Improves database performance, supports AI integration, and accelerates customer-focused innovation
Azure Database for PostgreSQL can be improved in the area of elastic capabilities. One of the things we were actively looking for is the elastic feature, which was made a GA at this Ignite event. I am really happy that finally in Azure, we have a product which we can use for elastic clusters. If you are bound with a single server, then you have a vertical limit. Now you do not have any limits. As long as your use case grows, we can grow. The only thing I would maybe be thinking about is we should also allow customers to pick different node sizes for every node inside the elastic eventually. Some nodes do not need that big capacity. So that may be a nice-to-have feature, though it is not a must-have at this point.

Regarding Azure SQL Managed Instance, I would like to see improvements in AI capabilities. If we want to utilize AI features, we need to provide the resources and offer instructions to receive proper answers. If that could be improved, it would yield many benefits. Additionally, performance and compute skills should be enhanced, security upgraded, automation backed, and more productivity tools developed for real-time architecture and tooling. Currently, AI is booming, and I think features that enhance scalability and performance are essential. First, I believe there should be good scalability and architecture. The second aspect pertains to an agentic environment such as GitHub Copilot agent mode, web portal query editor, or Terraform coverage. Finally, security should also be a focus, particularly regarding event streaming transitions.

Pros

"If a client is looking to check these boxes—performance, speed, reliability, and resiliency in general—knowing that it will satisfy application needs not just today but in the future, it is definitely a choice."
"The performance of our RAG application is very good. We have 96% satisfaction."
"Overall, we are satisfied with Microsoft solutions and recommend them."
"In terms of integration, we already have SharePoint online, and we're starting to explore PowerApps and PowerFlow. It's all seamless. The ease of integrating SQL and licensing purposes plays a significant role, making it a comfortable choice for the organization."
"Overall, Azure Database for PostgreSQL has been good for us."
"Postgres has helped us innovate and stay competitive."
"The most valuable features of Azure Database for PostgreSQL are its networking capabilities, which allow for integration with other Azure services."
"What I appreciate most about Azure Database for PostgreSQL is not one particular feature; I think it is the use case and the facility to have a single pane of glass for managing what is on the edge, what is on the cloud, especially now with Azure Local as well."
"Security-wise, Azure SQL Managed Instance is absolutely robust, and governance-wise, the manageability of Azure SQL Managed Instance is very good."
"I can tell you categorically that the ROI, the return on investment is very, very high and it's very commendable."
"The most important aspect of Azure SQL Managed Instance for me is its serverless compute, as it has cost efficiency and massive scalability, along with elastic pools and a Hyperscale tier."
"Azure SQL Managed Instance has positively impacted my organization because we save a lot on resources, particularly on hiring people with skills to manage SQL servers."

Cons

"The critical service is the Azure OpenAI service. It would help to make it simpler and easier to integrate with that or cognitive services."
"There is a stability issue where, if the database usage peaks quickly, it may crash and require intervention to restore functionality. It does not auto-heal or self-heal in such situations."
"My impressions of the latency and availability of Azure Database for PostgreSQL is that it is a concern that arises post-migration."
"Azure Database for PostgreSQL has not really helped reduce infrastructure costs at my company."
"Currently, most databases will try to use all the CPUs available and use all the memories available. We try to give all the databases one hundred percent of the hardware capacity, but sometimes because the OS layer itself will need some resources."
"I do not know how Azure Database for PostgreSQL can be improved or what additional features I would prefer to see. There may be some pain points that would be valuable to fix."
"Azure Database for PostgreSQL has not helped reduce infrastructure costs for me or my clients."
"They can offer more RAG extensions. Currently, it only has the vector search."
"The customer support for Azure SQL Managed Instance is the usual Microsoft support, neither great nor bad."
"Regarding Azure SQL Managed Instance, I would like to see improvements in AI capabilities. Additionally, performance and compute skills should be enhanced, security upgraded, automation backed, and more productivity tools developed for real-time architecture and tooling."
"Azure SQL Managed Instance can be improved by adding more scalability options."
"The only red flag I could point out is you don't have 100% control of your data. You don't have 100% control of that particular server because it is Microsoft that has access to it."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The pay-as-you-go pricing model plays a critical role in managing database-related costs and resource allocation. We build using Infrastructure as Code (IAC) and maintain a focus on FinOps to control Azure service costs. Some clients are pushy on price. It's critical to automate it, so we're just using it when appropriate and switching it off in certain scenarios."
"There aren't any notable areas for improvement that I could see. PostgreSQL was self-sufficient with no need for additional database knowledge to maintain it."
"The pricing experience is positive. Azure Database for PostgreSQL reduces the need for hardware investments, and the pay-as-you-go pricing model positively affects database-related costs by allowing us to start small and scale as needed."
"We do not pay for a full-year subscription because our usage is still at the beginning phase and not much. The pay-as-you-go model works well for us."
