Modern workflows have accelerated mainframe delivery and simplify understanding legacy code
BMC AMI DevX can be improved primarily by streamlining initial configuration and installation, simplifying advanced documentation, and enhancing UI/UX feature discoverability. While the platform successfully bridges modern IDEs such as VS Code with z/OS, user feedback highlights the need for simplifying setup and onboarding configuration. The initial installation and login process can be simplified. Although it feels complex initially, once completed, there is nothing to do with installation repeatedly since it is a one-time process. However, it is still somewhat complex. Basic tutorials are available that address teams implementing the configuration of multi-vendor tools and integration, but documentation gaps exist that frequently force heavy reliance on vendor support. Additionally, certain components across the workspace and diagnostic tools retain a legacy feel or hide powerful features behind deep menus, so UI/UX features can be simplified. Integrating with non-BMC enterprise testing or new CI/CD orchestrators can require custom engineering rather than native plug-and-play connectors. Optimizing large-scale performance is also important, as heavy resource consumption during deep runtime analysis for large-scale code mapping can impact performance over slower network connections for extremely dense application modules.

Integrated issue tracking has improved collaboration and streamlined my project workflows
I use the labeling feature in GitHub Issues. Regarding task prioritization, I think integration with code repositories in GitHub Issues is easy to manage. In my opinion, the ability to assign issues to specific team members is a good function, and I think it simplifies collaboration. I utilize the Insights tab in GitHub Issues, and I can provide feedback about that option. Based on my experience, GitHub Issues provides main benefits, such as saving time, saving money, and streamlining processes for me and my company.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It speeds up processes, makes things easier, more efficient, and from a mainframe perspective, the way the mainframe is utilized has become that much easier."
"We have seen an improvement in the rate and level of quality at which we deploy changes."
"AI augmentation has specifically changed my day-to-day work or my team's workflow by speeding up the development and deployment process, because it helps in combining our development activities with known foundational models, thus reducing development time and increasing speed by at least 50 to 60%."
"For bank applications, DB2 is the best on the market."
"With BMC AMI DevX, developers commit the code to Git, CI/CD pipelines are automated to build the application, run code quality checks, execute unit testing, and AI-assisted tools help explain legacy code and identify potential issues so automated deployment can push changes through dev, test, and prod for faster releases, fewer manual errors, and easier onboarding for developers unfamiliar with legacy mainframe code."
"My guess is this would have taken twice as long, or we would have had many more issues without using Xpediter."
"Our intention is to use Topaz for the next generation of mainframe developers to maintain mainframe applications."
"Test data management capabilities are good."
"It enables mapping issues to specific team members, making it a valuable feature."
"Based on my experience, GitHub Issues provides main benefits, such as saving time, saving money, and streamlining processes for me and my company."

Cons

"What keeps it from being a 10 is mainly user experience, as the login and startup process can be frustrating, and the initial setup can also be challenging for new users."
"The ability to edit source code that has special characters is limited. The ability to incorporate or convert REXX into macros that are usable under the Topaz software is not there. And the REXX macros that I have developed over 40 years of work are useless, so I have a toolbox I can't use or deploy using the Topaz technology, while I can use it under MVS."
"It's not as intuitive as it should be. In terms of navigation, there is a large training curve for using it. For a millennial it might be better, if they're used to Eclipse. But coming from a non-Eclipse environment and using Eclipse, though I have experience with Eclipse, it might be cumbersome."
"Topaz Workbench often doesn't play well with other plugins in the environment."
"I would recommend some additional functionalities for debugging production failures, as while BMC AMI DevX already offers features like Ab-end AID for automatic detection and analysis of failures, a more comprehensible approach would be much appreciated."
"The only thing that bothers me about BMC AMI DevX Code Pipeline is the screen movement."
"The ISPW plugin could be improved to add some functionality which is already in ISPF panels and not in the plugin."
"It's a very complicated tool."
"The only issues I see as potential areas of improvement for GitHub Issues are that I would appreciate seeing some additional functions that can simplify my work."
"The challenge lies in the initial setup and the difficulty of adding new Issues."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I like the seat-based licensing much more than MSU-based licensing, and that the cost has been competitive."
"The only thing I would mention related to the licensing and/or the pricing, is that they have some visualization features in there that are licensed by concurrent users. We're starting to trip up on that. We're looking to probably increase the number of concurrent licenses that we have. But those types of licensing strategies, where they license by concurrent users or the number of seats is confusing for some people. They don't understand why it works sometimes and doesn't work other times."
"In general, Compuware tools are very competitive."
"It has saved our developers time and effort when working on documentation, which is now more readable and fluent."
"In terms of pricing, there isn't an extra charge for the parts of it we use. It comes with the licenses we purchased for other products, so no complaints there. The licensing is built in with the other products that you purchase from Compuware."
"The price point is great."
"It is an open source."
