Centralized DDI management has transformed our hospitals and now cuts manual effort to a minimum
There is not much to dislike about it. It is not a Microsoft product. It is based on Linux. I am a Microsoft guy learning to run these Linux environments. So there is a little bit of a learning curve there if you are not already a native or natural Linux user. We do have to patch our environments, probably quarterly, with hot fixes or updates that we have to apply. Updates and maintenance and applying them could be improved. Unfortunately, we can only do them one at a time. We have to follow them sequentially. We cannot do them all in mass. That does become a problem for us, especially if we have a zero-day threat that is sitting out there that is live. If I cannot update my environment within moments, then I am challenged. In order to update this environment with 150 plus devices, I have to go through one at a time. That can take us several days to be able to patch. Our API is the only automation capability. Our networking team who provisions our new networks as we build a new environment or a new site or we acquire a new organization handles a lot of that through automation via API. They provision and build up the permissions and rights and access model for each new network and sub-network. We are considering and trying to determine if we need to get even more automated and whether or not we need to leverage more API capability. We are building a team of automation engineers, and they are looking around and digging to find something to work on. We could do some more automation, but what would we do? We still have not figured out what else we would do. For my team that runs the actual BlueCat Integrity environment, we do not use API automation. Our networking team who provisions and builds the new networks handles that via API. We have thought about going through more in-depth automation, but we cannot find a good use case for it in terms of what level of engagement we want to take with it and how dedicated we want to be to become a development shop. That is still on the wings and we are trying to figure out if this is something that we can handle, or do we continually have to rely upon an external developer. BlueCat Integrity does not develop for us. They have a certain level of liability that they will not accept when it comes to automation and scripting through their API. They say they will guide us, but they will not do it for us.

Manages integrated IP and DHCP with ease and could improve with better alert customization and faster support response
I normally do not have other tools experience to compare with, but with SolarWinds IPAM, they actually integrate with the DHCP DNS server, allowing us to get the scopes, and from there, we can retrieve the information, which is a good feature for managing the DNS DHCP server. The automated discovery feature of SolarWinds IPAM is fine, but I am unable to compare it with other products from different vendors due to my lack of experience with them. It starts with discovery, and we can discover things through the gateway router or even subnet, so supernet, which is possible and a good feature. The benefit of integrated DHCP and DNS management in SolarWinds IPAM is significant. It can gather proper information such as MAC addresses from the DHCP server, so having DHCP and DNS servers integrated is vital to get complete information, otherwise some details may be missed. I commonly use the centralized dashboard for multiple products in SolarWinds IPAM. SolarWinds IPAM effectively helps resolve IP address conflicts. The centralized dashboard has significantly helped resolve IP address conflicts. SolarWinds IPAM has provided a centralized dashboard for a long time now rather than requiring separate management of individual features such as managing IP addresses across separate subnets, which used to be very difficult. Nowadays, there are tools to manage them easily, integrating them with the DHCP server, DNS server, and even IP request-related functionality, which helps a lot in management.

Pros

"As a defense contractor, we must meet many compliance standards regarding logging, configuration, and administrative access. BlueCat is one of the few products that combines all the compliance components in a secure, reliable solution."
"It is easy to use. It has an understandable GUI interface. Its deployment is relatively easy."
"One of the better things about Integrity is that the underlying code it uses is an ISC DNS and DHCP. It's not like some of the other vendors that have created their own version of DNS."
"BlueCat's approach to customer relationships has definitely influenced my experience with their services positively, as communication was better, and we had everything in place."
"With the assistance of BlueCat Integrity and re-architecting, redesigning, and redeploying, our failure rate has gone to zero."
"BlueCat's technical support is very good."
"I've been impressed by BlueCat's performance and user-friendly GUI."
"One of the key features enabling us to operate at our current scale is robust automation."
"Scalability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten."
"SolarWinds products are always priced lower than you’d expect for great software."
"The most valuable feature of SolarWinds IPAM is its automated IP address management. Instead of working with Excel sheets, it's automated and saves a lot of time and effort. Additionally, it is adaptable, IT managers enjoy it, and it is high quality."

"We got a complete view of our network addresses, and we got rid of a lot of Excel sheets after introducing this solution."
"If you can afford it, I would definitely recommend going for SolarWinds because it's simple and easy to manage."

Cons

"XHA has some very unusual requirements. If you're running just two BlueCat appliances for a given area of responsibility, then in VMware, if they land on the same VM host, you can run into challenges with XHA, which we are learning."
"One complaint about the interface is BlueCat's handling of subzones."
"We encountered a couple of situations where our BlueCat Integrity Address Manager was in a hung state, requiring us to rebuild it after performing an upgrade."
"Adaptive DNS only supports AWS for network automation and cloud computing and would be improved if it also supported other options like Azure or Google Cloud."
"Some areas need improvement, especially the issue with stale entries in the BlueCat tenancy. I have heard that it is already fixed in BlueCat Integrity 10. I have not used that yet."
"The solution is too granular and sometimes complex to configure. We do not always need so many details. Simpler configurations with fewer details would be beneficial."
"Unfortunately, BlueCat Integrity doesn't support bulk Content Security Policy configuration."
"The technical support is slow and has room for improvement."
"Some processes are a little bit bumpy. The solution needs a design refresh."
"SolarWinds IPAM offers premium support, but the customer has to pay more money, and then they will have minimal response times."
"Because I'm still not able to utilize my IPAM on the AWS cloud environment, I would rate it a 7 out of 10, but I'm happy with it on the on-prem side."
"The product needs to improve its support. The response time is long and not very helpful."
"SolarWinds IPAM offers premium support, but the customer has to pay more money, and then they will have minimal response times."
"The installation and storage could be improved."
"My understanding is that IPAM cannot be used for the AWS environment. I might be wrong, but that's what I believe it cannot do. On AWS, SolarWinds IPAM cannot do what it does on the on-prem side. They should explore how to make IPAM capable and scalable on AWS and Azure environments."
"I would like more updates."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"BlueCat Integrity's pricing is reasonable within the market."
"Overall, I would say that it is priced fairly, though perhaps a bit on the high side."
"Adaptive DNS's price depends on your network ranges, the services you want, and the level of support you require."
"Compared to other solutions, BlueCat Integrity offers a competitive price."
"BlueCat Integrity is more cost-effective than Infoblox."
"Overall, it's a decent price for the product. There are other vendors that have support models and costs that are, sometimes, double what Bluecat charges."
"I am not sure about the exact pricing, but I believe their cost is lower compared to Infoblox."
"BlueCat Integrity is affordable."
"On a scale of one to five, where one is high and five is good, I would rate this solution as a four."
"I would rate the product's pricing a six out of ten."
"The product is costly."
"It's on the costlier side. It's expensive."
"The price of SolarWinds IPAM is good. After the second year, you have to pay additional for maintenance, because the first year is included with the license maintenance and support. It's from the second year on, you have to pay about 20% of the list price for maintenance and support."
