The ability to configure rules to check for consistency has helped
Apiary provides a free tier of the platform which allows a small group of developers to collaborate easily on the design of open source APIs. In addition to this, it provides mock endpoints allowing people to experiment with the API without depending or having to stand up a real backend. With our clients, using Apiary allows us to very quickly pull together an API definition (particularly when using API Blueprint). The whole API design process for the simpler use cases can be done in a relatively short workshop which makes it a lot easier to agree, publish, version-manage an API definition with suitable documentation. This can then be evolved and enhanced (particularly in the documentation aspects). With the ability to support Swagger (Open API v2 and introducing/ed support for v3) and API Blueprint makes it a very versatile tool.

Apigee empowers effective API management while needing improvements in technical support
There is room for improvement with Apigee as OPDK private cloud enhancements have stopped, focusing only on Apigee hybrid and Apigee X, with Google no longer adding new features to OPDK private cloud. I am not currently utilizing AI in the private cloud with Apigee, but I'm unsure about hybrid and Apigee X.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"This solution has allowed us to standardize API definitions and bring consistency into our shared components, reducing the effort and cost of using functionality across domains within the organization, with Apiary being crucial to our good API strategy."
"Vey high - very easy API design with no setup effort"
"I find the generation of mock services very useful, especially when demonstrating for new consumers."
"I do like the overall performance of the solution."
"Git integration"
"The feature I find most valuable is that it offers authentication and allows us to develop communication points."
"In two years, there was one time the service was down for an hour or so."
"Quick and easy way to share a new API design with teams."
"I would recommend this solution to others who are interested in using it."
"It is scalable."
"I'm still evaluating, but in terms of overall performance and stability, it's quite good."
"Implementation success would depend on having a good API architecture and design, using analytics, and following best practices of the lifecycle management provided by tool."
"Apigee has proven to be one of the best of the breed."
"The ability to convert from language to language using a single tool."
"The solution is stable and reliable."
"Technical support is good with everything."

Cons

"Swagger (OpenAPI Specification) and Blueprint Support"
"I would like an integrated option to download a Swagger version of the definition."
"Better Swagger support."
"I don't think this solution is very stable so we try to manage stability from our side."
"Validation messages could be a bit clearer."
"The Oracle release cycle is very bad because the patches only update once a year."
"Since it is based on various open sourced projects, we might have to depend on the fixes provided by those components rather than Apigee directly fixing the issues."
"The company needs to better support webhooks. It used to support webhooks and their policies and they have since stopped. They had some issues in the product and they abandoned the support for them. It's not come back since."
"Unlike WSA, Apigee does not have a partnership model, something which makes it a bit easier for companies such as ours to go with the former solution."
"The developer portal's adoption of the OpenAPI standard needs to be improved. In the latest version of the developer portal, they have adopted the OpenAPI standard. This feature, however, can be improved by supporting more characteristics of the OpenAPI standard."
"Compared to its competitors, such as Axway AMPLIFY API Management and Layer7 API Management, Apigee could benefit from having more policies to cater to various use cases. This would reduce the need for writing custom JavaScripts. If more features come straight out of the box, we can leverage them instead of writing custom code to achieve the same functionality."
"Apigee has a lot of components, which means that management will be a bit difficult."
"The entire user across all the layers should be singly authenticated through an external authentication system."
"I would say that it currently takes too long to set up and deploy and that it is not as short a time to complete the process as it should be."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It is easy to get started with personal (free) accounts, but a subscription is required for additional features."
"There is a free subscription option to start and try the service."
"They need to work on the cost of the solution."
"It was fairly expensive. I don't know what the standard pricing is. I want to say that it's something like $80,000 for 800 million requests (approximately) a year."
"Compared to other products, Apigee had higher pricing."
"The product's pricing is fair. You need to pay additional costs for the support."
"Based on your usage of the APIs you can take a decision to go with either an on-cloud or OPDK version. Get in touch with the sales representatives of Apigee."
"The current version of Apigee is not too expensive, but we are currently in talks with Google to understand their roadmap for Apigee X. However, we anticipate that with the introduction of Apigee X, the pricing will likely increase."
"Apigee is expensive and not cost-effective. On a scale of one to ten, I would rate it an eight for the high cost. The changes individuals need to make on their side are costly."
"You do not necessarily pay for the license. The cloud solution is based more on transactions. So, you pay for it either way."
