Streamlines data migration across platforms with cost-effective and scalable solutions
We have the continuous data integration feature, but it does not work very well in our given ecosystem because we have huge data volume, and it reads from archive log rather than the redo sequence. That is where it lacks, so we are not able to do continuous streaming data injection. The ability to handle heterogeneous migrations for our organization is adequate. I do not see a major value add, or see it as a marquee feature. It is a good tool, but we do not have that sort of uses requirement. In my 10 plus years of experience, I do not see that kind of requirement where I have to replicate it in real time. I leverage AWS CloudWatch for addressing migration issues. The major challenges come across CDC. We have created latency filter and everything, but there is no way to control it. Due to the nature of our business, the transactions increase during month end and year end. My transactions are supposed to increase, my workloads on my core system increases, but my DMS is not able to keep up with them, even if I increase it to a higher side. Improvements could be made in AWS Database Migration Service. Because of that, I am moving out of DMS now to a STRIIM solution. DMS works within AWS ecosystem, but they also have to look for third party solutions. Now Snowflake is a bigger player, or Databricks. Something that could be possible as a connector, whether paid or free, but giving as a connector to that ecosystem as well.

Real-time integration and seamless data synchronization enhance user experience
The stability of Oracle GoldenGate Cloud Service is one of its most useful features, although its performance is not too steady. It excels with bidirectional data synchronization. It supports diverse databases and platforms. We link the ODS with numerous source systems, including Oracle, Tarek Data, and Microsoft, with no integration issues. The solution caters to enterprise needs, fitting any organizational requirement, apart from data security issues common to cloud solutions. The cloud data security challenge is notable, necessitating solutions such as private cloud offerings to allay security concerns.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The main reason clients come to us to do these migrations to AWS is that it's self-managed."
"The way it works is brilliant, and it's based on similar logic to Oracle's GoldenGate migration tool in that you can migrate everything from data tables to schemas from one database to another."
"What I find most valuable in AWS Database Migration Service are these features: the full load and continuous data replication to heterogeneous endpoints."
"Support is helpful."
"We have the ability to bring data for all tables of a database in one go, as long as the tables follow a particular naming convention."
"The solution is instantaneous. We can launch the service and reduce the end number of manpower."
"The most valuable feature is its ability to get all the changes in our data and store that in an S3 bucket."
"AWS Database Migration Service enabled me to migrate an on-premises database to AWS with minimal downtime, which is a great offering from AWS."
"It provides a good response for external microservices applications."
"This has significantly eased the process of migration from on-premise to cloud, as instead of configuring everything from the ground up, the Oracle GoldenGate Cloud Service has made it seamless to build and render databases in cloud."
"We are heavily involved with GitHub for managing repositories, automatic deployments, and inner source projects."
"GoldenGate can aggregate various data types from different sources."
"GoldenGate's best features are the desktop security features."
"GoldenGate is a good solution to implement in terms of scalability and flexibility."
"Oracle Database generally guarantees a good response for customer use cases."
"Scalability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten."

Cons

"The most significant issue is the licensing costs, which sometimes make it difficult for AWS to compete with existing Microsoft pricing structures."
"Whatever solution worked today can not be reused in the next migration."
"It is a very expensive program and you pay a license fee based on the amount of users you have."
"Years ago, the price was nominal and acceptable for the client to do a migration. Now, prices are challenging, especially with versions continually changing."
"I think that Amazon needs to improve the migration scenarios after analytics. We need more migration tools or more specific tools for migration and licenses."
"One area that AWS DMS can improve on is its conversion of data types. For example, in Oracle, you have a data type called RAW, but in PostgreSQL there is no such thing. Thus, AWS DMS doesn't know what type I want to use when migrating from Oracle to PostgreSQL, and when performing the migration, AWS DMS changed the RAW data type to the byte data type, which isn't what I wanted."
"This solution can offer more tweaks where the latency can be brought down to fifteen seconds."
"More endpoints need to be supported by AWS Database Migration Service. There's also a need for more control and transparency on the product, including better technical support."
"More technical documentation is needed, especially in terms of mapping and conversion of data, while integration would also be very helpful."
"The initial setup was a little complex, and we required support from Oracle to complete it."
"With Oracle GoldenGate Cloud Service, we have usual cloud solution issues such as privacy and data security."
"Oracle GoldenGate Cloud Service lacks AI. If AI gets introduced in Oracle GoldenGate Cloud Service, it would be much easier to do analysis."
"Pricing is rather expensive. Oracle typically prices on the higher side, and there is scope for them to reconsider the price, especially since it is a cloud service."
"Oracle is always adding new features. I can't think of anything that's urgent currently."
"I am not very happy with Oracle Support. Over the past four to five years, I have experienced many problems when opening support requests."
"Support could be improved. They lack knowledge."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution’s pricing is reasonable."
"AWS Database Migration Service is very inexpensive."
"AWS Database Migration Service is the least expensive solution, but is still expensive."
"Cost is the only factor that is challenging."
"The pricing is on the higher side."
"For Egypt, the product's prices are high, making it a specific problem in one region and not globally."
"The pricing can be better and it should be more competitive."
"In terms of pricing, I'd rate it an eight out of ten, considering it's a well-priced solution."
"I rate the product price a six on a scale of one to ten, where one is cheap, and ten is expensive."
