Hybrid backup strategy has improved recovery orchestration and now supports flexible DR planning
I think improvements could be made in Commvault Cloud. Lately what I have seen is that there are AI capabilities that different data protection organizations are coming up with, which basically revolves around tiering of not frequently accessible data to glacier kind of storage, plus bringing in a high level of compression and deduplication capabilities. All those features I believe are there in other customers and they are bringing in new use cases from the AI perspective which I have not recently seen in Commvault. I have seen that Dell does have such features. We recently pitched a solution to the customers where we talked about data tiering and the other AI use cases, identifying the data by itself and autonomously taking decisions on how to tier the data between the different storage classes that we have. Those kind of capabilities that we have proposed to the customer as far as the partner solutions are concerned. I would like to see AI capabilities in Commvault Cloud. The rest of the features pretty much align with the other enterprise solutions that we have in the market. It is just the AI capability that is being asked by the customers as well as that I see missing with Commvault.

Reliable backups have protected Kubernetes workloads and now simplify disaster recovery
Veeam Kasten for Kubernetes does not require any additional setup. It runs as a pod inside a cluster, allowing you to take a backup of your Kubernetes cluster from within it. It has snapshot-level capability, so you can take a backup of your complete cluster and store it in your cloud environment such as S3 buckets. Integration of Veeam Kasten for Kubernetes is easier because it can be deployed on any type of CNCF-certified Kubernetes distribution. I usually integrate Veeam Kasten for Kubernetes with my Kubernetes cluster, which can be on any platform such as Nutanix, OpenShift, or bare metal. It increases the backup process with its automation feature. I only need to schedule the time and which namespace or workload type should be backed up at a particular time of the month, day, or week, and it automates the process effectively. It also transfers, imports, and exports the data wherever I need. Veeam Kasten for Kubernetes has excellent security measures with different types of roles. I cannot take a backup of anything without the appropriate role, and I also need a token for accessing the Veeam Kasten for Kubernetes dashboard. It has robust security features. Veeam Kasten for Kubernetes offers a lot of policy features. Inside my cluster and dashboard, I can create policies and use them according to my compliance requirements.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We can use it on-premises and in the cloud."
"The granularity of the Office 365 Backup & Recovery feature is very good. We've used all of it, recovering data from each of the four systems that we back up with it, and it works very well."
"HyperScale X is really user-friendly and has a lot of features. It's also cheaper, faster, and more stable than its competitors."
"The multi-tenancy is the most valuable feature for us because it's the only software that is fully multi-tenant and that has all the features we need to provide to all our tenants. It provides us with advanced features for MySQL and Oracle, among other platforms"
"We recommend this product for people who are running the Oracle Virtualization Manager."
"After deploying the Commvault solution, we are saving four to five hours a week."
"There are many valuable features of Commvault HyperScale X giving many possibilities to complete jobs, particularly with the backup and restore."
"One of the most valuable features is the encryption which helps save you from ransomware. Because the data is already encrypted, it cannot be encrypted again."
"Veeam Kasten for Kubernetes is a very good backup solution; during times of DC/DR, whenever clusters or systems go down, I can use previously taken backups, and my DevOps team can integrate and migrate them, rebuilding my stopped cluster in less time, which reduces my downtime significantly."
"The effectiveness of Veeam Kasten for Kubernetes in minimizing operational complexities is saving our lives."

Cons

"Its dashboard could be improved to provide a summarized version of all the jobs instead of having to go through each one of them. We should easily be able to glance at all issues. If I had not gone with the on-premise version, I would have had regular reports with the cloud version. It would be an advantage if they increase the compression rate of the backup. I am keeping it on-prem, so I'll need more disks depending on the policies that I have in the retention period. Its price could also be lower. If a good solution can be cheaper, it is always an advantage."
"Licensing could be better explained."
"One issue we face is the complexity of the console. That could be improved on. It takes users time to get familiar with Commvault. On average, it takes our customers between one and three months to learn it. The console and the way you configure Commvault have very advanced settings. It takes time to understand how it works."
"They should move the CommServe outside of Windows machines and the database should be distributed among servers."
"I would like them not to push Command Center. It is good, but I would like them to enable all the features for the Java console. Some things are not in the Java console, like Office 365 agents. In fact, they are there, but one of the engineers had to show me how to configure it. It's not done the same as in the Command Center."
"The initial setup was complex."
"I don't know much about the pricing and licensing, but I do know it is very expensive."
"The solution requires constant attention. Commvault is very complex."
"Veeam Kasten for Kubernetes can improve its multi-cluster setup dashboard because the multi-cluster and single-cluster dashboards are the same."
"The stability part could be improved a little bit."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We work with Commvault and a partner on our environment needs according to capacity, licensing, pricing, components, modules, etc. Additional costs depend on your backup needs."
"The price is not cheap, but when you compare it to the other products they are all almost the same level in terms of price."
"Commvault is more expensive than Veeam, which is the reason that we are changing to Veeam for cloud environments."
"In India, this is a very expensive product."
"The solution is highly-priced."
"Everyone else offers the subscription-based model nowadays, while Commvault Complete Data Protection still has the traditional license model, where you must buy a set of licenses. You pay for one hundred licenses even if you only use fifty virtual machines, so the licensing model needs improvement."
"It is a little too high. I would like to get more of a consumption model or more of a periodic true-up type of model that is more friendly to the ups and downs that you may have in your data instead of locking into multi-year agreements."
"The price is a little bit high."
