Cloud features enhance security measures and simplify network management
I've dealt with many firewalls, such as SonicWalls, UniFi, pfSense, and Cisco. We found SonicWall very confusing for the average network engineer or network administrator. I don't recommend SonicWall due to its hard-to-find auditing process for exploits. Although they have fewer exploits, when they do occur, they're significant. With Fortinet FortiGate, you can access the whole firewall, with no hidden spots. pfSense is great, however, it requires a lot of manual work and has no Cloud Connect or easy management from an MSP's perspective. Palo Alto is another option that's great, but their price point isn't for everyone, especially for medium and small businesses; a $10,000 investment doesn't necessarily fit into most budgets. UniFi is another product we've started to use more alongside Fortinet FortiGate, as they have almost all features without a license, with advanced rules that are relatively inexpensive compared to Fortinet FortiGate's $1,500 a year. Fortinet FortiGate and UniFi are the two firewalls we primarily deal with. My opinion is that UniFi has better integration and oversight of the environments compared to Fortinet FortiGate.

Cloud-based solution simplifies network management with excellent support
There have been no issues with stability after deployment. There have been no complaints. For stability, I would suggest that Cisco Meraki MX is the most stable device from the security processor. Regarding content filtering features, we are using content filtering and malware access, along with all security features in Cisco Meraki MX9500. We have received good feedback from customers because since installing Cisco Meraki MX9500, we have not received any complaints. There have been no outages, no stability issues, and we have not found any vulnerabilities during security audits. It is compatible with all different OEMs, and for VPN, site-to-site VPN has been configured with other firewalls as well. We are getting very good responses from customers as there have been no complaints where we have deployed Cisco Meraki MX9500.

Advanced GUI and layered security have supported compliance and simplified intrusion prevention
I haven't had a task that I couldn't solve with Stormshield Network Security. The active-active high availability solution would be beneficial because currently, if you build a high availability solution with Stormshield Network Security, you have a main device and another one is a backup device. The HA can switch between them, but it would be good to have a master-master solution, not just a master-slave one. I could set a URL that I can call to update the DNS record. Currently, Stormshield Network Security devices support DynDNS, which is not a usual feature request from a server environment. I have my own solution instead of DynDNS because I don't prefer it, so I have my own service for that. However, the GUI does not support using a custom service instead of DynDNS. I had to solve it in the console on Stormshield Network Security device, but it would be much better if it was reachable on the GUI. I had to figure out a trick for the IPsec configuration. In the IPsec config, we have to provide the remote side's IP address, but it's always changing. This means that an office, for example a company that has an office but without a fixed IP address, cannot be used with IPsec VPN.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Apart from the fact that they should just include everything in their offering, everything else works fine for me."
"In my opinion, the main benefits that end users receive from Fortinet FortiGate are that the return on investment is good, whatever money we invest in Fortinet FortiGate product, we get it back in two years' time, it is pretty secure, having very robust hardware and software, updates are pretty good, and in the event of an issue, updates are pretty quick."
"The features that we have found most valuable are the SSL VPN and the User Portal."
"The most valuable features of Fortinet FortiGate are the APIs. They are the most widely known."
"The solution has helped our organization secure our network and connect remote sites."
"FortiGate is easy to use, and I also like its VPN."
"The pricing is excellent. It's much less expensive than Cisco."
"The feature I like most is the SD-WAN. It allows you to manage more than one ISP at the same time. And there is a high-availability mode, so if one of your ISPs is down, you still have a backup."
"One improvement from Meraki is security; it improves security in our network and we don't have any problems with receiving intrusion alerts now."
"The solution is very well-rated."
"Meraki are more intuitive than Aerohive."
"Real Auto VPN with load balancer without needing a public IP. It is simple and functional."
"The dashboard is very intuitive and easy to understand."
"The product's initial setup phase is very easy."
"The most valuable feature of Meraki MX is I can manage the solution from anywhere remotely, I can throttle bandwidth, and create all rules. Additionally, it is secure for our customers."
"It is a very good platform for small businesses; it is easy to configure and manage, it has Talos, it is easy to integrate with other Meraki products, its content filtering is good, and the VPN is very easy to configure with the Auto VPN feature."
"The features I find most valuable is the backup inspection, the filtering, and the load balancing, and I am also impressed by the antivirus feature that gives us two controls over the viruses - one is from the parameter and one on the endpoint."
"The tool's most valuable feature is its dashboard, which helps you manage different aspects of a single page. The intrusion detection system helps our organization by automatically detecting and responding to potential threats. It operates similarly to Darktrace, which detects and responds automatically based on the security rules you apply. Initially, you configure everything to block, and then you can whitelist specific items as needed."
"I feel we have more options with the Stormshield firewall and new features that we haven't previously had."
"The most valuable features of this solution are the URL filtering database, which is great and contains all internet categories, the highly scalable interface that I can turn into what I want including hybrid, bridge, or router mode, the security with no back doors that is more secure than other solutions, and the hardware performance that is also better than others."
"Stormshield is a very strong firewall and very easy to configure and maintain."
"The tool's most valuable feature is its dashboard, which helps you manage different aspects of a single page."
"The performance of this solution is good."
"Stormshield is pretty robust, compared to other products like Fortinet, as you get more security with Stormshield and spend less money."

Cons

"The support is the main thing that needs to be improved."
"The solution's framework needs to be frequently updated in order to have a stable solution."
"Fortinet needs more memory to save the log files. We need it to save the logs on the hardware and not in the cloud. I know this feature is available in FortiCloud, but if we need this log locally, it is not available."
"The captive portal could be improved."
"Technical support is a little slow and needs to be improved."
"FortiGate's logging and reporting could be improved. I would also like to see Fortinet add a guest management portal."
"The solution isn't exactly scalable, especially when it comes to the public cloud environment."
"The biggest "gotcha" is that if the client purchases what they call the UTM shared bundle, which has unified threat management on both, it's not as easy to manage if you have more than one firewall."
"Management can be improved in Meraki MX."
"It can be improved in many areas, because it has many proprietary models for many different areas."
"However, the pricing is a bit high compared to other vendors such as Fortinet or Huawei."
"The client-side VPN is weak. The product could be improved with deployment templates."
"The product doesn't support route summarization and BGP dynamic routing protocol."
"I believe Cisco Meraki MX can be improved if its price were lower; it would be significantly better."
"Meraki MX can come across as an expensive solution."
"We face a lot of challenges with hybrid and distributed enterprise networks across the US and Canada."
"Stormshield Network Security is quite expensive."
"With Stormshield, there are difficulties joining things, and it can be complex depending on the architecture."
"The filtering configuration could be better. We have some difficulties with the filtering configuration and the filter extension. It's not that easy. It's not that straightforward. In the next release, I would like to see a reporting system. Stormshield doesn't have any tutorials on how to do the configuration and things like that. They just have documentation on the website. If you want to configure, for example, Cisco or Fortinet, you can find tutorials on YouTube. They show you how to configure the features, and so on. In Stormshield, there is nothing on social media or the internet on how to configure different things. The lack of documentation or the lack of material makes it difficult for others to adopt this solution."
"It could be better if it were more user-friendly. It's too complicated for us to use it. The price could be better as well."
"It could be better if it were more user-friendly for us as we dont use it very often even if we never had problems to modify setup when needed."
"I don’t recommend this product at all."
"The SD card could be more secure."
"An application firewall like other next generation firewalls have."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Its pricing is good. The advantages of Fortinet FortiGate over its competitors include good pricing and meeting our requirements at a lower cost."
"The cost of Fortinet FortiGate is competitive and not expensive compared to other enterprise- grade solutions. On average, the license cost per year is around seventy percent of the firewall's purchase price."
"It is more affordable than Check Point and Palo Alto. Another thing is that all the features and the OS remain the same irrespective of the size of the device. Pricing-wise, Fortinet typically provides one-year support with the firewall appliance. There is also an option for three years which is how their licensing works."
"The product is expensive. I rate its pricing a six out of ten."
"This is not a cheap solution but it isn't expensive, either. It's a good solution for the right price."
"The Indian market is different than the European and American markets. When you compare they need to be a bit more aggressive on pricing."
"I rate the product's pricing a seven out of ten. The additional cost depends on the extra feature requirements."
"We have the full license that included all of the features and support."
"The product’s price is reasonable."
"It can always improve pricewise regarding throughput."
"The larger MX products are on the expensive side."
"I think the price is comparable with other solutions of the same kind. Depending on the use case it could be cheaper or more expensive, I think it offers good value."
"The product is a little expensive."
"Other content filtering solutions that I have used had more bells and whistles, but given the cost, complexity, and management overhead, I am very pleased with Meraki’s solution."
"I rate the tool's price a four on a scale of one to ten, where one is cheap, and ten is very expensive."
"The tool's prices are okay compared to the traditional solutions. We find Meraki MX platform to be cheaper compared to the regular tools, like SD-Access."
"The price of this solution and the price of support are ok."
"The pricing could be better."
"We bought a three-year license, and we renew it whenever it expires. The price could be better. It's always very expensive."
"I think the price is good."
"We chose Stormshield for its price, as the Azure firewall was too expensive."
"For mid-sized companies, they sell their appliances for good prices."
"The SN200 series costs between $500 USD and $600 USD per year, whereas the SN700 series costs approximately $1,000 annually."
