Starts strong with functionalities but reveals cost limitations
The main challenge with Amazon Elastic Container Service is the significant learning curve. Everything mentioned took months to understand. It is not for the faint of heart. Though they have graphical interfaces and numerous dashboards that help create all the services graphically, learning to use Bash can be challenging. Because these are headless servers by nature, there is no graphical interface. It is not similar to Windows where you can hit the start button and look for your program, or Mac where you can look for programs on your desktop. Instead, users must understand this new paradigm of a Linux headless server, which requires using command-based prompts for builds and development.

Effective cost management achieved with robust storage features but user experience and data management require improvements
HPE Ezmeral Container Platform is not user-friendly and has many parts that are more difficult than Cloudera. It is also a complex solution and has low features for data management. For example, it cannot make a data catalog or process data lineage without third-party support, which increases the cost for development.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We use the product for website and email database hosting."
"Amazon Elastic Container Service serves the function it's supposed to serve."
"The most valuable feature is the volume size they offer."
"The production environment is highly available, which nowadays is a requirement for all of the big companies."
"The product's most valuable feature is service discovery functionality. It is an excellent feature impacting cost reduction."
"The solution has good performance."
"A really good feature of ECS is the integration with AWS services, especially the networking services like Elastic Load Balancer, Service Mesh, and Service Map, which simplifies the service discovery process."
"ECS is flexible and easy to use."
"If customers focus on primary apps or if they are using them for data science, this is a good solution."
"The stability of the HPE Ezmeral Container Platform is good, and I rate it an eight out of ten."

Cons

"Amazon EC2 Container Service's security can be improved."
"In the next release, they could add some customization options for high computer workloads."
"Although I like the per second billing, the cost of it, even if you are being billed per second, is still higher than competitor products."
"It's a complex tool and should be simplified."
"The solution’s UI should be improved."
"For Amazon EC2 Container Service, providing the ability for users to select specific processor, memory, disk, and interface types might be an ideal feature. But, the practicality of offering all possible physical combinations is nearly impossible due to the underlying physical machines. AWS and Azure organize options into groups based on essential components like powerful processors or critical interfaces, considering physical restrictions. While expanding these choices is conceivable, it may not be feasible from a financial and practical perspective. Customers generally comprehend this limitation, as even in their own data centers, exact physical machine requirements are often a result of a combination of factors such as price, availability, and new machine generations."
"The solution must improve backup and compatibility around OS like Windows and Mac."
"The product can become expensive if you don't choose what you want."
"If a customer is focused on process automation or API usage, I would not recommend this solution, but it is good to use for Data Science."
"HPE Ezmeral Container Platform is not user-friendly and has many parts that are more difficult than Cloudera. It is also a complex solution and has low features for data management."
"The modernization in Ezmeral could be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The pricing is good."
"The tool's cost is good."
"Our client is paying between $400 and $500 USD per month for this service."
"Amazon EC2 Container Service is an expensive solution."
"I don't exactly deal with the pricing. We have a separate Infra team that deals with the pricing. They are more into the scalability part. Based on our requirements, the pricing will increase. The automation teams will test some of the benefits to see how can we can optimize the cost. They'll have a security manager connection and some alerts based upon the usage to see how to reduce the building cost based upon the installations."
"The product's pricing is good."
"The pricing of Amazon EC2 Container Service is average."
"Amazon Elastic Container Service's price is good."
