Data Engineer I at a energy/utilities company with 10,001+ employees
Flexible virtual machines have accelerated data experimentation and reduced project costs
The best features that Amazon EC2 offers are the availability and the freedom to work with whatever I want. I can configure simpler machines to conduct quicker tests, or I can configure more robust machines according to what the project needs, including machines with a visual operating system. Regarding this flexibility, it impacts my day-to-day work and the projects I develop in terms of speed. If I want to test a project that has JavaScript with Angular and Node.js and I need to install MongoDB, I can configure a machine quickly, tailored for that, and get the data via API from somewhere. If I had to do this on my company machine, I would have to open a ticket with IT and explain the project. Something I could do in one day through my own processes would take two weeks through the company's procedures. Amazon EC2 has had a positive impact on my organization because its configuration offers more options than other clouds. Especially in the IoT area, we prefer to use AWS rather than Microsoft because of the robustness and security, whether in a gateway that we configure, in a firewall, or elsewhere. We adapted better to Amazon EC2.

Easy to manage, flexible, and has good scaling options
A partner company called Cloud40 helped us with the deployment. It took a couple of weeks for the deployment to happen. The steps we took for the deployment process included research and information planning about what we wanted to do while moving from physical to the cloud. We have used all the hardware and other resources available to make sure of the connection.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The scalability of Amazon EC2 is good. However, the stability can depend on what service I am using."
"Amazon EC2 is really reliable and provides great flexibility."
"The flexibility of the security features is what is interesting."
"The most valuable feature is autoscaling."
"In terms of the EC2 services, it's an amazing product, in terms of the computational power and the flexibility and then the number of features and services they provide, it's awesome actually."
"Scalability, reliability and easy to use settings are essential for our company because the services our company offers to our users require high scalability, and Amazon can offer this type of elasticity with total reliability."
"I'm recommending Amazon EC2 to other people because it's a critical product that has more reliability."
"I believe that cloud solutions are better than physical servers."
"I find the solution's scaling capability to be an important benefit. You can scale it vertically or horizontally, i.e., you can upgrade the hardware or clone the machine. The solution is also easy to manage and flexible. Additionally, you get some layers of security without paying for it."

Cons

"One feature I would request is the addition of metrics related to RAM, as currently, we need to install custom agents."
"One of the challenges is the AMI upgrades."
"Someone accidentally starting an EC2 server could end up costing you notable dollars."
"We found Amazon EC2 to be pricey."
"Price and availability. I think Amazon could offer lower costs for customers who have a high use demand, as in our case."
"The price could be better, and it could be more affordable. Because I run my own servers, the prices are quite high."
"I would like to see improvement in the information available up-front for users around tailoring the package to their actual requirements. At present it can take time to work with the on demand instance until you are used to what features are right for the user."
"Built-in and/or integration with other services to proactively identify potential failures before they occur."
"I have two areas of improvement to comment on. Most of the product names in AWS are not indicative of what they are doing. Moreover, AWS is not organized and you do not have the full platform with you. It is hard to know some AWS services."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It has helped to reduce costs with infrastructure."
"The price is reasonable, but there is definitely an opportunity to lower it in instances which are of a higher configuration, because they have been typically used for the long term."
"The use of Amazon EC2 does not incur any licensing fees."
"I am using the tier three Amazon service. I am not going to use another solution other than Amazon EC2 because here in Pakistan there are some payment issues for solutions abroad."
"We are using a pay-as-you-go model."
"It's competitive but can vary based on instance types and usage patterns."
"There is a license required to use this solution and we pay on a monthly basis."
"For our usage, the cost is approximately $20,000 to $23,000 per month."
"I find the solution's pricing reasonable. You need to pay extra for IP and other miscellaneous costs."
