Ease of backup and restore improves data management with reliable support
The interface of BDRSuite Backup & Replication is pretty intuitive. Regarding their marketing strategy, I'm very bad at marketing. I always get a little edgy when people try to shove their product in my face. There are two sides to the story. If you don't know something exists, you might not even start to look for it unless you really know that you need it. If you are explicitly looking for a solution, then you'll find it. People that don't know that they should do backup don't have a place in IT. I rate BDRSuite Backup & Replication 8.5 out of 10.

Ransomware recovery has become validated and protects critical workloads across multiple accounts
The account onboarding process deploys around 20 IAM roles per account, which is heavy. Consolidating those or offering a slimmer permission set for read-only backup (versus full restore) would help with security review friction. Cross-account restore into a target account still requires manual steps for KMS. If Clumio could handle re-encrypting with the target account's CMK during restore rather than requiring Multi-Region Key pre-staging, that would save significant preparation time. Also, the restore API could surface better progress telemetry since right now, large RDS restores are a bit of a black box until they complete or fail. Finally, DocumentDB and MongoDB Atlas backup support would round out our stack nicely.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We are quite happy with the latest version and how it works."
"It made it easy for us to handle the daily backup of endpoints."
"You should definitely consider using this tool, as an off-site backup option."
"It's easy to restore."
"If our country is hit by a meteor, I have secured data in another country on the other side of the world, then I can start the restore process immediately with this solution."
"The agentless backups are the big selling point on this, as well as being able to send out across sites so that I can do a restore at either of our two locations."
"When you're looking at your dashboard, you can see all your active jobs. You can see exactly if they're successful or failed and you can actually drill down and see what caused the problem. The fact you can see that right away is nice."
"The ROI is very good because you have the safety of being protected by backing up your data a lot, so if an incident happens then we can restore valuable data, save a lot of money, and preserve the continuity of the business."
"Working with the Clumio/Commvault team has been a very good experience."
"Clumio gave us a genuinely isolated vault that sits outside our AWS Organization's blast radius."
"It has improved our disaster recovery footprint; previously, backups were only stored on premises, and having an offsite backup improves our reliability and security."
"We now have the peace of mind knowing that our entire AWS infrastructure is fully backed up into an air-gapped environment."
"Clumio has a straightforward setup"
"We have been able to safely and securely save our backups off of AWS."
"Clumio proved to be the most cost-effective option."

Cons

"The reporting can use some improvement."
"The product is co-branded, not white-labeled."
"It is not a well-known software. People do not know about Vembu."
"I am not giving it a higher score because it is complicated to recover a crashed backup server."
"The deduplication could be better. It doesn't give the level of deduplication that I would get with a product that's stored in a more standard file format. I would prefer to be able to use a non-deduplicated store on a third-party deduplicated medium."
"We had a lot of problems getting it configured in the first place. They also wanted us to allow them remote access to our machines without us watching what they're doing, which is a huge security risk for us. We said we couldn't do that, and they said they don't offer any phone support whatsoever."
"It's not a ten because the accent of the customer support agents is very difficult to understand."
"I rate it at eight out of ten because, during the evaluation period, we had a server that was sizing at about 1.8 TB and the product took about 26 to 27 hours to restore it."
"The account onboarding process deploys around 20 IAM roles per account, which is heavy."
"They need to improve their SQL backup services"
"It would be beneficial to show when backups are available and to receive alerts if there are any issues with the backups."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"This solution provides much more value than other products that provide similar functionality. If price is a consideration for anyone who is looking to improve their backup processes, they owe it to themselves to look at the Vembu BDRSuite."
"For our company, the current price of Vembu against Veeam is a few times cheaper. In our infrastructure, if we picked Veeam, we would have to pay about $20,000 per year. Now, we are currently paying about $2,000 per year for Vembu. You can do the math. The price is great."
"The pricing of Vembu could be better. They have a good product, and I know good products cost money, but they need to find a balance."
"The pricing structure is in line with other solutions. However, the option to replicate offsite to a unit at another office or at home is a big cost benefit. Instead of paying monthly for cloud storage, you replicate offsite for free."
"It's very affordable. We are very satisfied with the cost. It's very affordable for us."
"We were able to take advantage of a promotional pricing campaign."
"It helps us deliver an enterprise-level data protection solution and reduce budgets at a price that - and we don't want to encourage them to change their pricing - is a great value."
"Previously, we used Veeam Backup, but we replaced it with Vembu. We switched because Vembu is more cost-effective. So, price was a factor."
