Performance optimization and scaling adaptations enable efficient data management
Amazon Redshift does not work alone and requires integration with other AWS tools like S3 and Glue for a complete ecosystem. They should bring the entire ETL data management process into Amazon Redshift. Either they should move Amazon Redshift under Glue, or Glue should be brought under Amazon Redshift. The initial setup could also be improved, particularly in terms of sizing, as it requires trial and error to get right.

Analytics and data security needs are met but optimization requires improvement
We are using Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse for analytics in my company The solution is used for analytics and it works for our data security needs. We continue to use it with satisfaction. Optimization should be better. The SQLs are sometimes very slow. I also noticed that Java is not…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable feature is that the solution is fully embedded in the AWS stack."
"Setup is easy. It's a fast solution with machine learning features, good integration, and a good API."
"The most valuable feature of Redshift is its cluster."
"The solution is easy to set up and use."
"The stability of Amazon Redshift is good."
"The initial setup of this solution is straightforward."
"If the analyst knows SQL, which is comfortable and easy to use to go between all of these tool stacks, I think it's reliable. It's a secure and reliable data warehouse."
"I work in the real estate industry, and the best features I appreciate about Amazon Redshift include its efficiency in managing large datasets."
"The solution integrates well with Power BI."
"It is a very stable tool...It is an extremely scalable tool."
"A very good integration feature that restricts access to unauthorized people."
"The product is easy to use."
"The product has self-repair features."
"I really like the auto-tuning, auto-scaling, and the automatic load balancing and query tuning in the system."
"The solution is self-securing. All data is encrypted and security updates and patches are applied automatically both periodically and off-cycle."
"It is a stable and scalable solution."

Cons

"The technical support should be better in terms of their knowledge, and they should be more customer-friendly."
"The OLAP slide and dice features need to be improved."
"Improvement in the immediate response and the process of getting into a call could be helpful."
"During the setup, whenever we try to give any permissions, if I have a data warehouse in Amazon Redshift and want to provide access to a user to just check the data without making any changes, it is a long process to create a policy in Amazon and share it with that policy."
"There are too many limitations with respect to concurrency."
"Improvement could be made in the area of streaming data."
"In our experiments, the handling of unstructured data was not very smooth."
"The product must provide new indexes that support special data structures or data types like TEXT."
"We are not satisfied with the technical support. Their understanding is lacking."
"It is very important the integration with other platforms be made to be as easy as it is with an on-premises deployment."
"I would like to see an on-premise solution in the future."
"I would like to see Application Express and Oracle R Enterprise fully supported, and I would like to see Oracle Data Mining supported as a front end."
"The setup is complex."
"My main suggestion for Oracle is the configuration and key values that come for JSON files. When we create a table, especially if you see in our RedShift or some other stuff, if I create a table on top of a JSON file with multiple array columns or superset columns, those column values create some difficulty in Oracle."
"One of the major problem is creating custom tablespace. The ADB serverless option doesn't support custom tablespace creation, which could cause issues during on-premise database migration that requires specifically named tablespace. There should be an option to create customized tablespace."
"It doesn't work well when you have unstructured data or you need online analytics. It is not as nice as Hadoop in these aspects."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The cost must be improved."
"If you want a fixed price, an to not worry about every query, but you need to manage your nodes personally, use Redshift."
"Redshift is very cost effective for a cloud based solution if you need to scale it a lot. For smaller data sizes, I would think about using other products."
"At the moment, pricing is a little bit on the higher side, although it depends on the size of the company."
"The solution is available at a mid-range price compared to other vendors."
"This solution implements the pay-as-you-use model, so no license. Pricing could be cheaper."
"The best part about this solution is the cost."
"Per hour pricing is helpful to keep the costs of a pilot down, but long-term retention is expensive."
"On a scale from one to ten, where one is a low price and ten is a high price, I rate the pricing an eight."
"You pay as you go, and you don't pay for services that you don't use."
"We pay approximately $70,000 per month. The cost includes maintenance and support."
"ROI is high."
"Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse's pricing is fair and reasonable compared to the other cloud vendors."
"The solution is expensive."
"The solution's cost is reasonable."
"In terms of architecture and pricing structure, I feel it is a little bit costly compared to Azure. It's fine compared to RedShift, but compared to Azure, it's a bit pricey when you calculate for one TB storage plus around five hours of reporting with the frequency of 1TB data. The cost adds up, making Oracle a bit expensive."
