Optimizes cloud strategies with security and cost insights
Trusted Advisor offers features that provide inside information for the entire account, including identifying security gaps and offering cost optimization insights. The key features include security recommendations, cost optimization, and various packages to choose from, depending on the size of the company. It is especially beneficial for larger companies, as the tool provides a comprehensive view of account security, open ports, buckets, and offers recommendations for protection.

The solution reduced our operational expenditures and is able to identify points before we even noticed them
The management interface seems to be designed for high-resolution screens. Somebody with a smaller-resolution screen might not like the web interface. I run a 4K monitor on it, so everything fits on the screen. With a lower resolution like 1080, you need to scroll a lot. Everything is in smaller windows. It doesn't seem to be designed for smaller screens. When I change the resolution to 1080, I only see half of what I would on my big 4K monitor. It would be annoying to have to scroll to see the flow chart. They have a flow chart that goes top to bottom like a tree. On a lower resolution, it might be nice if that scrolls horizontally because it's long, narrow, and tall. It's only three icons wide, but it's 15 icons tall. I think it would be helpful to have the ability to change that for a smaller screen and customize the widget.

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The cost optimization and security-related fixes in the AWS Trusted Advisor have been great."
"Trusted Advisor offers features that provide inside information for the entire account, including identifying security gaps and offering cost optimization insights."
"The recommendation feature is really good."
"Trusted Advisor scans the complete infrastructure within the account, providing a consolidated view of all services in use."
"It is very stable."
"The key features include security recommendations, cost optimization, and various packages to choose from, depending on the size of the company."
"The Security Advisor is the most valuable feature. It instantly informs you about any system misconfigurations, and the best part is, it's completely free."
"I would give it a ten out of ten."
"With Turbonomic, we were able to reduce our ESX cluster size and save money on our maintenance and license renewals, saving us around $75,000 per year with a one-time reduction of over $200,000 in VMware licensing, plus ongoing savings of probably $50,000 to $75,000 a year and a 25% reduction in human resource time and monitoring costs."
"Turbonomic's ability to automatically load balance my storage and hosts has saved a lot of time."
"Turbonomic is an excellent product as far as we are concerned for managing the pod sizes and determining the best sizing for those pods."
"Turbonomic has definitely helped to save human resource time and cost involved in monitoring and optimizing our estate; it has automated a lot of things and we have saved 30 to 35 percent in human resource time and cost, which is pretty substantial."
"The automation piece is one of the most valuable features."
"Turbonomic is easy to use, but has the ability to provide much more complex data and planning for projects and growth."
"Customer Service is excellent; I have yet to open a ticket and not have my problem looked at right away, and 99% of the time, the issues were resolved right away."
"Customer Service: Excellent. We largely don't have to touch the product which has led to us missing out on an occasional feature."

Cons

"Maybe if Trusted Advisor could also help us with IP address issues and the status of our VPCs, it would be beneficial."
"Whenever they suggest anything or any changes in the environment, we cannot click and simply implement those changes."
"The tenancy must be free for all metrics."
"I'd like the solution to support clouds beyond AWS."
"Trusted Advisor currently scans the whole system, including development, staging, and QA environments, which increases costs. It would be better if it could selectively scan only production systems."
"Cost is a significant factor that needs improvement. Reducing the cost would make it more beneficial for all users."
"The integration between Trusted Advisor and Security Hub sometimes lacks, and I need a way to ensure things come through there."
"For EC2 instances, we need to install the AWS CloudWatch agent to get the memory metric because we don't have a by-default memory utilization graph on cost optimization."
"This is a very powerful tool that we don't use to its fullest, mostly due to the GUI."
"While the product is fairly intuitive and easy to use once you learn it, it can be quite daunting until you have undergone a bit of training."
"Reports could be more versatile."
"The product is administered using a web based interface. This interface was written in Adobe's Flash product which requires the Adobe Flash plugin to be installed on any device accessing it."
"When upgrading prior versions, I sometimes lost prior performance data. Even support was not able to retrieve it."
"Built-in, context-sensitive 'Help' would be useful at times, instead of having to search through the User Guide or Community for assistance - or just for those times when you're curious about the function of a particular option/feature."
"There is room for improvement [with] upgrades. We have deployed the newer version, version 8 of Turbonomic. The problem is that there is no way to upgrade between major Turbonomic versions. You can upgrade minor versions without a problem, but when you go from version 6 to version 7, or version 7 to version 8, you basically have to deploy it new and let it start gathering data again. That is a problem because all of the data, all of the savings calculations that had been done on the old version, are gone. There's no way to keep track of your lifetime savings across versions."
"Many of the current recommendations are inaccurate."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Trusted Advisor offers various packages, with the most comprehensive costing $15,000 per month."
"It was an annual buy-in. You basically purchase it based on your host type stuff. The buy-in was about 20K, and the annual maintenance is about $3,000 a year."
"The pricing and licensing are fair. We purchase based on benchmark pricing, which we have been able to get. There are no surprise charges nor hidden fees."
"It is an endpoint type license, which is fine. It is not overly expensive."
"The product is fairly priced right now. Given its capabilities, it is excellently priced. We think that the product will become self-funding because we will be able to maximize our resources, which will help us from a capacity perspective. That should save us money in the long run."
"Contact the Turbonomic sales team, explain your needs and what you're looking to monitor. They will get a pre-sales SE on the phone and together work up a very accurate quote."
"I consider the pricing to be high."
"Price is a big one. VMTurbo was very competitively priced."
"Licensing is per socket, so load up on the cores rather than a lot of lower core CPUs."
