Datadog needs to introduce more hard limits to cost. If we see a huge log spike, administrators should have more control over what happens to save costs. If a service starts logging extensively, I want the ability to automatically direct that log into the cheapest log bucket. This should be the case with many offerings. If we're seeing too much APM, we need to be aware of it and able to stop it rather than having administrators reach out to specific teams. Datadog has become significantly slower over the last year. They could improve performance at the risk of slowing down feature work. More resources need to go into Fleet Automation because we face many problems with things such as the Ansible role to install Datadog in non-containerized hosts. We mainly want to see performance improvements, less time spent looking at costs, the ability to trust that costs will stay reasonable, and an easier way to manage our agents. It is such a powerful tool with much potential on the horizon, but cost control, performance, and agent management need improvement. The main issues are with the administrative side rather than the actual application.

It is a stable solution, but they should make the user interface easier to understand
The solution's initial setup takes work. We have to organize multiple paths and many features. The deployment process takes less than a week. But it takes a month to complete if we want to make the solution smarter by integrating it with various devices. I rate the process as a six out of ten.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We chose Datadog over the other products that we evaluated because it had better features: notifications, alerting, and metric capture, and Datadog had the skill sets that we wanted at the time."
"Datadog has alerting events and metrics all in one place; this was a huge plus, other solutions were trying to treat monitoring as a multi-faceted problem, while Datadog treated it as one problem."
"We find they have a very helpful alert system."
"I find the greatest feature is being able to search across logs from various microservices."
"The seamless integration between Datadog and hundreds of apps makes onboarding new products and teams a breeze."
"The ease of use allowed me to get up to speed with log management since it's my first time using Datadog."
"I have found the logging and tracing features the most valuable."
"I really enjoy the RUM monitoring features of Datadog. It allows us to monitor user behavior in a way we couldn't before."
"The newer 11.5 version that my team is using has found it to have good mapping."
"The product's initial setup phase was not at all difficult."
"The most valuable feature is the correlation, as it can report in real-time and monitor the management."
"Stability has not been an issue with this product."
"The most valuable feature is the hunting ability to work in a CERT."
"The most valuable feature is that we can create our own connectors for any application, and NetWitness provides the training and tools to do it."
"Packet Solution: Allows analyst proactive hunting and alerting on daily sophisticated APTs."
"The most valuable features are the threat prediction and network forensics."

Cons

"We have asked technical support questions, and sometimes they don't get back to us right away. Or when they do, it is not the right answer."
"We have asked technical support questions, and sometimes they don't get back to us right away. Or when they do, it is not the right answer."
"We have contact with many customers that cover many areas, so we have cases where the infrastructure administration could be improved."
"Another issue that I have is with the search syntax, it could be simpler and it feels like there are too many ways to do the same things."
"I rate Datadog an eight out of ten because the expense of using it keeps it from being a nine or ten."
"It seems that admin cost control granularity is an afterthought."
"We primarily use the log management functionality, and the only feedback I have there is better fuzzy text searching in logs (the kind that Kibana has)."
"Other than being restricted by cost, Datadog's scalability has been a little bit of a challenge to do the initial installation of the agent."
"The solution should have more integration capabilities with different platforms."
"More customizability is required, which is something that they need to improve on."
"The system architecture is complex and sometimes it’s hard to troubleshoot potential problems."
"The documentation is not as structured as I would like, personally, and I think that it can be improved and made much more user-friendly."
"It is overly complicated. It has taken years to implement and the return on investment just isn't there."
"I'd like to see improvement in its ease of use. It's basically unusable. It's overly complex."
"The initial setup was complex because it took a lot of time to complete the implementation."
"Log aggregation is an issue with this solution because there are a huge number of alerts in a single instance."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The cost is high and this can be justified if the scale of the environment is big."
"The price is better than some competing products."
"The solution is fairly priced but history and log storage can get costly depending on your needs."
"Sometimes it's very hard to project how much it will cost for the monthly subscription for the next month when you add certain features. Having better visibility of the cost would give a better experience."
"It didn't scale well from the cost perspective. We had a custom package deal."
"It costs the same amount it would if we were hosting it ourselves, so we are incredibly happy with the cost."
"Datadog does not provide any free plans to use the solution. When I start with a proof of concept it would be sensible to have a free plan to test the tool and check whether it fits the requirements of the project. Before the production stage, it is always good to have a free plan with some limited features, number of requests, or logs."
"The price of Datadog is reasonable. Other solutions are more expensive, such as AppDynamics."
"Compared to the competition, the is price is not that high."
"The NetWitness Platform may be affordable only for enterprise-level customers, as it may not be within the budget of small and medium-sized businesses."
"We have yearly licensing costs. The license fee can be based on the volume of EPS. Some organizations may have, as a gentlemanly gesture, 10,000 EPS and get a 3,000 EPS license but actually use 5,000 EPS."
"The product is expensive."
"RSA NetWitness Logs and Packets do not have a subscription model, it's a one-time purchase. There is only a perpetual license."
"It’s cheaper to run virtual machines in a VMware environment."
"In comparison to other SIEM solutions such as Splunk, NetWitness is less costly."
"Our license is for one year."
