Review summaries and opinions

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

ROI

Sentiment score
5.6
Users experience varied ROI from Cloudera Data Platform, with outcomes depending on deployment specifics and infrastructure usage.
Sentiment score
7.1
Organizations benefit from improved data quality, time savings, and ROI with Informatica Cloud, enhancing processes and security.

Customer Service

Sentiment score
6.7
Cloudera support is generally helpful but varies, with paid services rated better; interaction with engineers is highly valued.
Sentiment score
6.9
Informatica's customer service is effective, praised for responsiveness but criticized for occasional delays and inconsistency.
I have communicated with technical support, and they are responsive and helpful.
The response time is pretty good because we have someone in-house, who is an expert from Informatica, in our team who can help us with any sort of queries usually.
Due to the tool's maturity limitations, solutions are not always simple and often require workarounds.
If they are unsure how to resolve an issue, they keep customers informed, providing updates about progress and ensuring communication with the product team to deliver accurate responses.

Scalability Issues

Sentiment score
6.6
Cloudera Data Platform is highly scalable and efficient, outperforming Hortonworks despite minor upgrade challenges that are manageable with support.
Sentiment score
7.3
Informatica IDMC is highly scalable and adaptable, though optimal design and documentation are crucial for large-scale operations.
Integration with other tools works well for us and we successfully scaled the solution after two to three years without any issues.
For scalability, I rate Cloudera Data Platform at an eight out of ten as it is an on-premise solution.
As a SaaS platform, IDMC is quite scalable and provides complete flexibility.

Stability Issues

Sentiment score
7.1
Cloudera Data Platform is stable with minimal issues, mostly related to hardware or updates, and is highly rated for reliability.
Sentiment score
7.7
Informatica Intelligent Data Management Cloud is generally stable, with newer versions being more reliable and support enhancing consistency.
Stability is crucial because IDMC holds business-critical data, and it needs to be available all the time for business users.

Room For Improvement

Cloudera Data Platform needs improvements in usability, security, cloud integration, cost, and support for broader industry application.
IDMC requires UI improvements, better system connectivity, performance enhancements, cost reduction, AI features, and improved support and observability.
Cloudera Data Platform should include additional capabilities and features similar to those offered by other data management solutions like Azure and Databricks.
We aim to address these issues with a Kubernetes-based platform that will simplify the task of upgrading services.
I also want to see integration with other Informatica products, such as IICS, to leverage the metadata from EDC.
The tool needs to mature in terms of category-specific attributes or dynamic attributes.
The observability concept in Informatica Intelligent Data Management Cloud (IDMC) needs improvement as the capabilities are not up to the mark compared to the industry.

Setup Cost

Cloudera Data Platform's pricing is complex yet affordable, valued for open-source aspects and professional service needs for optimization.
Informatica IDMC's pricing is seen as high, with nuanced licensing, leading to user concerns compared to competitors.
Initially, CDH had a straightforward pricing model based on nodes, but CDP includes factors like processors, cores, terabytes, and drives, making it difficult to calculate costs.
It ranges from a quarter million to a couple of million a year.
The licenses are too expensive compared to before, which is why customers are now preferring other data metadata management tools like OneTrust, Collibra, and Azure Purview.
I think the costs are reasonable for the kinds of features that Informatica Intelligent Data Management Cloud (IDMC) has.

Valuable Features

Cloudera Data Platform excels in flexibility, scalability, and comprehensive features for efficient data management, secure containerization, and AI support.
Informatica IDMC is a robust cloud platform offering seamless data integration, real-time streaming, and comprehensive data management features.
By using the Hadoop File System for distributed storage, we have 1.5 petabytes of physical storage with 500 terabytes of effective storage due to a replication factor of three.
The foremost benefit is offloading data from the warehouse to Cloudera Data Platform, which allows for cheaper storage.
In on-premise, we call it EDC for metadata management, while in cloud-based technologies, it is known as the Metadata Command Center, which serves the same purpose as EDC concerning CDGC.
The platform's ability to pull in data from other platforms without the need for an additional integration tool enhances its appeal.
Informatica Intelligent Data Management Cloud (IDMC) can connect to pretty much any application, including Oracle Analytics and Power BI, and it works quite seamlessly.

Distributed computing improves data processing while upgrade complexity needs addressing
There are challenges with upgrading or updating various services like Spark, Impala, and Hive on on-premise and bare metal solutions. We aim to address these issues with a Kubernetes-based platform that will simplify the task of upgrading services. We also wish to implement lakehouse capabilities with Iceberg or Delta Lake frameworks.

Match and merge functionality is still the best but cloud version needs more functionality
There are various areas for improvement in IDMC. Enhancements on basic data management functionality and the UI front, such as multiple templates and improved grid views, would be beneficial. Bulk data management features could be improved from the UI perspective to get to the level of the on prem versions of Informatica MDM. The tool needs to mature but missing small but important features, like restricted dynamic attributes functionality, data inheritance rules in master hierachies, identifiers not being passed in jobs is a drawback.
