Reliable support boosts confidence while initial setup complexities highlight improvement areas
Challenges I've encountered mostly involve the RMA part for hardware replacement, which doesn't happen regularly, but sometimes I face challenges due to limited parts in India; they offer different model devices as a stopgap arrangement. It's quite difficult to specify features I would want to see in future updates because that varies from model to model. I would definitely recommend Cisco Catalyst Switches to other users. We do maintenance for Cisco Catalyst Switches. For maintenance, we usually need three people from different regions working as a single team; our engineers handle both projects and maintenance, so there isn't a specific engineer just for maintenance. I work with firewalls and next-generation firewalls. Overall, I would rate the solution as an eight out of ten.

Reliable and useful for network segmentation
The solution's most valuable feature stands up well. The tool is reliable, and it stands up well. The solution works fine and lasts a long time. I think if you speak about the features that have a flow and you can measure, it is hard to say. I don't spend a lot of my time with the tool, but I know that Dell APEX is the solution's cloud. I would say the VLAN features are important. The VLAN features are really useful because network segmentation is important. I would say the tool is easy to program. I don't know if the tool has any security features that I am aware of other than the fact that the solution is for networking. The VLAN and the ability to segment your networks are easy, which is its security feature.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Cisco has a really good option, a one-dashboard option for maintaining and surveilling your entire network."
"The product is reliable."
"The CLI is pretty much the same across all switching and routing platforms from Cisco, making deployment of new switches, replacement of damaged equipment, or upgrades to newer platforms very easy."
"It's easy to configure."
"It is a nice product for enterprises and small businesses."
"Perpetual POE is a valuable feature, because when the switch reboots, access points do not."
"The stability has never been an issue."
"Cisco Catalyst Switches are the best overall."
"There is high reliability since we have used them for close to twenty years and only had possibly one failure."
"The most valuable feature of Dell PowerConnect Switches for me is the throughput. I also like that the product has more compatibility with Dell infrastructure, especially with EMC and new generation Dell servers. Dell PowerConnect Switches can also easily integrate with Dell servers, and this is another pro."
"It's much less expensive than Cisco, and yet it has the same functionalities."
"The most valuable features are the jumbo frames and the stacking."
"Dell seems to accommodate everyone when it comes to managing these switches."
"The most valuable feature is stability."
"The setup is straightforward. It takes minimum time for deployment."
"Dell PowerConnect Switches are easy to configure and fully integrate into our Cisco switches without any problem."

Cons

"Catalyst is very expensive."
"Catalyst Switches could be more secure."
"In the future, I would like to see better security for this product."
"The product could always be more secure."
"Cisco Catalyst Switches' pricing can be cheaper."
"The solution’s licensing could be improved."
"If we have a major problem, fixing it takes two or three days and six to eight engineers from Cisco. When they escalate a ticket, it goes through too many levels. Every time the issue is passed along to a new person at Cisco support, they ask the same questions repeatedly."
"The only drawback I saw with Cisco Catalyst Switches is that it's not cloud-managed."
"I can't think of what we would want in the next release."
"The product needs to improve in terms of reports and backups."
"Because of the stackings, you lose some boards and the two switches."
"A user can take care of the product's installation part, but it may not seem to be an easy process."
"When it comes to the configuration, there should be documentation and interactive help available to assist people who have experience with products from other vendors."
"The network features are not good."
"The pricing could always be a bit lower."
"Scalability, especially with the power connect series is something that you have to take into account before starting the project because any changes to an ongoing project can be difficult."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It has a very high cost, but understandably, due to its very good quality."
"The price for Cisco Catalyst Switches is not cheaper than other solutions."
"The price of this solution is reasonable."
"Pricing from Cisco is expensive but we pay for the reliability."
"The solution provides a good balance between the features and the cost structure"
"I cannot say that the pricing is reasonable because it's a little above our expectations. If we consider the recent price increases, it is not acceptable anymore."
"The product is quite expensive."
"We are on an annual license to use this solution and the price of the solution could be reduced. We have spent hundreds of thousands on our Wi-Fi network."
"The initial cost was high but since they have lasted for over ten or twenty years they are worth it."
"Dell PowerConnect switches are cheaper than Cisco switches. Cisco's higher capacity switches (100 or 200 gigs) are super-expensive. With the higher capacity, the price of the switches and the price of the architecture go high. Dell is cheaper and modular. So, I don't need to invest 100% upfront. I can invest as I progress. That is an option because the chassis will not be populated with all the pluggables. I have a choice because it is modular. I can go for 25 gigs today, and after four months, I can go for 100 gigs, and after that, I can go for 200 gigs. I have a choice when it is not a fixed switch."
"In my opinion, it is a product that is priced somewhere in the middle, making it a well-priced solution in the middle. It is not a very cheap product."
"The product is cheaper than Cisco and licensing is yearly. We have to pay additional costs for support."
"Cheaper than its competitors"
"PowerConnect Switches are priced well."
"This solution is much cheaper than comparable products by Cisco."
"Its price is okay. Sometimes, it is lower than a Cisco solution."
