Enhancing data management with user-friendly features but needs better documentation
We are a customer of Collibra. Collibra Governance is applied in our data management workflows by creating all the business functions separately, maintaining the data sources of those KPIs and everything separately on those businesses Collibra Governance provides ease of use. The portal is…

Provides a single interface to monitor and navigate data quality metrics
One area with room for improvement would be the ability to generate detailed quality reports. Some Python libraries provide quality scores and reports—having that capability within IBM Data Governance would be beneficial. We can see the pass/fail results, but getting additional percentage ratios would add significant value. My experience with IBM Data Governance has mostly been with the GUI. I've noticed some latency when accessing the portal. Also, automating reports can sometimes hang, though that might depend on the overall system. That's where I see the most room for improvement – quicker report generation. Fetching specific data from the IBM Data Governance repository tends to be slower compared to other vendors. For example, Collibra has a more responsive GUI. Retrieving large datasets from the IBM catalog is particularly slow.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Collibra is very good at talking to modern database systems like a normal RDBMS, a DB2, or a SQL server or an Oracle."
"It helps us build a powerful workflow mechanism where there can be any stewardship, including issue management governing assets using policies, regulations, or business rules."
"The end-to-end solution itself is great. The most valuable is the workload feature that Collibra offers. There is a vast amount of flexibility in terms of how much we can customize. It gives us a lot of options to implement for a lot of purposes."
"We have folks in the field doing our clinical research operations, and they have the opportunity to refer to Collibra when they are examining a particular report. When they have a question about how something in that report is derived, they can pull a metric that is defined fully in Collibra. They have the opportunity to drill back into Collibra to see that."
"It is user-friendly."
"The customization and the dashboards are pretty good."
"The data quality module has improved significantly, and the data lineage feature is beneficial for understanding where data is coming from and identifying data duplications."
"I like Collibra's flexibility. I like to be able to modify things for our own use. For example, we've chosen to use Collibra also as a knowledge management tool, even though it is not designed to be a knowledge management tool. That's the beauty of it. It can serve as a knowledge management tool by creating some custom assets specifically for knowledge management."
"IBM Data Governance improved data analytics operations. During a company merger, we used IBM Data Governance to understand and bridge sample data between systems."

Cons

"If someone changes the metadata, we can't see who changed it."
"When you have a huge amount of hierarchical data to manage, the solution's performance tends to decrease."
"There's a lot of things available in their Data Intelligence Cloud that are not available on-premise."
"There should be more detailed documentation on the selectors and certain information, and a reduction in cost as compared to other tools."
"The platform can sometimes be unstable, particularly in terms of speed and reconnection issues."
"There should be more detailed documentation on the selectors and certain information, and a reduction in cost as compared to other tools."
"I would like to see a feature using the runtime dashboard."
"The interface is not very user-friendly and can be difficult to navigate."
"One area with room for improvement would be the ability to generate detailed quality reports. Some Python libraries provide quality scores and reports—having that capability within IBM Data Governance would be beneficial."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Collibra Governance is an expensive solution."
"There are different levels of licenses. For example, some users can only do read-only licenses, and others have the stewardship license where they can give access to users."
"Collibra Governance is extremely expensive"
"It is substantial, and we do pay yearly."
"Many of our customers I spoke to felt that the solution is a bit highly-priced."
"The solution's pricing is moderate and not very expensive."
"Collibra is a bit expensive."
"We purchase its annual license. There is an extra cost for additional users."

Besides features, don't forget to look at user experience and software performance. One of your choices is significantly lacking in both areas. You might consider adding erwin Data Intelligence Suite to your list. Something you might find interesting: Alation vs Collibra vs Quest (erwin) 2022 | Gartner Peer Insights  You can change the products you are comparing, seeing how others have rated the tools you are looking at.
