Useful automation capabilities, scales well, and simple implementation
We are currently exploring automation options for various areas, and Avantra should consider implementing automation for change request management, an area they have not yet ventured into. While Avantra is currently excelling in monitoring and system refreshes, there is scope for improvement in automating change request management. In addition to primarily focusing on SAP, Avantra currently performs kernel patches which are core SAP patches. However, exploring more into OS patching could be another potential area for Avantra to expand its automation capabilities. Looking ahead to future releases, I would like to see more advanced automation features. As a long-term goal, I am considering the possibility of automating SAP system upgrades. While this would not be an easy feat, advancements in technology may make it feasible in the future. Overall, a key feature I hope to see in future releases is increased automation capabilities.

AI-driven insights have reduced downtime and improved cross-team collaboration
We encountered some challenges while using Dynatrace. Although the initial setup was smooth, fine-tuning alert thresholds and custom metrics took some time. Another challenge was that Dynatrace charges based on host units, so we had to carefully plan our agent deployments. The licensing model is expensive. Additionally, the complexity of setup is an issue. While OneAgent and auto-discover services are powerful, the setup is more complex compared to other tools such as Prometheus and Grafana. These integrations are simple and basic, but Dynatrace setup requires more complexity based on the environment. For new users wanting to use Dynatrace, it is difficult. However, the AI-related solutions and metrics took us to the next level for identifying and fixing things. Dynatrace requires an agent for operation. OneAgent is powerful, but it is also resource-heavy. On lightweight nodes or older systems, the agent can slightly impact performance. If Dynatrace could implement a lightweight agent behavior, we could make things faster. Additionally, if Dynatrace could add a long-term retention policy so that we could store more data and find fine-grained details, that would help us. While Dynatrace managed edition supports on-premises deployment, the SaaS version depends on cloud connectivity. For highly regulated or air-gapped environments, setup and updates can be challenging. Although the initial setup is smooth, if someone wants to fine-tune it and fully understand the tool end-to-end, it could be tricky.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable feature of Avantra is automation. The reduction of manual work and having them automated is one of the top reasons why I would use it."
"It's very easy to manage and use."
"You can customize alerts based on need."
"For me, the most valuable feature of this solution is that deep dive that we get out of the AppMon product with the PurePath technology, and the way that the PurePath stack works."
"What I like about it, is how it auto-discovers everything rapidly; within a matter of seconds you get to see the business transaction and how it's mapped within the product itself."
"The observability provided by Dynatrace is extremely valuable."
"UEM can be used for user impact analysis and troubleshooting."
"You can see every step a transaction goes through, which servers it hits, and what technology it uses."
"No one else works with security gateways. I am able to configure those perfectly well within the banking and FDIC infrastructure to pass audits."
"They have a feature that allows you to monitor the user, and we are able to create a VIP customer."
"The most valuable features are end user visibility, Smartscape, and the entire visibility of our data center, including SQL queries."

Cons

"The dashboard needs to improve."
"The machine-learning is lacking and should be improved."
"The Web UI can be slow and hard to understand."
"Scalability has improved quite a bit from the beginning."
"One significant complaint I have raised with Dynatrace as a consultant is the availability of raw data for logs. While this capability exists, it is quite costly."
"It definitely needs HA, because we have so many applications that are dependent on AppMon that it has been deemed critical. Any downtime, it just affects so many users. So that's one of our key asks for the future."
"Make the Web UI more robust. Last time I used the web interface, it was still pretty crude."
"Regarding features, it would be good if there would be some features regarding app security."
"Dynatrace could be improved primarily with regards to pricing. These tools are expensive."
"An area for improvement would be security. In the next release, I'd like to see more network-centric capabilities - Dynatrace is good at the network level, but I have to leverage other network solutions and integrate with them, but a holistic approach including the network as a one-stop-shop would be great."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"The licensing model is confusing in solutioning clients for the number of hosts needed to deploy."
"Price (of the product) is a major concern for all the clients I work with."
"Surprisingly, it is quite expensive. That is something that we could always see: Improved pricing and the overall construct on how do we use each license in regards to usage of the tool."
"Look at the product and the product features, not the price. Too often people look at the price and turn away. Dynatrace costs a little bit more than the other products I researched, but it can do far more."
"The pricing and licensing are very expensive."
"The product is pricey, but it is feature-rich, which is why we probably haven't looked away from it."
"The price range is quite high."
"We have a three-year contract. We have 30 licenses for the full stack and 3 licenses for the DEM unit."
