Reliable switching has delivered long‑term uptime, strong PoE support, and predictable performance
Cisco Systems Catalyst Switches are highly regarded for their performance, reliability, and enterprise-grade capabilities. My main reservation, however, is the pricing. The cost of Cisco Catalyst Switches—and Cisco products in general—is relatively high, especially in many African markets where organizations often need to balance budget constraints with required functionality. There are alternative vendors that offer comparable features at a lower price point. While they may not always match Cisco’s ecosystem, stability, or full feature depth, many businesses still choose them because of the significant cost savings. Another consideration is licensing, which can add to the overall total cost of ownership depending on the deployment model and required features. Overall, Cisco Catalyst Switches remain premium enterprise solutions, but when compared with other OEMs, their higher acquisition and licensing costs can be a major deciding factor for cost-conscious organizations.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable feature is how easy it is to use."
"The product is easy to use, very user friendly and simple to navigate, offers very good stability, is quite flexible, integrates well with other solutions, and we've found the technical support to be quite helpful."
"The technical support is at an expert level."
"Cisco Catalyst is one of the most famous and popular devices for campus networks, widely used in most of the country."
"I never had downtime with Cisco Catalyst Switches in the last eight years, and I'm pretty impressed with its reliability."
"Cisco comes with built-in software access for network devices."
"When you have a homogenous network, as I do with only Cisco networking products, with no other components, then all of the features from the old platforms are available."
"It's got one feature, and that's handling extreme temperatures."
"H3C Ethernet Switches is a cheap solution."
"Offering a five-year warranty, compared to competitors' one-year warranties, is a unique advantage of H3C switches."
"Network performance is very good, suggesting that stability has not been an issue."
"The IMC feature is valuable."
"The best feature of H3C Ethernet Switches is their reliability."
"H3C is a well-known brand product and a good high-performance solution."
"To date, it has proven to be highly reliable. We have encountered no issues or challenges with it thus far."
"H3C Ethernet Switches are priced at around $500 per unit, which is very cheap and one of the most competitive prices out there."

Cons

"Cisco Catalyst Switches is an expensive solution and its price could be improved."
"Currently, Catalyst is completely proprietary with Cisco. They should have programmability options, through open-source controllers."
"It can be a little more cheaper."
"The solution could be cheaper."
"With most of the Cisco devices and models, we faced a slight decrease in speed during the initial setup and while restarting the system"
"To make it a ten they should simplify the licensing, add the cloud-managed feature, and it should be more cost-effective."
"While it is scalable, it could be better."
"I would evaluate the tech support as "fair". They have multi-tiered support and especially the level-one and two don't know what they are doing."
"The solution’s stability could be improved."
"There should be more public tools for configuration and comparing products."
"Lacks decent cloud management."
"There is room for improvement in Wi-Fi solutions, which are not optimized."
"To enhance H3C switches for the next release, improving the user interface is crucial."
"The only improvement needed is the significantly better lead time for delivery compared to other American products. In terms of technology, there isn't much difference, especially since X3 is a subsidiary of XP, and they use the same technology. However, the delivery time is notably better."
"I'd like to see better cloud management."
"H3C Ethernet Switches could improve by widening their product range to include products like 16 port LT switches and industrial switches."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It would be great for the user if Cisco lowered the prices for their routers and switches."
"Not one of the cheapest switches in the market. There are a lot of other cheaper switches, but in terms of availability and reliability, Cisco Catalyst Switches meet all requirements."
"The price should go down instead of up. "
"Cisco Catalyst Switches is a very expensive solution."
"Pricing from Cisco is expensive but we pay for the reliability."
"I don't see any price issue with Cisco. Whenever you buy a quality product, you always have a mindset of paying the premium amount. For any good product, you pay a premium amount, but that also means you are going to recover that premium over a period of time in terms of performance."
"Try to buy everything you need in bulk purchases and ask Cisco for volume discounts."
"The price of these switches is on the upper end. It is around $3,500 plus for a 24-Port switch. These switches are more expensive than Linksys and TP-Links, but you get what you pay for. If you look at the pros and cons per switch, you can justify the cost compared to a lesser and cheaper brand."
"H3C Ethernet Switches are priced at around $500 per unit, which is very cheap and one of the most competitive prices out there."
"H3C Ethernet Switches are reasonably priced."
"H3C Ethernet Switches is targeted for SMBs because it's cheaper compared to Huawei switches."
"The pricing is very affordable, making it a not-so-expensive choice. On a scale from one to ten, where one is expensive and ten is cheap, I would rate it a seven."
