Good transparency, increased data visibility, and very customizable
Pros and Cons
  • "The beauty of the solution is that you can customize it quite a bit."
  • "The technical support could be better."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for when the customer needs data governance to establish cases. We're choosing the product in order to meet the requirements of the customer. That includes requirements such as establishing a governance council if the customer does not have one. It's for data management and the solution handles data quality and metadata management, et cetera.

How has it helped my organization?

Before implementing data governance, the customer had a pain point of identifying the data and providing data useful to their business. That was the biggest challenge. There were also many data quality jobs where the customer wanted to find and identify the data in terms of where the data is sitting and who was responsible for it, et cetera. We were able to identify data sources, which applications were available within the organization, the domain level, and more to clarify exactly what was happening, where reports were sitting, who was connected to what, where data was coming from, and more. It also helps clarify job roles and showed access to identify where pain points were to get an overall picture of the data of the entire organization.

What is most valuable?

The ability to pull together data lineage is one of the most valuable aspects of the product.

The transparency was great. the business was able to come in and see the data and what exactly was happening in a way they couldn't before. The company could see job roles, data sources, and policies.

The quality and visibility of the data links are great.

They used to rely on third parties, however, now, for example, they've brought in their own data quality tool.

The beauty of the solution is that you can customize it quite a bit.

What needs improvement?

The technical support could be better.

Previously, it was a challenge to integrate tools like MuleSoft into the product. However, they've gotten better.

There needs to be more security and compliance embedded in the product in the future.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for close to seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is great. I'd rate it at around a nine out of ten in terms of reliability. There are no bugs or glitches, and it doesn't crash or freeze.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is quite good. I'd rate the ease of expansion at an 8.5 out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

We weren't overly pleased with the technical support. They need to provide a better quality of service to the customer.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I'm also familiar with Informatica Axon. I find that it is a little stronger in the data quality department. However, it is not as easy to deploy.

How was the initial setup?

It's not too complex to set up initially. It's pretty easy if you are doing a basic setup. However, it does depend on the client's requirements. You can customize a lot of things, which is great.

What about the implementation team?

We handled the setup ourselves in-house. I mostly did the implementation myself. I have seven years of experience and am quite comfortable with it.

What was our ROI?

We have witnessed an ROI while using this product. The customer typically sees huge returns.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution isn't overly expensive for bigger customers. Typically, the cost is handled by the customer, not me, and therefore iI can't speak of the exact pricing.

What other advice do I have?

I'm not sure which version of the solution we are on right now. We're on the cloud deployment, meaning we are likely using the latest iteration.

I'd recommend the solution to others. It's a straightforward product.

I would rate it nine out of ten overall.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Stable, with no downtime, and is good for lineage, but needs more API-based integrations and an advanced search feature
Pros and Cons
  • "The feature I like most in Collibra Governance is the lineage. It lets me do lineage that you can set up, for example, technical lineage and business lineage. The solution lets me associate the right people with the right assets, so anybody who has to look at end-to-end instances can use Collibra Governance and figure it out, in terms of who to contact, what to do, and where to find what you need."

  • "There's still room for improvement in Collibra Governance. Right now, the solution focuses more on publishing and subscription where metadata is being consumed from all systems and processes within Collibra Governance. I'd like to see more features around external systems that let those systems start consuming or start referring things from Collibra Governance automatically, in particular, more API-based integrations, so the solution can truly work as an enterprise governance tool at the heart of the organization. There have been many cases where business stakeholders feel, "Okay. I'll be doing a manual activity because every time I have to maintain and make sure that the solution is working, for example, ensuring the reporting works, I have to go to Collibra Governance." I want this step taken out of the equation, and it has to be an automatic conversion or automatic notification that something has changed. Scalability also needs improvement in the solution. If there could be some sort of self-service where people can customize the solution a bit more, that would make Collibra Governance better. What I'd like to see in the next release of the solution is an enhanced search feature because it's what users want to use. You want to search for a term and get all details in one go. Right now, if you type a term in the Collibra Governance global search function, it returns a lot of results that you need to know how to filter and what to filter, so there should be automatic filters that give accurate information to somebody who does a search on the solution. I want Collibra Governance to provide a capability where you can search and get relevant information."
  • "Scalability also needs improvement in the solution."

What is our primary use case?

Collibra Governance has many use cases. I'm part of the enterprise data team and I also focus on other types of data enterprise, wherein governance is one of the workstreams. I'm working for a pharmaceutical company, so I try to onboard people on Collibra Governance from various verticals such as HR, vaccines, pharma supply chain, etc. Sample use cases for the solution include data quality for cloud stream software, automated data lineage, and other types of lineage. In general, I'm using it mainly for data governance.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Collibra Governance for two years now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Collibra Governance is a stable solution. It has no downtime or issues, based on my experience.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Collibra Governance is not a scalable solution, and this is one of its areas for improvement. The solution needs more integration, and I'm also looking at how Collibra Governance can be more scalable.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support team for Collibra Governance is very responsive and knowledgeable. On a scale of one to five, I'm rating support a five. My team gets very good support from Collibra Governance whenever required.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup for Collibra Governance isn't that complex. The UI is pretty straightforward and the structure is quite standard, so people can come and map. The main problem my team is facing is working in a federated environment, so every business or every unit you've given leverage designs it their way, and in that way, people can customize a tech model, so you have no control over that. It's more of how people perceive the business, business terms, and business data that varies. I'm struggling to build more standardizations around it, but I have no solution to it yet because, in my company, you don't work like a centralized organization. People research and build designs their way, so at times, this leads to different conclusions, and that's what I'm struggling to solve.

I'd rate the setup for Collibra Governance as three out of five, though I didn't do the setup myself. Another team was responsible for setting up the solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I'm not familiar with the pricing or licensing cost of Collibra Governance.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I've not used any other data governance tool apart from Collibra Governance. I've used a data quantity tool, a data reference tool, and a master data management tool, but not a data governance tool similar to Collibra Governance. In my previous organization, I did governance through files, SharePoint, etc., not a centralized tool such as Collibra Governance.

What other advice do I have?

In the company, there are more than three thousand users of Collibra Governance.

My team has been using the solution daily, but I'm unsure of how frequently it's used by other teams.

My rating for Collibra Governance is seven out of ten.

My company is a customer of Collibra Governance.

The product's most valuable features are cataloging and classification.

What needs improvement?

They could simplify the platform's setup and design process. It requires significant IT involvement and expertise, which can be a barrier for smaller organizations.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Collibra Governance for approximately five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product is stable and reliable. I rate the stability an eight.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The product is scalable, but the extent to which it scales effectively depends on how well it is designed and implemented.

I rate the scalability an eight.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The product's pricing is high, which its comprehensive features and capabilities may justify. However, the cost can be a consideration for smaller organizations or those with limited budgets.

What other advice do I have?

As a data governance advisor, I evaluate various solutions based on their fit for the client's requirements. While I recommend this solution when it meets the organization's needs, there are more than one-size-fits-all solutions.

Effective for data discovery and supports multiple authentication methods, not just username and password
Pros and Cons
  • "The data lineage capability is valuable as it shows how different sources are connected and how data flows, which is crucial for projects like migrations. Moreover, data lineage visualization in Collibra Catalog aids our data governance initiatives."
  • "I'd like to see more integration with other reporting sources."

What is our primary use case?

Catalog is primarily used for metadata cataloging and enriching it with additional information, such as adding business terms. Then, if lineage support is available in the tool, we can link business terms to technical terms.

Additionally, we can store sample data. If there's a client requirement, we can link physical metadata with reports or datasets. This allows users who need access to a particular dataset to obtain it by creating a dataset from the Catalog metadata.

How has it helped my organization?

For data discovery, we create datasets. The most frequently used datasets are featured on the dashboard. Users can create their own if their requirements aren't met by the most frequently used datasets. We also create data requests, and owners can approve these requests, which adds a process layer to accessing particular datasets.

So, it has been effective for data discovery in our company.

I use different functionalities within the tool. I use Collibra Catalog for metadata management or Collibra Lineage for data governance.

Once configured, data in the Catalog will be automatically updated, reducing the need for manual maintenance. So, the automation feature has positively impacted our data management tasks.

What is most valuable?

The data lineage capability is valuable as it shows how different sources are connected and how data flows, which is crucial for projects like migrations.

Moreover, data lineage visualization in Collibra Catalog aids our data governance initiatives. It's very important for identifying impacted reports during updates, making it crucial for decision-making due to its ability to link business and technical terms.

What needs improvement?

I'd like to see more integration with other reporting sources like Qlik Sense, beyond the currently supported ones like Tableau and Power BI.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using it since 2019. It has been a long time.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Collibra updates the job server every quarter, so it's a stable solution that requires quarterly updates.

I would rate the stability a nine out of ten because it's quite good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's scalable. We create different configurations for each data source to minimize latency and ensure efficient data governance. This decentralized approach makes it highly scalable.

I would rate it a nine out of ten because it's quite good. It supports multiple authentication methods, not just username and password. It supports mechanisms like Windows authentication or any other supported source, so there's no issue.

We make it available to everyone in the company. Moreover, most users are on the client side during implementation.

How are customer service and support?

The customer service and support have improved, and Collibra provides very good solutions now. They have a knowledge base that can answer our queries, suggesting solutions before we need to contact support.

How was the initial setup?

The setup is quite easy and takes about 30 minutes to an hour if you have everything you need. Configuration isn't very difficult.

Deployment involves creating a job server in the client-hosted environment and configuring it to connect to all data tools, like MySQL, Oracle, or SQL Server. Then, we establish a connection between the job server and Collibra.

Data governance instances and the job server send requests to the actual data sources. Metadata gathered from the sources is passed to Collibra through this setup.

We're moving towards cloud solutions, so Collibra Data Intelligence is on the cloud. Collibra Edge can be server-based, but the job server can also be on-premises. It supports both setups, but the direction is towards cloud-only solutions.

What about the implementation team?

One person can maintain the solution, and we need one service account for it.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Collibra offers a per-user licensing model.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I would rate the solution an eight out of ten because we can connect to multiple sources or create custom connectors, making it a good solution.

I highly recommend it.

A reasonably stable tool requiring a straightforward deployment phase that ensures a return on investment for its users
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution's technical support is helpful and responsive."
  • "Pricing policy of the product is an area with certain shortcomings that needs improvement."

What is our primary use case?

In my company, we use Collibra Governance for data catalog.

What needs improvement?

Pricing policy of the product is an area with certain shortcomings that needs improvement. I would like to see better pricing in future releases of the product. Collibra Governance needs to develop some new technology, like Atlan, that has been incorporating AI in the automation area of its products.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Collibra Governance for five years. I have ensured that one of my company's customers uses the solution's latest version. My company has a partnership with Collibra.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability-wise, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability-wise, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

Around 30 people in my organization use the solution.

How are customer service and support?

The solution's technical support is helpful and responsive. I rate the technical support an eight out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have probably worked with most of the products in the market related to data governance and data catalog, including products like Informatica Axon. I still do work with Informatica Axon at times.

How was the initial setup?

The product's deployment phase was straightforward.

The solution is deployed on an AWS Cloud, which is a private cloud.

What about the implementation team?

The deployment process is carried out by Collibra Governance's technical team.

What was our ROI?

There is definitely a return on investment from using the product, especially if you associate it with a data catalog tool. The return on investments is in terms of optimizing the process of development, data quality improvement, and having a single repository source of information for the metadata of the entire organization.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I don't know the licensing costs of the product since it is a SaaS solution.

I rate the pricing a three on a scale of one to ten, where one is expensive, and ten is cheap.

What other advice do I have?

The maintenance is something that is carried out automatically by Collibra Governance.

I rate the overall solution an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Private Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Has good workflows and many great features; could be more user-friendly
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution has good workflows and is based on AIML."
  • "Collibra is evolving their connectivity towards all programs across the IT landscape, with good workflows, nine dimensions of data quality, and many features, and it is based on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning so that even if you don't know SQL, you can operate Collibra Data Quality."
  • "The interface is not very user-friendly and can be difficult to navigate."
  • "The Collibra interface is not very user-friendly because it has a lot of features that business users find difficult to navigate."

What is our primary use case?

Collibra is generally used as a data governance tool, maintaining all metadata repositories. For each and every data that has been cataloged in Collibra, there'll be an owner assigned to it, whether it's a subject matter expert, a data streamer, data owner, etc. All the data is catalogued into Collibra. It has a single source of truth for data. I'm a senior Collibra consultant and we are customers of the company.

How has it helped my organization?

We have data that people want to access and that's where Collibra fits in. They provide the SSO authentication so that anyone in the organization using the login can find what they want.

What is most valuable?

Collibra is evolving their connectivity towards all programs across the IT landscape. The solution has good workflows and they now offer nine dimensions of data quality and provide a lot of features. The solution is based on AIML, Artificial Intelligence Machine Learning so that even if you don't know SQL, you can operate Collibra Data Quality. Collibra Workflows, Collibra Data Quality, are two good aspects that I would highlight from Collibra. Governance provides a user access mechanism, where you have all the data assets cataloged in Collibra. Not everyone can access all the data which is where the governance process comes in. They are constantly coming up with new features, and provide a monthly release.

What needs improvement?

The Collibra interface is not very user-friendly because it has a lot of features that business users find difficult to navigate. Anyone using the device needs some knowledge about how to use the tool and it takes a while to access and get used to the interface. I'd like to see them build a simple interface with only four dropdowns in order to get access to the request. If you're using it for the first time, it's difficult.

There are widgets in the dashboard and if they could make it more like a webpage instead of a Word document, that would be helpful. They have alternatives, but it takes a lot of work and even Collibra developers don't necessarily know how it works. Some changes are needed.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is good, I've never felt any performance issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is highly scalable, we have around 4,500 users.

How are customer service and support?

When you buy a Collibra license, they offer some training. If we have any issues, we can have a coaching call with them. In addition, they have a support portal. If you raise a ticket with them, they'll respond.

How was the initial setup?

Collibra provides support to anyone deploying the cloud version and implementation generally only takes a couple of hours. They are also responsible for maintenance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There is a standard license for Collibra Governance and an additional cost for Collibra Lineage and for Collibra Data Quality. Author licenses have a set maximum limit; if you want extra there's an additional cost. That's their marketing strategy.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend going to the Collibra University web portal where you can register and log in. They provide a lot of basic information and the functionalities they provide. For anyone wanting to get into governance you can easily get certified as a Collibra consultant. Collibra has its own product roadmap. They have an ideation platform, where you can suggest ideas and if they get a sufficient number of responses in a particular area, they will add it to their roadmap and work on it. Collibra provides a lot to their customers as well as continually improving the product.

Anyone wanting data analytics uses Collibra. I rate this solution seven out of 10.

User-friendly, easy to navigate, and comes with customizable workflows
Pros and Cons
  • "Workflows is the most valuable feature of Collibra because we will typically use an interface for it and we can customize it as per our needs."
  • "I highly recommend this tool to users who want to see the lineage of their data, including technical lineage and business lineage."
  • "Many other tools like Collibra Governance give you the option to actually see the data in the tool, which is not an option in Collibra."
  • "Many other tools like Collibra Governance give you the option to actually see the data in the tool, which is not an option in Collibra."

What is our primary use case?

Our major use case for Collibra Governance involves maintaining lineage, as well as linking business terms and technical terms together. Then, our use revolves around linking policies with actual data, such that we can create data sharing policies within the tool, storing data and quality results.

I am currently working on about 10-12 projects with Collibra Governance using the latest cloud version. It is available on both cloud and on-premises, but currently all our solutions are moving to the cloud.

What is most valuable?

Workflows is the most valuable feature of Collibra because we will typically use an interface for it and we can customize it as per our needs.

It is also a very user-friendly tool which is easy to navigate and understand right from the start.

What needs improvement?

Many other tools like Collibra Governance give you the option to actually see the data in the tool, which is not an option in Collibra. If you compare it with Alation, which has the compose data option, you can see the data right there.

Perhaps this is a feature they could include in the future, although I'm not sure if it is in their roadmap or not, because it is just a governance tool for storing metadata, and not for connecting actual data. If they could include some type of data viewing functionality, however, I would appreciate it.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Collibra Governance for around six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It has been a stable tool since I started using it, which was around 2015. We have used their cloud version since about 2019 or so, making that two years of stable cloud use, while the on-premises version has also been stable. I believe it has been in the market from about 2008 and they have made many enhancements over time with regard to stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Since our version of Collibra is on the cloud and we essentially only use it as a metadata tool, the best way it can be extended is to increase the cloud database. This is all done by the Collibra team, however.

At the moment, I am working on between 10 and 12 projects with it, so in this sense I can call it scalable.

How are customer service and support?

The tech support is good because they have a dedicated team who will be mobilized to help support you on the aspect that you are struggling with. Usually, you will get a response from a team member who has knowledge of the sort of routine you are asking about, and you will be talking with someone who has good knowledge of the tool. Of course, it may happen that the support team member is new to the job, but they will at least help guide you in the right direction.

There is also a support portal where you can browse and search for articles that explain what you need to know. If you can't find the information you're looking for, then you can just raise a ticket with their support. It is very easy.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

It's a very user-friendly tool and easy to navigate right from the beginning.

We didn't actually need to install anything with the cloud version because the Collibra team maintains the installation and everything related to it. They simply give us a direct URL to access it and the admin team then manages all the other considerations. Usually, the customers buy one, two, or three instances at a time, including instances for QA and development, but the deployment process really depends on the size of the company.

Deployment in general is very easy because they have a built-in migration feature with which we can easily migrate data from one system to another in a direct manner. We can also simply make a complete backup of the environment and then just upload it to another system using the backup option.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Collibra provides you with a license based on the subscription model that you purchase.

What other advice do I have?

I highly recommend this tool to users who want to see the lineage of their data, including technical lineage and business lineage. It is very easy to create lineage views with it, and it supports many technical lineages out of the box.

I would rate Collibra Governance an eight out of ten.

Good data lineage and stewardships but expensive and hard to set up
Pros and Cons
  • "Collibra Governance's most valuable features are data lineage and stewardships."
  • "Using Collibra Governance means that we know the end to the life cycle of data across the team, which provides our data science and analytics team with sample data they can use to make decisions on what to do next."
  • "There are a lot of gaps in Collibra's support and documentation."
  • "Collibra Governance is expensive - I would rate its pricing as one out of five."

What is our primary use case?

Collibra Governance is mainly used as a one-stop solution for data discovery.

How has it helped my organization?

Using Collibra Governance means that we know the end to the life cycle of data across the team, which provides our data science and analytics team with sample data they can use to make decisions on what to do next.

What is most valuable?

Collibra Governance's most valuable features are data lineage and stewardships.

What needs improvement?

There are a lot of gaps in Collibra's support and documentation. In the next release, I would like Collibra Governance to include better integration with data ecosystem tools.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Collibra Governance for approximately a year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Collibra Governance is stable with limited data sizes, but with bigger data sizes, you need to invest a lot in the job servers, which becomes a very costly operation.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Collibra Governance isn't that scalable.

How are customer service and support?

It's very difficult to get support from Collibra.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Previously, we used Apache Atlas and switched because it had very limited features.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very difficult - if you're looking at a high-availability or a production scale setup, you need to be technically sound. I would rate the ease of the setup process as two out of five. Deployment took around six months.

What about the implementation team?

We used an in-house team.

What was our ROI?

Collibra Governance helps our organization, but getting a GMV or dollar value out of it is tough. I would rate its ROI as two or three out of five.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Collibra Governance is expensive - I would rate its pricing as one out of five. There are also additional costs for everything except the basic setup.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated Alation and OvalEdge.

What other advice do I have?

Before implementing Collibra Governance, go through the tool very thoroughly because doing a POC or MVP is fine, but when you're looking at a production-scale deployment, it's very complicated. So explore other tools before jumping in with Collibra. I would rate Collibra Governance as six out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud
