SQL Server's high availability and disaster recovery features work for supporting mission-critical applications, but there is much more to wish for. These features are not quite ready yet, although they do function. However, they could be significantly better. High availability and disaster recovery features should be improved in the next releases. I have noticed that everything could be improved or enhanced in the future, particularly temporal tables and window functions. Sometimes, I believe Microsoft releases features to stay ahead of competitors, but they do not make them feature-rich or feature-complete. They release something to be ahead of leaders and then seem to forget to maintain and upgrade them. I want Microsoft to pay more attention and be more mindful about the things they implement. It is fine to do a first release that works, but you cannot simply abandon it in the following years without service packs and improvements. You must continue to build on features rather than forgetting about them.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable features for us are reliability and performance."
"Ingres is the only database solution that has maintained a level of consistency and integrity about the way users interact with it."
"The deployment of our solution across a number of servers using Ingres .NET has meant that we can protect the database server behind a highly secure firewall and deploy the front end solutions on a normal web server."
"This solution has helped our organization by providing a backbone for our SAP."
"can extract data from the server and store it in a local data source for BI purposes."
"The license fee is very low."
"The best feature in SQL Server is the CDC mechanism for adding data incrementally."
"If we want to expand to other servers and create an extra node, it's expandable."
"SQL Server, as a database, is great, and when it comes to the governmental sector, it is easily dealt with and can handle a big load of data, especially after they added the capability of building a big data cluster from the SQL Server itself."
"SQL Server has a dynamic resource allocation feature that allows disk and memory usage to scale to meet changing database demands, providing better performance and simplifying software management."
"The product's initial setup phase was simple."

Cons

"The seamless integration is a bit of an issue."
"The ability to reset the log file without stopping the DBMS would be helpful for us."
"Indexing, execution plans, and the SQL Server Management Studio performance."
"We need it to support Linux for better troubleshooting flexibility."
"The solution is expensive. The licensing costs are high."
"It needs to be improved to handle big data for large volumes of transactions for big industries. As compared to Oracle Database, SQL Server is not suitable for big data or large organizations where the database size could be more than 100 GB or more. In our country, for a large database and a large volume of transactions, we normally use Oracle Database. Most of the large banks are shifting from SQL Server to Oracle Database because of its slowness."
"The UX design of this system needs improvement."
"Since this is a relational order system, scalability has a limit."
"I would like to see SQL Server add the ability to write to multiple sites or support replication between multiple sites at the transaction level."
"Support could be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The pricing from Microsoft is quite expensive compared to Oracle."
"The SQL server is affordable. I rate the pricing a five out of ten."
"SQL Server's pricing has proven satisfactory for our market range."
"I believe the licensing to be on an annual basis."
"For a brief period, approximately one year before 2018, I had experience working with the open-source version of SQL Server. During that time, I found SQL Server to be the preferred choice, in my opinion."
"The solution is on a pay-per-use pricing model."
