good documentation with screenshots to help the users enroll themselves, empower the users.

Provides us the control we need for BYOD. Can't wait until Android support

    Valuable Features:

Relatively easy for support staff and employees to use and provides us with the control we needed to deploy our BYOD program internally.

    Room for Improvement:

Doesn't yet support Android devices natively, though that is coming.
