Hybrid backup strategy has improved recovery orchestration and now supports flexible DR planning
I think improvements could be made in Commvault Cloud. Lately what I have seen is that there are AI capabilities that different data protection organizations are coming up with, which basically revolves around tiering of not frequently accessible data to glacier kind of storage, plus bringing in a high level of compression and deduplication capabilities. All those features I believe are there in other customers and they are bringing in new use cases from the AI perspective which I have not recently seen in Commvault. I have seen that Dell does have such features. We recently pitched a solution to the customers where we talked about data tiering and the other AI use cases, identifying the data by itself and autonomously taking decisions on how to tier the data between the different storage classes that we have. Those kind of capabilities that we have proposed to the customer as far as the partner solutions are concerned. I would like to see AI capabilities in Commvault Cloud. The rest of the features pretty much align with the other enterprise solutions that we have in the market. It is just the AI capability that is being asked by the customers as well as that I see missing with Commvault.

Lockdown devices and ports on endpoints so that you can stop propagation of any virus if it's detected but performance utilization can be better
It's scalable in the form of it now covers mobile devices as well as a number of other different types of devices, not just Windows. Also, there's no limit as to how many devices you can install it on. We plan to expand the number of devices/users as we get more people onboard or upgrade to more mobile devices; we will then increase the number of licenses for mobile devices. We've got 450 licenses, but we've got about 375 devices and users currently. I would rate the scalability a ten out of ten. There's not a product yet that I've found that I can't put it on, especially now that they've got the new release, which was the mobile agents.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Whoever has an Endpoint license can store unlimited data on the cloud."
"Commvault can actually come in and assist you with aspects of the implementation - and they are quite helpful."
"IntelliSnap for snapshot collection is one of the most efficient and easiest ways to back up large amounts of data."
"The product's stability is good enough."
"I'm a big fan of the reporting. You can build your own reports; it's very customizable. You can have individual reports going to groups of people or individuals. You can have them go out multiple times a day. It's basically a free-for-all as far as reporting goes. If anybody wants a specific job report every day, you can build it, schedule it, and have it go out and never touched it again. It's pretty nice."
"The most valuable feature is Commvault's coverage. It has wide coverage to back up every data center environment. The product can back up OpenStack, OpenShift, and competitive solutions don't have this feature. Commvault can handle backing up any virtual workload or enterprise application."
"The VM backups and the recovery from cloud infrastructure are valuable."
"We recommend this product for people who are running the Oracle Virtualization Manager."
"The automated response capability in SentinelOne enhances security operations. It means I don't have to worry about having too many security people watching it because you can automate a lot of the tasks."

Cons

"Our customers complain that this is a difficult product to manage."
"The initial setup was complicated."
"Persistent binding is a feature that I would like to see in the next release of Commvault."
"Additional SaaS application support would be good... we have SaaS applications that may not be big enough for Commvault to support yet. Box.com is one we've asked about for years, and it's just not on the radar, as far as I know."
"Mostly controls, visibility, cost allocation."
"The product's migration process and stability need improvement."
"There is room for improvement in the Knowledge Base and error reporting. I would like to see best practices in the Knowledge Base, and have the ability to diagnose errors without contacting support."
"Bare-metal restore needs some work. It's not intuitive and seems to have been an afterthought."
"The performance utilization on the device that it's monitoring. This aspect needs improvement."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"There is now a subscription based licence option that, depending on your environment, could offer a more efficient method to licence the solution if you are OPEX cost driven rather than CAPEX."
"Licensing could be better explained. Sometimes, it's unclear what features are available in different licensing models."
"The pricing has improved. It is simplified compared to the way that it was a few years ago. It is fairly straightforward and pretty easy to articulate to customers, which is handy."
"Commvault Backup & Recovery is priced fairly, and its performance-to-cost ratio is also better than fair."
"The pricing is fairly in line with the other products we've compared it with recently. We do spend more on it than we did in our Backup Exec days, but it's fairly competitive with some of the other best-in-class data protection platforms."
"Originally, it was really attractive when we were deployed on-prem. They have since built and moved it to the cloud, which I am a big fan of. I have all my security tools in the cloud, but it came with a significant increase in pricing. We ended up negotiating a better price because we have been a long-term customer, and I have also spoken on their behalf quite a few times, but if I have to buy it at its current rate, I am not sure if I would be a customer. It is expensive."
"I rate the product’s pricing a five out of ten."
"It is cheaper than Veeam."
"I would rate the pricing a three out of ten; one is very expensive, and ten is an absolutely cheap product."
