Automation reduces intervention and speeds up threat prevention
Our primary use case for Cisco Defense Orchestrator is the automation of playbooks. We primarily use it for this purpose to streamline processes The most valuable feature is the automation, as it reduces user intervention and allows us to focus on other tasks. Since the system is automated,…

Cloud logs have supported long-term auditing but security vulnerabilities still raise concerns
It depends on the user. When he needs maybe data retention for one year, for three months or more, I recommend Fortinet FortiGate Cloud. If he doesn't want to set the log on FortiAnalyzer, I will recommend him with Fortinet FortiGate Cloud. It depends. As I mentioned before, if they don't have a syslog server or any other SIEM, I will recommend it. If they need an audit for one year of data retention, I will recommend it because it's worth the money for one year of log retention. It's straightforward. If I enable Fortinet FortiGate Cloud feature on the FortiGate on-premise or VM, it will copy the configuration on the cloud. Depending on my license, I can configure it or have it as read-only with a limited license. That's one of the main purposes of Fortinet FortiGate Cloud for me. The report doesn't have many templates, but the log retention is so good with one-year retention. If you compare it with the FortiAnalyzer or maybe with any other product such as a FortiSIEM template, with the limited license, you only get the 360 template, it's called. I think the security function, I mainly use it for configuration purposes and log retention purposes. The security is the same as the VM or the hardware, I think. The sandbox. I think it has it, but not a lot if you only have the default capability with only 10 files per minute. I think the user needs to be selective with the files that they want to send to the sandbox on the cloud.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The initial setup was straightforward; we spun up the VM onsite, generated the key that it needed to talk to the Cloud Orchestrator, and after that, as I started adding devices, it was relatively quick and easy."
"The most valuable feature is being able to do centralized upgrades on the ASAs. We can select all of those ASAs, and say, "Upgrade these ASAs at this scheduled time." It will copy down the ASA image, ASDM image, and then do the upgrade and failovers, and then put it all back into service as required at a scheduled time. It automates that process for us."
"We are using this solution for filtering and blocking some websites, as a firewall, and as the main tool for network segmentation and intrusion prevention, blocking malware and malicious activity."
"With Cisco Defense Orchestrator, we can manage the complete Cisco Security solution, and it provides a simple and centralized way to manage all products."
"Cisco Defense Orchestrator is a very great solution to centralizing device management and security."
"Cisco Defense Orchestrator has useful guides for the steps that need to follow by users."
"When we're looking to the policies, it identifies the shadow rules. It notifies us about anything that will supersede other rules."
"The most valuable feature is the automation, as it reduces user intervention and allows us to focus on other tasks."
"The cost is reasonable if you compare it to maybe a SIEM or FortiAnalyzer, and if the user just wants to query the log from maybe three months ago or six months ago, I think it's worth the money."
"The hardware is reliable, and their support is excellent."
"If you have multiple sites, multiple regions, or if you have a spread of Fortinet equipment around the globe and you want to manage them all in one place, then FortiCloud is the best choice."
"The most valuable features are management and integration."
"The solution works well for remote or branch offices with unlimited links, and that's where we've found the most benefit."
"The most valuable features of the solution are the UTP feature, IPS antivirus, and web filtering."
"It's user-friendly."
"The intel we get from Fortinet is its most valuable aspect."

Cons

"There could be some slight improvements to navigation."
"There could be some slight improvements to navigation. In some of the navigation you've got to go back to be able to get into where you need to be once you've made a change. If I make a change, I've then got to go back to submit and send the change."
"If I had to say anything negative it's the price point."
"When logging into the device, we sort of had problems with it staying in sync. If somebody made a change onsite, it wouldn't do an automatic sync. It would have to wait, as you would have to do a manual sync up."
"CDO doesn't have a report, an official report that I can check daily. It has another module called FTD, but it doesn't have that specifically for ASA. In the reporting, there are a lot of things that aren't there. There is also room for improvement in the daily monitoring."
"Right now, there's no benefit to doing changes through CDO; it doesn't save me time."
"I wanted CDO to be a central place so where I could do everything but right now I don't think that's possible."
"They need to work on the user interface. It needs to be improved to make it more user-friendly."
"For improvement, I'd like to see basic endpoint security management integrated into the firewall with just a license addition."
"They could improve the product features for telemetry and interoperability with third-party monitoring tools."
"The console or demonstration tool could be more user friendly."
"Fortinet needs to improve the FortiGate Cloud dashboards that provide information about logs. This type of solution presents a lot of technical complexity from a management standpoint, making it somewhat difficult to understand."
"When we fully utilize certain functions, the CPU and memory utilization can reach 100% or more, causing the system to become unresponsive during production hours."
"It would be much better if Fortinet FortiGate Cloud allowed third-party integrations like multi factor-authentication."
"The Linux version currently lacks some of the latest features, notably in the IPv6 tool stack, which is available for Windows clients."
"We have found that the antivirus functions are very bad in Fortinet FortiGate Cloud and we don't use the antivirus anymore."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"After our free trial was done we got a subscription for three years and it was under $3,000 or so. It's part of the EA we already paid for, so I don't know what it would be if it was a la carte."
"It's around £500 per unit for a three-year license."
"I work with a lot of clients, and the price or value of the Cisco Defense Orchestrator can vary from one client to another. If you have a lot of Cisco solutions, the price of the Cisco Defense Orchestrator is justified. Whereas if you have some security components from other vendors, such as Check Point or Palo Alto. This solution would be a pretty expensive proposition considering that they don't integrate with them well."
"If you compare to what is available on the market, they are in the same range with respect to pricing."
"It is covered under the CIsco Enterprise License Agreement (ELA). So, it is licensed and ours."
"It is about a $100 per year for an ASA 5506 firewall, and from there it keeps going up if you have a bigger box. For example, the 5516 is $200 to $300 per year."
"As with us, our customers need not pay for a license. One brings one's own."
"Fortinet FortiGate Cloud is a cost-effective solution. I rate its pricing a six out of ten. Pricing depends on the firewall model. If the firewall model's pricing is high, the solution's pricing also increases."
"The solution is relatively cost-effective compared to alternatives."
"I rate the product pricing as seven out of ten."
"The price of the product is approximately 10,000 Qatar Riyal ($2,750 USD), and another 10,000 Qatar Riyal for a three-year license."
"The costs are reasonable."
"The price is over $1,000 USD annually."
"We pay around $19,000 a year and do not pay for extra technical support."
